an essential part of our lives. The moment you enter this cruel

19
world, where each man is for himself, there are some near and
dear ones out there who will do anything to ensure your
happiness.
We are nothing more than a vulnerable and fragile object,
without someone taking care of us on our arrival in this world.
Despite all the odds, your family will take care of your well-
being, and try their best to provide you the greatest comforts in
the world. No one out there, except your family must forgive
the endless number of mistakes you may make in your life.
Apart from teaching you forgive and forget lessons, they-are
always there for you, when you need them the most.
Family is the only place where children study a lot after school.
In school, teachers teach children about the subjects which will
help them to find a good job in future. But at home, parents
teach children about good habits. They are not only the
elements which help the children to shape their personalities
but they also prepare them a sustainable and bright future.
A good family makes a greater society. Father, mother,
children have to work in order to build a strong family. If any
one of them fail, the whole family may collapse. The good
name of the whole family can be ruined by a single member of
the family. In order to avoid that unhappy scenario, every
family member has to work hard and try their best. As a result,

II- Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions.
Did you know that on average we forget about 80% of the NOTES
medical information a doctor might give us? This fascinating
information came to light as a result of a study carried out by
Utrecht University. What is even more interesting is that
almost half of what we think we remember is wrong.
Why do you think this is? Well, it’s not as complicated as
you may think. You see, going to the doctor fills most people
with anxiety and when we are really nervous and stressed we
are more likely to focus on the diagnosis rather than the
treatment. Therefore, we know what is wrong with us but
have no idea what to do about it.
Here are some good tips to keep in mind when seeing a
doctor. Always write down any important information. What
would be even better is, if your doctor agreed, to record your
consultation. This way, you can replay the advice at home,
where you are more likely to absorb it. If you believe the
situation is serious or you’re really worried, seek the help of a
family member. Just ask them to accompany you to listen in.
This way you can be absolutely sure about what the doctor
has told you and avoid falling into the same trap that most
people do.

1. According to the passage, the information doctors give us ____.

A. is about 50% wrong B. is only 80% correct
C. is mostly forgotten D. is usually not enough

D. they usually have a family member with them
48

A. play it to your family members to get their opinions
B. refer to it later to better understand your condition
C. replay it to write down any important information
D. use it as evidence against your doctor if necessary

III- Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate
the correct answer to each of the questions.
My first piece of advice to people who want to start getting NOTES
fit is: don’t buy an exercise bike. Typically, people who buy
them use them for a week or so and then forget about them.
They are effective if they are used regularly but you need to
be determined. Most people will find it much easier to go for
a gentle jog around the park.
As well as being easy to do, jogging is also relatively
cheap compared to most other sports. You don’t need to buy
expensive clothes if you’re just going running around the park
or on the beach. The main thing is that they’re comfortable,
and that they keep you warm in the winter and cool in the
summer. There is one piece of equipment, however, that you
will have to spend time and money on, and that’s your
running shoes. Remember that you are not looking for a
fashion item, but for something that will support your feet and
protect you from injury. They can be expensive, but if they
are good quality they will last you a long time. It's always best
to get expert advice, and the best place for that is a sports
shop.
As for the actual jogging, the secret is to start gently, and
not to do too much at the beginning – especially if you
haven’t had any exercise for a long time. Try a mixture of
walking and running for ten minutes about three times a week
at first. Once you are happy doing that you can then start to
increase the amount you do gradually. After a few months
you should hope to be able to run at a reasonable speed for
49
twenty minutes three or four times a week. It's important that
you feel comfortable with whatever you do. If you do, you’ll
start to enjoy it and will probably keep doing it. If it makes
you feel uncomfortable, you’ll probably stop after a short time
and return to your bad habits. In any case, training too hard is
not very effective. Research has shown that somebody who
exercises for twice as long or twice as hard as another person
doesn’t automatically become twice as fit.

