Group Project on Hazards in Stabroek Market

INTRODUCTION
When Ms. Mohammed told us about this project members came together and discussed
what place would be best suitable to conduct such project, after a long discussion between group
members we came to the conclusion of Stabroek Market. This project was done to identify
hazards in the work environment that may put persons at risk. These hazards identified was
physical, mechanical, ergonomic, biological, safety and psychological.
The Stabroek Market is known as Guyana's oldest and largest market. It was named by
the Dutch in honour of the director of the Dutch West Indian Company, Nicholas Van Gleenisnk
the Lord of Castricum, Bahim and Stabroek stands as an eloquent reminder of the nation's
cultural and social heritage (Kandasammy, 2005). It was constructed about one hundred thirty-
five (135) years ago by the Edge Moor Iron Company of Delaware in the year 1880, housed in
iron and steel structure with a prominent peaked tower at the edge of Demerara River, hovering
over the downtown Georgetown like a prayer. (Johnson, 2016)

People of all race and culture go to this market, both to make a living and to buy
groceries. This loud and busy place is always occupied with vendor, music, taxis,
buses and even boats at the stelling. Fresh fruits and vegetables; seafood such as
fishes, shrimps, craps can all be found at this market. (GxMedia, 2018) Delicious
pastries, cookies and cakes are also sold around this historic place. It provides not
only to the Guyanese people but to foreigners with their necessary needs; different
things of many varieties. It is a meeting area; a synergy of subcultures, an
inheritance passed from generation to generation. It is a good experience and a
representation of Guyanese culture. (Johnson, 2016)
