NOTE TO USERS
In June 1973 the Department of the Army announced a change in U. S. Army doctrine concerning
the su‘uctm'e of command echelons above vision level. The eect of this change is to eliminate the
eld army as a nu'mal cmnmand echelon above the cups. A discussion of these new concepts is found
in Chapter 1 of this text. Users should be aware, however, that as of the publication date of this text,
the full impact and ramications of the new docu'ine are su'll under review, and affected eld manuals
and TOE's are yet to be rewriuen. Since most of the organizations desu'ibed in the text are assigned
below division level, most of the infmam contained herein will remain largely unchanged. There-
fore, no attempt has been made to artidpate future TOE changes, and all references to the eld army
a the FASCOM contained in the text should be considered in the light of the new docu-ine.

1-5. Organizational echelons above division.
_a_. General. The u‘adional concepts of structmal organization within the U. S. Army,
division ca'ps — eld army — army group -- theater army, have remained basically unchanged a’nce
—
the 1930's. The evoluu'on of today's modern dividon, however, into a powerful, mobile, and relau'vely
self-contained force dictates that the higher echelons suppang it or directing its employment should be
as few as posble. Accadingly, in June 1973 the Department of the Army announced a change in Army
doctrine for echelons above division level. The effect of this change is to eliminate the eld army as a
normal canmand echelon above the corps. The functions formerly performed by the eld army as bmh a
tactical and adminisuau‘ve headquarters have been passed to higher and lower canmand echelons.
1-1
Q. Echelons above egg .
(1) In waru'me, a theater army headquarters will exercise command less weratiOnal
caol over U. S. Army forces. It will interfacewith Department of the Army on all support matters
involving U. S. Army forces in the theater. In peaceu'me, the theater army headquarters may command
all Army faces in the theater. In this event it must carry out comingency planm'ng and be prepared to
respond to emergencies.
(2) Nmnally, the next echelon above the corps in the operatimal chain of command
willbe a theater headquarters. That headquarters may be a unied, or cmnbined command. When
unusual circmnstances require a U. S. Army echelon between the caps and theater headquarters, it
will have a tacu'cal funaion only and will be designated as a numbered army headquarta-s. The head-
quarta's will be tailored to the situation; hence, its a‘ze and canposition will vary and be established
in tables of distribution. Establishment of a numbered army headquarters will be an exception to the
rule, but when required theater army will provide the resources for this headquarters.
g. The eggs.
(1) The next echelon above the division will be the corps. The ca-ps will have tactical,
logistic, and adminisu‘ave functions and will have organic cunbat, combat swport, and combat
service support elem ents structured for the visualized employment. In wartime, the caps is under the
werational control of theater but continues to be under the command of theater army fq‘ amninimau've
and logistic matters. The caps will be concerned with translating the broad direcu'ves of higher head-
quarters into tactical, logsu‘c, and administrative tasle. It will exercise territorial control of the combat
zone to include allocating space for units werating in the combat zone but not assigned or under the
werational control of the caps. Thus, the tactical considerau'ons fa- employment of the ca'ps are
relatively unchanged, but is service support funcu'ons have been expanded to include many of those
previously performed by the field army.
(2) The cups headquarters will be dea’gned to conu'ol ve divisions, mae or less, and
the requim'te cmnbat support and combat service support faces necessary to round 01m and suiain such a
ghting face. It is envia‘oned that a ve division corps can be assigned an area approximately 140
ldlaneters wide and 250 ldlmneters deep in a non-aaive nuclear environment. The ca'ps organization
is en‘ble and the cmnposiu'on of each will be dierert, depending on the circmnstances. The principle
inuences on the compom'tion of the corps include the mism‘on, enemy, terrain, and constraints such as
availability of forces. An illuslrau've organizau‘onal chart depicng corps organization is shown in
gme 1- 1. The elements cunprising the caps are depicted by type and not size, in order to highlight
the exibility of the aganizational sanctum.