1. Which of the following would serve as the best title for the passage?
A. Exercise bikes B. Gentle jogging C. Keeping fit D. Running shoes

A. Exercise bikes do not help you get fit.

A. go jogging around a park or on the beach
B. go to sports shop for high quality running shoes

Water sports are as challenging as they are fun. Although water sports are not as
popular as basketball or football, activities such as parasailing, water skiing, water
polo, wakeboarding, jet skiing and competitive swimming interest many people.
Ail water sports have an element of danger involved, which is why it is important
to follow these safety tips before you dive in.
Step 1: Learn how to swim. Sure, it seems obvious, but it is also extremely
important. Do not even think about skiing, tubing, wakeboarding or water polo if
you cannot stay afloat in water deeper than your height.
Step 2: Check your equipment and your life safety tools. Count your life vests
and have floatation devices nearby. If you are engaging in a sport that requires a lot
of equipment, such as wakeboarding, go over every piece to ensure proper
functioning.
Step 3: Be physically fit. Put your pride aside and get in shape. Most water
sports are incredibly strenuous and require the player to have physical endurance. It
can be dangerous to participate in a water sport, such as water skiing or
wakeboarding, when your body isn’t ready.
Step 4: Save the tricks for the professionals. If you are an amateur, do not
attempt water sport tricks. It is tempting to push to the next level with sports like
skiing and sailing, but train heavily first.
Step 5: Recruit a spotter. When you do water sports, always have an extra person
on hand to spot for you. This includes indoor sports like' water polo, diving and
competitive swimming.

football. ……………

COMPOUND SENTENCES
1- Definition
A compound sentence joins two or more independent clauses, also known as simple
sentences. Independent clauses are phrases that can stand alone as a complete
thought. They're not dependent upon one another to express a complete thought,
but they tie together similar ideas.
Ex 1:
Two independent clauses: I love my dog. I never go anywhere without her.
 Compound sentence: I love my dog so I never go anywhere without her.
Ex 2:
Two independent clauses: Salmon is delicious. It's good for you too.
 Compound sentence: Salmon is delicious and it's good for you too.

63
2- Coordinating Conjunctions
- In order to connect independent clauses, you need to use a coordinating
conjunction. The seven coordinating conjunctions in English are: for, and, nor,
but, or, yet, so.
- You can use the acronym FANBOYS to help you remember the seven
coordinating conjunctions. When you join two independent clauses with a
coordinating conjunction, you can add a comma to prevent writing a run-on
sentence. (optional)
3- Important notes
- Yet & But: As conjunctions, “but” and “yet” are interchangeable. One is often
substituted for the other to avoid repetition. However, “yet” is used to add
something that seems surprising because of what you have just said.
- Or & Nor:
+ Use "nor" to combine two negative expressions, remember that in the second
expression, subject-auxiliary inversion happens.
Ex: I don’t usually wake up at 6 a.m., nor do I like to wake up at 5 a.m.
+ If the second part of the negative is “a noun, adjective, or adverb phrase”,
"or" should be used, instead.
Ex: He never plays football or tennis.
She does not enjoy music or art."

IV – PHONETICS
1- Sound cluster /est/
a. How to pronounce? This sound is a combination of /e/, /s/ and /t/
- To create the /e/, the middle of the tongue rounds slightly upward and the sides of
the tongue may lightly touch the top and bottom side teeth. The lips and jaw are
loose and relaxed.
- The production of the sound /s/ soon follows. The front of the tongue is placed
close to the tooth ridge. The tip of the tongue should be close to the upper backside
of the top front teeth. The tongue is kept tense as air is pushed between a small
groove along the center of the tip of the tongue and the front of the tooth ridge. The
front sides of the tongue touch the side teeth toward the front of the mouth. The lips
are held slightly tense during the sound.
- Finally, we end the sound with /t/. To create the /t/, air is briefly prevented from
leaving the vocal tract when the tip of the tongue presses against the tooth ridge
while the sides of the tongue press against the upper side teeth. The sound is
aspirated when the air is released.
b. Spelling: “est” as in best, request, west …..

73
c. Practice: Read out these following sentences.

a. How to pronounce? This sound is a combination of / /, /n/ and /t/
- To create the / /: put your tongue in the middle and in the centre of your mouth
and make a short voiced sound.
- The production of the sound /n/ soon follows. The air is blocked from leaving the
mouth by pressing the tip against the tooth ridge and the sides of the front of the
tongue against the side teeth. The soft palate drops, allowing air to pass out through
the nose. The sound is voiced, so the vocal cords vibrate while producing it.
- Finally, we end the sound with /t/.
b. Spelling:
- “ent” as in environment, document, talent, …
- “ant” as in consonant, important …
c. Practice: Read out these following sentences.
- It’s an instrument of ancient Egyptian.

