The Çrémad-Bhägavatam is also full of such narrations

about the relationship between the Supreme Lord and

His devotees; therefore the Çrémad-Bhägavatam is very
dear to the devotees, as stated in the Bhägavatam itself
(12.13.18). Çrémad-bhägavataà puräëam amalaà yad
vaiñëavänäà priyam. In this narration there is nothing
about material activities, economic development, sense
gratification or liberation. Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the
only narration in which the transcendental nature of the
Supreme Lord and His devotees is fully described. Thus
the realized souls in Kåñëa consciousness take continual
pleasure in hearing such transcendental literatures, just
as a young boy and girl take pleasure in association.

Purport, Bhagavad-gétä 10.9

Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the transcendental science not

only for knowing the ultimate source of everything but
also for knowing our relation with Him and our duty
toward perfection of the human society on the basis of
this perfect knowledge.

Preface, Çrémad-Bhägavatam

Since Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu is the Absolute

Personality of Godhead, He is both Bhagavän and
Bhägavatam in person and in sound. Therefore His
process of approaching the Çrémad-Bhägavatam is
practical for all people of the world. It was His wish that
the Çrémad-Bhägavatam be preached in every nook and
corner of the world by those who happened to take their
birth in India.

Introduction, Çrémad-Bhägavatam

Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the purely transcendental urge of

the soul.
Introduction, Çrémad-Bhägavatam

Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the narration of the svarüpa of

the Lord manifested by His internal potency, and this
potency is distinguished from the external potency
which has manifested the cosmic world, which is within
our experience.
SB 1.1.1

Çrémad-Bhägavatam is not only a superior literature but

is the ripened fruit of all Vedic literatures. In other
words, it is the cream of all Vedic knowledge.
SB 1.1.3

The Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the sublime literature which

surpasses all other Vedic scriptures due to its
transcendental qualities. It is transcendental to all
mundane activities and mundane knowledge.
1.1.3
Çrémad-Bhägavatam is so carefully presented that a
sincere and serious person can at once enjoy the ripened
fruit of Vedic knowledge simply by drinking the
nectarean juice through the mouth of Çukadeva
Gosvämé or his bona fide representative.
SB 1.1.3

Çrémad-Bhägavatam is a natural commentation on the

Brahma-sütra, or the Bädaräyaëi Vedänta-sütras. It is
called natural because Vyäsadeva is author of both the
Vedänta-sütras and Çrémad-Bhägavatam, or the essence
of all Vedic literatures.
SB 1.1.7

The Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the transcendental sound

representation of the Personality of Godhead, and thus
it is the full representation of transcendental knowledge
and religious principles.
SB 1.1.23

Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the natural supplementary

commentary on the Vedänta-sütras. The Vedänta-
sütras, or the Brahma-sütras, were compiled by
Vyäsadeva with a view to presenting just the cream of
Vedic knowledge. Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the natural
commentary on this cream.
SB 1.2.3
Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the one unrivaled commentary
on Vedänta-sütra.
SB 1.2.3

Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the spotless Puräëa, and it is

especially meant for those who desire to get out of the
material entanglement permanently.
SB 1.2.4

Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the bona fide explanation of

these Vedic literatures. The Lord can be realized through
the aural reception of the transcendental message, and
that is the only way to experience the transcendental
subject.
SB 1.2.32

This Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the literary incarnation of

God, and it is compiled by Çréla Vyäsadeva, the
incarnation of God. It is meant for the ultimate good of
all people, and it is all-successful, all-blissful and all-
perfect.
SB 1.3.40

Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the literary incarnation of Lord

Çré Kåñëa and is therefore nondifferent from Him.
Çrémad-Bhägavatam should be worshiped as respectfully
as we worship the Lord. Thereby we can derive the
ultimate blessings of the Lord through its careful and
patient study.
1.3.40

Çrémad-Bhägavatam is Lord Çré Kåñëa Himself in the

form of recorded knowledge. Therefore, it is the cream
of all the Vedas, and it contains all historical facts of all
times in relation with Çré Kåñëa. It is factually the
essence of all histories.
1.3.41

