RR Chapters 9& 10

The role of the law in Israel, the law of the new covenant.
The Pentateuch is often referred to as "the Law". The commandments are found in only four
of the five books of Moses. Question: Does the old commandment apply to us today?
We are not expected to keep the Old Testament Law because we are under the New
Covenant (practical example; there are no temples today)... but what about Matthew 5:18?
Old Testament Covenant - it is not obligatory to keep all these laws, but it is important for us
to know them because we are also part of God's great story and it can help us to find our
place in it.
The Old Testament is not our testament. We should remember this. None of the Old
Testament laws are binding on us unless they are repeated in the New Covenant.
Two categories of laws in the O.T;
1) The Israelite civil laws; various crimes applied to the citizens of ancient Israel, they show
God's own character.
2) The Israelite ritual laws; how to worship, responsibilities of priests, ceremonies, etc.

Jesus came to establish a new covenant. Part of the old covenant is renewed in the new
covenant (ethical law). Now we are under the law of Christ. For example, the new law of
Christ includes 10 commandments.
The fact that the law of the Old Covenant is not ours doesn't mean it's not important to us.
It shows what it meant for Israel to be God's people and gives examples.
Nowhere in the Old Testament is it written that anyone was saved by keeping the Law.
The problem was that the Israelites chose not to obey the law. It wasn't because they
couldn't. They were rebellious and disobedient.

The prophetic books are considered to be some of the most difficult in the Bible. Why is
that? Because of a misunderstanding of their form and function.
Minor prophets are no less important (last 12 books of the Old Testament). Major prophets
(Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel)
Term "minor" in Latin stands for shorter, not less important.

Questions I have;
Jesus didn't say that we are still under the law (that's confusing (Luke 16:16-17).
What he meant was that the law could not be changed? It cannot be changed, but it is
possible to replace it? but not completely?

What new ideas;

It is all about balance. God called the people of Old Testament Israel and Judah to stability
and balance between faith and action. We don't live in the Old Testament, but the same
applies to us.

Possible application;
I might be wrong, but I understood that ritual laws no longer apply to us, but moral laws like
the 10 Commandments are still current.