3- Sound cluster /e t/
a. How to pronounce? /e t/ is a combination of diphthong /e / and /t/.
- To pronounce /e /, begin with the tongue pushed somewhat forward but in a
neutral position in the mouth. Then, as the jaw closes slightly, move the body of the
tongue upward until it is near the tooth ridge. The front sides of the tongue touch
the inside of the top teeth at the end of the sound.
- Finally, we end the sound with /t/.
b. Spelling: “ate” as in fate, hate, date …
c. Practice: Read out these following sentences.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s was the only-surviving NOTES
son of Leopold and Maria Pertl Mozart. Leopold was a
successful composer, violinist, and assistant concert master
at the Salzburg court. Wolfgang's mother, a constantly ill
housewife, was born to a middle class family of local
community leaders. His only sister was Maria Anna. With
their father’s encouragement and guidance, they both
were introduced to music at an early age. Leopold started
Anna on keyboard when she was seven, as three-year old
Wolfgang looked on.
Mimicking her playing, Wolfgang quickly began to
show a strong understanding of chords, tonality, and tempo.
Soon, he too was being tutored by his father.
Leopold was a devoted and task-oriented teacher to
86
both his children. He made the lessons fun, but also insisted
on a strong work ethic and perfection. Fortunately, both
children excelled well in these areas. Recognising their
special talents, Leopold devoted much of his time to their
education in music as well as other subjects. Wolfgang
soon showed signs of excelling beyond his father's
teachings with an early composition at age five and
demonstrating outstanding ability on harpsichord and the
violin. He would soon go on to play the piano, organ and
viola.

87
III. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate
the correct answer to each of the questions.
In the 1960s, it took pop and rock groups one or two NOTES
days to record other their songs. Nowadays, it can take
months and months. Many rock groups begin by recording
only one instrument, for example, the voice. Then they
record other instruments – electric piano, synthesiser,
guitars, drums and so on.
Next, they might use a computer to add special effects.
Finally, they ‘mix’ all the instruments until they get the
sound that they want. This means that a CD or cassette will
always sound very different from a live concert.
Music engineers have developed a new eomputer
programme that will change the future of music. A
computer can analyse a singer's voice. Then if you give the
computer the lyrics and music of a song, the computer can
'sing' it in that voice. This means that a singer only needs to
record one song and the computer can then sing other songs
in the singer's own voice. Singers can sing new songs many
years after they have died.
Most of us listen to music for pleasure, but for the
record companies, music is a product, the same as soap
powder. When a record company finds a new group (or
'band'), they first try to develop the band's 'profile'. They
will try to create an 'image' for the band that they think will
attract young people. Instead of allowing the band’s full
artistic freedom, they will often tell the band what they
should wear, what they should say and how they should
sing and play.
In recent year, many rock groups have started their own
record companies because they say that the big companies
are too commercial.

the tip against the tooth ridge and the sides of the front of the tongue against the
side teeth.

vocal tract when the tip of the tongue presses against the tooth ridge while the sides
of the tongue press against the upper side teeth. The sound is aspirated when the air
is released.

cardboard box next to a newsstand? No, but Nora did.
She wasn't even four, but she pulled at my coat sleeve and

are now seen by many companies as a direct way to customers’ hearts. Brands are
now asking powerful influencers to market their products. With some influencers

STRESS PATTERNS: COMPOUND NOUNS & NOUN GROUPS
1- Compound nouns
- Some nouns consist of more than one word. These are compound nouns.
Compound nouns can be formed in different ways. The most common way is to put
two nouns together (noun + noun); other common types are adjective + noun and
verb + noun.
 noun + noun: car park, Iceland, shopkeeper, website …
 adjective + noun: blackberry, greenhouse, blue bird …
 verb + noun: breakwater fall-guy go-kart runway
- Compound nouns normally have the spoken stress on the first part:
Ex: CAR park, BATHroom, WEBsite, BROther-in-law, DOORbell, CHECK-in

- However, not all compound nouns follow this rule. Some have spoken stress on
the second part, especially in proper names and titles:
Ex: Mount EVerest, Prime MINister, New YORK …
2- Noun groups
- A noun phrase consists of a noun or pronoun, which is called the head, and any
dependent words before or after the head. Dependent words give specific
information about the head.