Bhagavad-gétä is the preliminary study of the

Bhägavatam. And Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the summum
bonum of life, Lord Çré Kåñëa personified. We must
therefore accept Çrémad-Bhägavatam as the direct
representation of Lord Kåñëa. One who can see Çrémad-
Bhägavatam can see also Lord Çré Kåñëa in person. They
are identical.
1.3.43

Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the special contribution of Çréla

Vyäsadeva.
1.4.3

The Bhagavad-gétä is the spoken message of the Lord

Himself recorded by Vyäsadeva, and the Çrémad-
Bhägavatam is the transcendental narration of the
activities of the same Lord Kåñëa, which alone can satisfy
the hankering desires of the living being for eternal
peace and liberation from miseries. Çrémad-Bhägavatam,
therefore, is meant for all the living beings all over the
universe for total liberation from all kinds of material
bondage.
1.5.13

Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the topmost theological science,

and therefore it can react on the laymen as medicinal
doses. Because it contains the transcendental activities
of the Lord, there is no difference between the Lord and
the literature. The literature is the factual literary
incarnation of the Lord.
1.5.16

Çré Näradajé advised Vyäsadeva to describe the glories of

the Lord just to do good to all eight classes of men, both
good and bad. Çrémad-Bhägavatam is therefore not
meant for any particular class of men or sect. It is for the
sincere soul who actually wants his own welfare and
peace of mind.
1.5.40

Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the repetition of history which

happened some hundreds of millions of years ago.
1.6.11
Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the summum bonum remedy for
suffering humanity in the clutches of mäyä.
1.7.5

Çrémad-Bhägavatam is so made that one becomes at once

engaged in the path of self-realization simply by hearing
the topics. Although it is especially meant for the
paramahaàsas, or those who are totally engaged in self-
realization, it works into the depths of the hearts of those
who may be worldly men.
1.7.8

The theme of Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the cure of the

materialistic disease of the human being, or stopping
completely the pangs of material existence.
1.7.8

rémad-Bhägavatam is also a Puräëa, but the special

significance of this Puräëa is that the activities of the
Lord are central and not just supplementary historical
facts. Çrémad-Bhägavatam is thus recommended by Lord
Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu as the spotless Puräëa.
1.7.12

Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the post-graduate study of

knowledge for one who has thoroughly understood the
principles of the Bhagavad-gétä.
1.10.22
Çrémad-Bhägavatam is a narration about the Personality
of Godhead and the devotees of the Lord like the
Päëòavas. The narration of the Personality of Godhead
and His devotees is absolute in itself, and thus to hear it
with a devotional attitude is to associate with the Lord
and constant companions of the Lord. By the process of
hearing Çrémad-Bhägavatam one can attain the highest
perfection of life, namely going back home, back to
Godhead, without failure.
1.15.51

Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the history of the activities of the

Lord. And the activities of the Lord are performed in
relation with the devotees of the Lord. Therefore, the
history of the devotees is not different from the history
of Lord Kåñëa's activities.
1.18.9

Çrémad-Bhägavatam is mainly full of the narrations of

the activities of the Supreme Unlimited, and therefore
it is the science of bhakti-yoga, or the devotional service
of the Lord. Thus it is para, or supreme, because although
it is enriched with all knowledge and religion, it is
specifically enriched with the devotional service of the
Lord.
1.18.17
Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the postgraduate study for the
student of the Bhagavad-gétä. Both of them are the
science of Kåñëa, the Absolute Truth, and so they are
interdependent.
2.1.29

The bhägavata-dharma, or the cult of Çrémad-

Bhägavatam, is perfectly distinct from the way of fruitive
activities, which are considered by the devotees to be
merely a waste of time.
2.2.3

The Bhagavad-gétä is the preliminary conception of the

Personality of Godhead Çré Kåñëa, and Çrémad-
Bhägavatam is the further explanation of the science of
Godhead.
2.2.35

The highest perfectional thinking for human society is

suggested here by Çukadeva Gosvämé, namely,
sufficiently hearing Çrémad-Bhägavatam. For men in this
age of Kali, when they have lost the perfect vision of life,
this Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the torchlight by which to see
the real path.
2.2.37

