Contrary to popular belief, "The Count of Monte Cristo" was not directly copied from
Jose Rizal's "El Filibusterismo" by Alexandre Dumas. While it's true that Rizal took
inspiration from a variety of literary genres, including European literature, his writing is
nonetheless a singular and distinctly Filipino narrative.

In "El Filibusterismo," which was released in 1891 and is a continuation of Rizal's

previous book, "Noli Me Tangere," his work explores the more complex socio-political
challenges that existed in the Philippines during the Spanish colonial period. Rizal was
not simply influenced by works from elsewhere; his views of Philippine society also had
an impact on his writing style and subjects.

Rizal's novel "El Filibusterismo" is a reflection of the Philippine struggle for

independence and the injustices experienced by Filipinos under Spanish rule. While
both works explore themes of retribution, justice, and societal corruption, the contexts,
characters, and plotlines of "El Filibusterismo" are fundamentally different from those
in "The Count of Monte Cristo."

Indeed, the concept of revenge is explored in both novels. Edmond Dantès pursues
vengeance in "The Count of Monte Cristo," while Simoun, a character from Rizal's
previous novel "Noli Me Tangere," plots vengeance against corrupt authorities and
Spanish friars in "El Filibusterismo." Both works consist of complex characters. Both
authors develop characters with depth. Simoun and Edmond Dantès are complicated
people who are motivated by revenge and a personal tragedy. Their multi-layered
characters demonstrate the complexity of human emotions and intentions. Both

Meanwhile, cultural context as noted in their differences– "El Filibusterismo" has

begun in the Filipino resistance movement against Spanish colonization. Themes
of social inequality, colonial mistreatment, and the struggle for reform are all
addressed in Rizal's writings, which display the terrible reality that Filipinos under
repressive Spanish rule had to confront. On the other side, "The Count of Monte
Cristo" is set in early 19th-century France and centers on personal grudges within
an aristocratic European setting.

Moreover, the two novel's resolutions diverge greatly. The consequences for the
protagonists and those around them reflect the many cultural and historical
circumstances of their stories, it should be noted without giving anything away in
terms of the plot.

While literary works might influence one another, Rizal's "El Filibusterismo" is a
result of his personal take on the colonial history of the Philippines and cannot be
viewed as a mere copy of any foreign novel or film.

In essence, both novels are literary triumphs because they are literary
masterpieces that showcase the creativity and brilliance of their authors.
Because of its originality and the subtlety with which it addresses its themes, both
novels are timeless and significant in the literary world.

My experience may be typical, but I personally despise gossip, people who don't
keep promises, and leak people's secrets.

I had a good friend called Joycel in junior high school, and I trusted her
completely. Together, we shared many memories as well as secrets and dreams.
One day, I asked her to keep a personal struggle between us as I confided in her
about it. A few days later, I found out she had told our entire group of friends
about my secret. I had an intense jumble of feelings, including shock, hurt, and
profound betrayal. She confessed to sharing the information after being
questioned, believing it to be an insignificant chitchat.

I made the decision to talk openly with Joycel about how her actions had
wounded me thereafter. She really apologized, but our relationship was now
lacking trust. I withdrew myself from her and gave myself time to recover, finding
comfort in other connections and enjoyable pastimes.

Over time, I came to understand the importance of trust and the worth of true
friendships. Although it was unpleasant, this event taught me the value of having
boundaries and knowing who to confide in. It was difficult but it made a turning
point for me towards development, reminding me of the strength of the human
spirit even in the face of betrayal.

2. What if you also experienced the betrayal of your friend? What will you do?

Communication may not always bring to closure, but it may be helpful in

understanding what lies behind the betrayal. Prioritizing self-care helps a lot
in overcoming betrayal. To get support and perspective, this may entail
talking to a close friend or counselor. Activities that make you happy, such
as hobbies or time spent with friends and loved ones, might promote
healing.

It takes a lot of effort to forgive, especially when there has been a serious
betrayal. It's important to understand that showing forgiveness doesn't mean
you approve of the betrayal; rather, it means you let go of the painful
feelings caused by it for your own state of mind. Sometimes, forgiving
someone takes place gradually over time.

There is really no one solution that works for everyone when it comes to
dealing with betrayal. Giving yourself the necessary time and space to
recover is the key. You can also seek a helping hand from people who
appreciate and understand your emotions.