THE VANISHING INVENTION NOTES
In 1998, a Valencian professor made an amazing claim.
Professor Antonio Cervilla discovered how to use water as
a substitute for petrol. The scientist said that you could
drive from Bilbao to Valencia on just half a litre of water.
His invention uses a molybdenum compound to break
down water into hydrogen and oxygen. Unlike other
methods, no electricity is required and the reaction happens
at atmospheric temperature. This impressive technology is

137
based on the way plant enzymes break down water. The use
of molybdenum is the perfect choice because, although
rare, it is cheap and found all around the planet.
Since the claims were made, nothing more has been
heard about this fabulous technology. There is no
explanation for the disappearance anywhere on the internet,
apart from a list of similar inventions which have also
vanished. An inventor from the Philipines called Daniel
Dingel developed a water-fuelled car but was arrested and
sentenced to 20 years in prison. If this technology were to
become widely available, it would prove disastrous for
petrol station owners and would also save the planet from
the impending environmental catastrophes being caused
by pollution.

THE STORY OF COCA-COLA NOTES
Coca-Cola was invented in 1886 by John Pemberton, a
druggist living in Atlanta. The original drink was a type of
syrup, using coca leaves, sugar and cola nuts, plus a few
other secret ingredients! Pemberton sold it as a medicine;
and with its coca (the source of cocaine), it must have made
people feel good!
Nevertheless, Pemberton’s medicine was not very
successful, so he sold his secret formula to another
druggist, Asa Candler. Candler was interested, because he
had another idea that Pemberton’s “medicine” would be
much better if it was mixed with soda. Candler was thus the
man who really invented the drink Coca-Cola. Candler also
advertised his new drink, and soon people were going to
drugstores just to get a drink of Coca-Cola.
Before long, other people became interested in the
product, including a couple of businessmen who wanted to
sell it in bottles. Candler sold them a licence to bottle the
drink, and very quickly the men became millionaires. The
famous bottle, with its very distinctive shape, was designed
in 1916. And the famous Coca-Cola logo is the most

Music can move the soul. It can be a very strong influence. Some music can
calm us down, but some music can make us wild! How does music affect us?
Music is used in a variety of ways. It is used in the medical field as a source of
research and as a sort of therapy as well. Music has been used as therapy for
seizures, to lower blood pressure, treat mental illness, treat depression, aid in
healing, treat stress and insomnia and premature infants. Musicologist Julius
Portnoy found that it can change heart rates, increase or decrease blood pressure,
effect energy levels, and digestion, positively or negatively, depending on the type
of music. Calming music, such as classical music was found to have a very calming
effect on the body, and cause the increase of endorphins, thirty minutes of such
music was equal to the effect of a dose of valium. Both hemispheres of the brain
are involved in processing music. The music in these studies is not the "lyrics", but
the music itself, the melody, the tones, the tunes, the rhythm, the chords.
Conversely music has also been documented to cause sickness. The right, or wrong
146
music, rather, can be like a poison to the body. Studies have been done on
plants where loud hard rock music, for instance, killed plants and soft classical
music, make the plants grow faster. Music is very powerful, like a drug and can
even be an addiction. According to Patty Hearst, a researcher on music, it was
documented that music was used in the aid of brainwashing some people. In the
book,” Elevator Music” by Joseph Lanza, it was stated that certain types of music
over prolonged periods in certain conditions were shown to cause seizures.

Music influences people in different ways or the same person differently at
different times. Music may seem to influence people differently. That is because
people can react differently to the music. We are able to apply a choosing process
to the music we hear. If someone hates jazz, then a jazz piece with a positive effect
will probably not make him feel good. A happy song might appear to make an
angry person angrier, yet it is not the music itself that is creating the anger; rather it
is the positive effect of the music. The angry person does not want to accept the
song's happy feeling: it points out his already existing anger, and makes that anger
come to the surface. When a piece of music is played and we are listening to it, our
body, mind, and feelings are being affected. The musicians of ancient cultures such
as China, India, Turkey and Greece understood the effects of music. In fact,
Pathagoras, in ancient Greece, introduced a whole science that concerned them.
Because the musicians of these ancient cultures understood these effects, they
created music that was positive, uplifting, and beneficial. Once the effects of music
are better understood, the next step is to gain a better understanding of the music
around us, and what effect it is actually having.