Bhagavad-gétä, although containing the high philosophy

of the Vedic wisdom, is for the beginners in the
transcendental science, and Çrémad-Bhägavatam is for
graduates and postgraduates in the transcendental
science.
2.3.14

The crucial test of hearing Çrémad-Bhägavatam is that

one should get positive enlightenment by such an act.
2.4.5

Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the history of such activities of

the Lord, and people who take interest in hearing
Çrémad-Bhägavatam clear their hearts of accumulated
mundane filth. There are a thousand and one rash
literatures on the market, but one who has taken interest
in the Çrémad-Bhägavatam loses all interest in such
filthy literatures.
2.6.46

Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the complete human civilization

dealing with the subject matter of the soul proper. As
soon as a man is raised to the status of the civilization of
the soul, he is fit to be promoted to the kingdom of God.
2.7.18

Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the philosophy of devotional

service and the scientific presentation of man's
relationship with the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
2.7.52
Çrémad-Bhägavatam is certainly a very dear scripture for
all the devotees of the Lord, but it is auspicious even for
the nondevotees also because it explains that even the
nondevotees hovering under the spell of material energy
can be delivered from such clutches if they hear the
narration of the Çrémad-Bhägavatam with devotion and
attention from the right source representing the Lord by
disciplic succession.
2.8.2

Çrémad-Bhägavatam, which is full of narrations of the

activities of the Supreme Lord, is auspicious for all living
beings residing in every planet. One who takes it as
belonging to a particular sect is certainly mistaken.
2.8.2

The sound of Çrémad-Bhägavatam is transcendental, and

the resonance of Çrémad-Bhägavatam is as good as that
of the Vedas. Thus the topic of the Çrémad-Bhägavatam
is the science of both the Lord and the living entity.
Regular reading or hearing of Çrémad-Bhägavatam is also
performance of bhakti-yoga, and one can attain the
highest perfection simply by the association of Çrémad-
Bhägavatam.
2.9.4
Çrémad-Bhägavatam is not like ordinary fiction or
mundane literature. It is unlimited in strength, and
however one may expand it according to one's own
ability, Bhägavatam still cannot be finished by such
expansion.
2.9.44

Çrémad-Bhägavatam, being the sound representation of

the Lord, is simultaneously explained in four verses and
in four billion verses all the same, inasmuch as the Lord
is smaller than the atom and bigger than the unlimited
sky. Such is the potency of Çrémad-Bhägavatam.
2.9.44

There are two important kåñëa-kathäs current in the

world—Bhagavad-gétä and Çrémad-Bhägavatam.
Bhagavad-gétä is kåñëa-kathä because it is spoken by
Kåñëa, whereas Çrémad-Bhägavatam is kåñëa-kathä
because it narrates about Kåñëa.
3.5.10

The real purpose of Vedänta-sütra is explained by the

author himself in the Çrémad-Bhägavatam, and anyone
trying to understand Vedänta-sütra without reference to
Çrémad-Bhägavatam is certainly misguided.
3.5.12
The Çrémad-Bhägavatam is called the paramahaàsa-
saàhitä, the treatise for the highest class of human
beings.
3.22.19

Bhagavad-gétä is the instruction given by Kåñëa, and

Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the book containing topics
exclusively about Kåñëa and His devotees. These two
books are the special nectar of the words of Kåñëa.
4.7.44

Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the supreme instruction of the

Vedas. Galitaà phalam: the ripened fruit of the Vedas is
Çrémad-Bhägavatam.
6.5.30

Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the pure transcendental process

of religion.
6.16.40

Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the Mahä-Puräëa, the essence of

all the Puräëas.
7.2.27

Hearing from the text of Çrémad-Bhägavatam is

considered the most important process of hearing.
Çrémad-Bhägavatam is full of transcendental chanting of
the holy name, and therefore the chanting and hearing
of Çrémad-Bhägavatam are transcendentally full of
mellows.
7.5.23

Simply by understanding Çrémad-Bhägavatam, one can

understand the science of the activities of the devotees,
the activities of the demons, the permanent abode and
the temporary abode. Through Çrémad-Bhägavatam,
everything is perfectly known.
7.10.43

Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the easiest way of directly

approaching Kåñëa.
10.12.7

The whole purpose of Çrémad-Bhägavatam is to arouse

our love for Lord Kåñëa, and one should not foolishly
misunderstand this great purpose.
11.11.28

The exclusive purpose of Çrémad-Bhägavatam is to

convince the conditioned soul to execute unconditional
loving surrender to the Lord and go back home, back to
Godhead.
12.5.1

Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the best of all Puräëas.

