If you're not a fan of the default font in Windows 10, Segoe, you can change it to your preferred font
with a simple registry tweak. This will change the fonts for Windows 10's icons, menus, title bar text,
File Explorer, and more.
First we'll back up your registry settings, so you can reverse the changes in case you don't like them
later. Then we'll simply update the registry with a .reg file.
1. Press Win+R.

Replace Verdana in the last line with the name of the font you want to use as your system
default. You might have to open your Fonts folder (search for "fonts" in the Windows taskbar) to get
the full, correct name of the font.

7. In the File name field, give the file a .reg extension. You can name it anything, as long as it
ends in .reg.
8. Click Save.
9. Doubleclick the registry file you just created to run it. You'll be prompted to allow the file to
make changes to the computer and confirm you want to continue, then get confirmation the changes
were successfully made.
10. Restart your computer to see the font change applied across Windows 10.
Just don't change the default font to something like Wingdings, lest you render your system
completely unreadable.

So... Ive used this to try something new out out and... I don't like it. How can I get Segoe UI back?

FYI, this will render the "Segoe UI" family of fonts useless for all other purposes as well. So if you like
to be able to use these, don't use this hack.

Never mind. It only works when I'm typing this. Other than that it doesn't work. Do i need to try and
restart again?
This worked for me typing, but not for the other font on the page. That's what I was looking for.
not only did this not work, but it made my computer slower than a dead sloth. how do i undo this?

It worked for me first time. I confirmed these instructions by finding a similar YouTube video, as
editing the registry can be "scary" for a nonprogrammer. The only expansion of the stepbystep
instructions (because I had to reread and wasn't sure what the next step was) would be to continue
the Save As instructions for the backup after Step 3. Also, it would be helpful to reassure readers
that we don't need to change the "Windows NT" portion of the .TXT / .REG file, as I remember this
as a version of Windows from years ago.

i got it to work finally! after several restarts, redownloads of Century Gothic, and recreations and
deletions of the two .reg files the font is finally sticking in most places, however; it is not applying to
the start menu nor in windows 10 apps (the title border is the only thing with Century Gothic in
windows 10 apps). is there a line i can add to my .reg file that will overwrite/substitute Century Gothic
in even MORE places? thanks for the difficult, but functional tutorial...

ironically, your font registry tutorial worked for me BEFORE i restarted my computer, but i restarted
anyway to ensure the registry would apply systemwide. once my computer started back up, not only
were the font changes GONE, but my computer was also, as Sinanga Jina said, "as slow as a baby
tortoise." please clarify whether, or not, "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00" is supposed to be
included at the beginning of our notepad to create our registry file. thanks for the ALMOST functional
tutorial!...
that does't work....its just the same as it was before...the only change is tha the computer is now as
slow a baby tortoise

I implemented this because I could not read the normal font in windows too light. I simply made the
default a bold font.
I can read the files in windows now however everything else is now too bold.
Anybody have a way to go back to the win 7, win XP, win 3.11 method of an item by item
customization?

I did as the instructions said and an error pops up saying that it was written incorrectly or I have
insufficient privileges to run the program. Can someone tell me what I did wrong?

In Changing Win 10 fonts, paragraph 4, does"Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00" have to go into
the .reg fil OR does the .reg file start with "HKEY....."?
Thanks for a very handy article.
