The Planning Types

In the following, some planning types are explained by means of simple circuits.

General circuit diagram

The General Circuit Diagram is a simplified illustration without auxiliary line, usuall a
single-line diagram. It considers only the essential parts of the circuit.

The Flow Diagram in detailed view (operating diagram)

The operating diagram is a complete illustration of a circuit. The operating diagram

contains all main and auxiliary lines. Special emphasis is put on the possibility to
recognize the interrelation of the devices. The spatial arrangement of the devices is
not important.
The operation diagram is limited to smaller circuits.

The Flow Diagram in exploded view (flow diagram)

The flow diagram is a functional illustration of a circuit. The branched lines are
subdivided to an ordered form, the so-called current paths. Spatial arrangement and
mechanical interrelations of individual parts need not be taken into account.

The contact table

PC NC NO
The contact table in a flow diagram gives information, how 3 - 5
many main contact elements and auxiliary contacts a
contactor has and where they are located (current path). A 3 - -
dash in a table means that an element is existing but not 3
used in the present circuit.

The Contact Overview

A contact table does not state which contact is occupied. Therefore, a contact
overview is used. The contact overview states, which contacts are occupied and in
with current paths they are marked. Furthermore, it is obvious which contacts are still
free/unoccupied.
CAD-Programmes usually need the manufacturer’s data of the used contactors.

The Equipment List

There is an equipment list for every circuit diagram. It is a detailed list of all devices
of the plant or system in alphabetic order of the equipment indicator letters.

e.g.:
F1 protection load circuit type DO1 10A
F2 protection control circuit type DO1 4A
M1 Motor 1kW, data…
Q1 motor protection switch Eaton PKZM 0 0,4-0,63A / 0,5A; item No. 278478
Q2 Motor contactor type Eaton DILM7-10(230V50/60HZ) ; item No. 276558
S0 Push button NC (Eaton) Type …, colour
S1 Push button NO (Eaton) Type …, colour

The Functional Description

The functional description of a circuit or a process is done in text form, for complex
combinations it may also be done as a diagram (sequence chart).

e.g.:
Motor M1 is switched on with push button Se and can be stopped with push button
S0. The motor is protected against overload with motor protection switch Q1.
If Q1 trips, troubleshooting must be performed. After removal of the malfunction, the
motor protection switch can be switched on again and the motor can be re-started
with S1.
