Alphabet Materials

 Read the Russian words on the following 4 pages. The words are arranged in a particular order, so that each word introduces one letter
that you have not seen in any of the previous words.
 The new letters are not introduced in alphabetical order: turn to page 5 to see the letters in alphabetical order.
 The new letter in each word is given in the left-hand column. Remember, however, that the new letter is not necessarily the first letter of
the word in which it appears. For example, the letter ‘м’ appears for the first time in the word ‘дама’, but is not the first letter of ‘дама’.
 You may want to write a phonetic equivalent for each letter on page 5 as you go through, creating your own ‘key’ for use out of class.
 Try to avoid writing down phonetic ‘translations’ next to the words themselves. If you come across a letter you don’t recognise, but it is
not the new letter for that word, then you will definitely have seen it before: look back until you find the word in which it first appeared.
 There is a CD to help you learn the alphabet (RLC Audio Materials Coursebook 1, CD1). The text for what you will hear on the CD is
given on pages 19-20 of these materials.

 This page gives the Russian letters in alphabetical order. The letters are given in upper and lower case, in three different fonts: a ‘times’ style font; an ‘arial’ style font; and a font that approximates to hand-written script. (See pages
17–18 for other examples of hand-written Russian).

 Practise pronouncing the numbers 1–20 below. Pay particular attention to where the words are stressed.
 A couple of pointers on pronunciation: don’t worry too much about the soft signs at the end of many of the numbers, and don’t be put off
by the дц combination in the teens: you should pronounce the ц only, so all the teens end in ‘natsat’.
