SEMESTER 7
PRE-CONSTRUCTION PHASE
Numerous measures can be used to ensure environmentally-conscious building
practices throughout the pre-construction stage in Raipur, Chhattisgarh. Some of them
are:

1. Site Selection and Analysis:

• Choosing a site within close proximity to public transportation, existing
infrastructure, and access to essential services can reduce the need for
excessive travel and fuel consumption.
• Conducting a thorough environmental assessment of the site to identify any
sensitive areas, habitats, or water bodies that need protection.
• Performing energy modeling to optimize the building's orientation and design
for passive solar gain and natural ventilation.
• Incorporating energy-efficient building envelope design, insulation, and high-
performance windows to minimize heating and cooling demands.

2. Long-Term Resilience:
• Designing with climate resilience in mind, considering potential future climate
impacts such as increased temperatures, adverse climate, and water
shortage.
• Exploring the possibility of including renewable energy sources like solar
panels or wind turbines in the design to generate clean energy for the
building.
• Incorporating green spaces, native landscaping, and eco-friendly design
elements to promote ecological balance and enhance the local
environment.

3. Use of Sustainable Materials:

• Prioritizing locally sourced materials to reduce transportation emissions and
support the local economy.
• Using materials with recycled contents and considering their life cycle
impacts, including their production, use, and disposal.

4. Water and Waste Management:

• Designing rainwater harvesting systems to capture and reuse rainwater for
irrigation and non-potable uses.
• Developing a waste management plan to minimize construction waste
generation and divert materials from landfills through recycling and reuse.

DURING CONSTRUCTION PHASE

1. Material Selection:
• Due to Raipur's warm climate, prioritizing the use of heat-reflective materials
for roofing and exterior surfaces. This will help in the reduction of heat
absorption and will lower the urban heat island effect.
• Incorporating energy-efficient building materials and construction techniques
to minimize energy consumption during construction. Choosing low-energy
lighting for construction sites and using energy-efficient equipment.
• Prioritizing the use of locally sourced construction materials to support the
local economy and reduce transportation-related carbon emissions.

2. Water Management:
• Implementing water-efficient practices during construction to minimize water
usage.
• using recycled water for non-potable purposes whenever possible.

3. Noise and Air Pollution Control:

• Implementing measures to control noise and air pollution during construction,
especially in residential areas.

4. Protecting Green Spaces:

• Preserving the existing green spaces and trees on the construction site to
retain biodiversity and improve the urban environment.

5. Planning for construction workers:

• Developing a transportation plan for construction workers that encourage
using of sustainable transportation options, such as public transit or
carpooling.
• Prioritizing the safety and health of construction workers by providing proper
training, protective equipment, and safe working conditions.

POST-CONSTRUCTION PHASE

1. Energy Efficiency and Performance:

• Monitoring and optimizing energy use in HVAC, lighting, and appliances.
• Implementing energy conservation measures to maintain or improve
efficiency.

2. Water Management and Conservation:

• Managing water consumption through leak detection and efficient fixtures.
• Promoting water-saving habits among occupants.

3. Waste Management and Recycling:

• Maintaining effective waste segregation and recycling programs.
• Encouraging proper waste disposal practices to reduce landfill waste.

4. Occupant Engagement:
• Educating occupants about sustainable practices.
• Promoting energy and water conservation and responsible behaviour.

5. Maintenance and Upkeep:

• Following active maintenance to ensure that the systems and materials are
functioning optimally.
• Maintaining landscaped areas with native plants and biodiversity.
• Regularly maintaining HVAC systems and ensure proper ventilation.
• Using low-VOC materials to ensure healthy indoor air for occupants.
• Implementing systems to track and report sustainability metrics.

6. Adaptability and Flexibility:

• Designing spaces for easy adaptation to changing needs, reducing
resource use.
