Case Study: Mary Case Study: Mary

• Mary has a history of non-suicidal self-injury, BPD criteria:
specifically cutting her arms & legs. She says
that she doesn’t really know who she is, & she
changes who she is based on who is around
her. She has an intense relation with her
partner, at times, saying he is ‘the best thing
that’s ever happened to me’ & at other times
thinking ‘I can’t stand him’. She will ignore or
lash out at him, but then panics at the thought
of him leaving her. She impulsively engages in
sexual activity & drinking alcohol 7 8

Case Study: Jay Case Study: Jim

• Jay is a successful university graduate & BPD criteria:
appears outwardly relaxed. However he feels Similarities & differences
that his inner world is chaos & he does not b/w Mary & Jay?
know how to be himself. Nobody sees his
turmoil & minor events deeply upset him.
From time to time he suddenly loses his
temper over trivial matters. He reports feelings
of nothingness & deadness. He secretly spends
recklessly & impulsively gambles. He has
episodes of anxiety that can last for up to
several hours