12.13.3
All other Puranic scriptures shine forth in the assembly
of saintly devotees only as long as that great ocean of
nectar, Çrémad-Bhägavatam, is not heard.
12.13.14

Çrémad-Bhägavatam is declared to be the essence of all

Vedänta philosophy. One who has felt satisfaction from
its nectarean mellow will never be attracted to any other
literature.
12.13.15

Just as the Gaìgä is the greatest of all rivers, Lord Acyuta

the supreme among deities and Lord Çambhu [Çiva] the
greatest of Vaiñëavas, so Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the
greatest of all Puräëas.
12.13.16

Çrémad-Bhägavatam is Çréla Vyäsadeva’s last, mature

contribution
MADHYA 19.17

“Çrémad-Bhägavatam is as great as Kåñëa, the Supreme

Lord and shelter of everything. In each and every verse
of Çrémad-Bhägavatam and in each and every syllable,
there are various meanings.
24.318
‘The meaning of the Vedänta-sütra is present in Çrémad-
Bhägavatam. The full purport of the Mahäbhärata is also
there. The commentary of the Brahma-gäyatré is also
there and fully expanded with all Vedic knowledge.
Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the supreme Puräëa, and it was
compiled by the Supreme Personality of Godhead in His
incarnation as Vyäsadeva. There are twelve cantos, 335
chapters and eighteen thousand verses.’
Garuòa Puräëa.
MADHYA 25.143

Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu has personally preached the

transcendental truths and mellows of Çrémad-
Bhägavatam. Çrémad-Bhägavatam and the Supreme
Personality of Godhead are identical, for Çrémad-
Bhägavatam is the sound incarnation of Çré Kåñëa.
MADHYA 25.266

Çrémad-Bhägavatam is understandable only for one who

can follow in the footsteps of Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu.
ANTYA 5.131 (For promotion of Sri Caitanya
Caritamrta)
Çrémad-Bhägavatam is compiled by the greatest sage,
Vyäsadeva, and it is a work coming out of his mature
experience.

TLC 15
The purpose of the Upaniñads, Vedänta-sütra and
Çrémad-Bhägavatam is one and the same. If one studies
Çrémad-Bhägavatam carefully, he will find that all the
Upaniñads and the Vedänta-sütra are nicely explained
therein.
TLC 22

Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the essence of Vedic culture. It is

a wish-fulfilling tree, and we can take whatever we want
from it.
TLK V 1

Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the natural and faultless

commentary on the Vedänta-sütra. This is Lord
Caitanya's opinion.
RTW 3

The Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the natural commentary on

the Vedänta-sütra and offers solid education on how to
conduct life perfectly.
RTW 5

The Çrémad-Bhägavatam is meant for giving

enlightenment to all people of the world. It is not the
philosophy of a sectarian religion; it is meant for all
human beings. People should take advantage of the
instructions in the Çrémad-Bhägavatam and make their
lives perfect. That is the mission of our Kåñëa
consciousness movement.
DHARMA 4

Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the spotless description of how to

love God. There is no better description. From the
beginning it teaches how to love God.
TQE 7

Kåñëa-upadeça means this Bhagavad-gétä, the

instruction given by Kåñëa. That is kåñëa-upadeça. And
kåñëa-upadeça is also Çrémad-Bhägavatam. Çrémad-
Bhägavatam is full of instructions by which one can
become Kåñëa conscious.
4.14 BGL

As God is one, similarly, to understand Him, there is only

one literature. That is Çrémad-Bhägavatam. Bhagavad-
gétä is the preliminary study of Çrémad-Bhägavatam.