(3) The ca'ps will have a COSCOM which, unlike the DISCOM, is shuctured to support
varying combat, combat suppqt and combat service suppa't elements of the force. The theater army
commander will assigi ca'nbat service mport units to the COSCOM (corps) as they arrive in the theater,
'om other COSCOM's, or -om the TASCOM. These assignments are made in order to eedively support
the theater commander's operational plans. Combat service support units will not always be moved
laterally -om one COSCOM to anaher to coincide with the movements of tactical units. Adual move-

located where it can best do its job.
(4) Corps rear area is expanded to include tarain formerly in the field army service

area. The rear portion of the famer FA SA is now in the cmnmunicaons zone (COMMZ).
(5) A theater army support command (TASCOM), a major subordinate unit of the theater
army, will provide general support to the canbat zone with its functional commands. These are the
personnel cmnmand, medical command, materiel cmnmand, transportation command and may include
an engineer cmnmand. These organizaons may only be brigade or youp ze if the scope and magnitude
of their missions do 11 justify a geater capability. The TASCOM provides GS to the COMMZ with the
same organizations, and provides DS, RAP and other area type suppa't thrwgh its theater army area
canmand (TAACOM). The tradiu‘onal functions and responsibiliu'es of the TASCOM are relatively un-
changed. The faciliu'es, units and terrain of the rear portion of the forma‘ field army service area are
now in the COMMZ. Those GS units in this area may be assigned to one of the TASCOM funconal
canmands and the DS units may be assigned to the TAACOM.
1-6. Aviation organimons. The aviaon units desm'ibed in this text are divided into two categq'ies —
_a_. Divim'onal aviaon - the organic aviation and aviau‘on support assets of the airmobile,
infantry, airborne, mechanized, and armored divisions. These units are discussed in Part One of this
text.
_l_>. Nondivisional aviation - the aviau'on and aviau'on simpa't assets assigned within the
structure of the caps, excluding the divisions. Um‘ts containing such assets are discussed in Part Two
of this text.

(6) Mess facilities for headquarters and headquarters company.
_e_. Limitations. The aviation general support company, infanu'y division combat aviau'on
battalion, has the following limitations:
(1) It is partially dependent on higher headquarters or adjacent units for local security.
(2) It can oer only limited resistance against hostile ground attack or enemy guerrilla
action.
i. Conc of emplgment. The aviation general support company operates and maimains a
heliport adjacent to the division main command post to support the division commander and his staff.
This heliport has a day and night capability but nmally is na: insuumented. Helicopters of the cqnpany
are numally employed on a mission-type baa's.
2-5. Air cavalry t‘oop, armored cavalry squadron, armored division, infantry dividon, infantry
division (mechanized), or air cavalry tr00p separate.
_a, Description. The air cavalry u'oop is a combat face with combat elements mounted can-
pletely in organic airuaft. The rmit combines the characteristics of taaical three-dimens’onal mobility
and highly desu~ucve aerial firepower.
_l_)_. General.
(3) A 'gmnen . Organic to the armored cavalry squadron, armored division, infanu'y
division, or infanu'y divia'on (mechanized), TOE 17-105H.
(4) Capabilities.
(g) Performs aerial and yound reconnaissance and prwides secm'ity for unit to
which assigned or attached.
2-21
m Provides responsive aerial delivery of antitank fires against mechanized forces.
Li) Conducts chemical agent detection and radiological monitoring and survey
operations, nuclear target acquim‘tion, and nuclear damage assessment.
Note. This unit is dependent upon the headquarters and headquarters troop for mess facilities.
(_a_) General.
_1_. Employment of the air cavalry troop is based upon effective use of its
unique characterisu‘cs and capabilities and an understanding of its limit ations. The air cavalry troop
may be employed on variais types of tactical missions. It also may be employed on independent missions
if required. The troop is primarily employed in close conjunction with armored cavalry ground units so
that the capabilin'es of ground and air elements will complement each other. The air cavalry troop -
_2_. The troop operates largely at nap-f of-the earth altitude (the airspace ex-
tending ‘om the gourd to a few feet above, but generally below the level of the sm'rounding terrain
formations). This provides a relatively high degree of protecon'‘un enemy ground and air acon.
Aircraft are armed with area and point re weapons capable of the demucu’on and suppression of enemy
forces.

é. The air cavalry trooP will operate from one or more assembly areas for
tl'e pulposes of Olganizing for combat; refueling, maintenance, and
supply; and regrouping after an
attack or movement. Duting attack, the combat elements will operate from assembly areas located
well felward in the combat zone, and as close to the enemy pos'tions as terrain and enemy activity will
permit. During periods of combat, the air cavalry troop service elements may operate from the
vicinity
of the squadron trains area to accomplish maintenance of vein'cles and to provide aircraft
supply and
Smeort activities. A high degree of air and ground mobility in the service platoon permits maintenance
and supply operations as far forward in the area of Operations as possible and avoids
lengthy disengagement
by comb at elements.
_1_. Sugrise. The success of combat Operations by air cavalry troops will
depend mainly on the element of surprise attained. This surprise is achieved by ua'ng
speed, maneuver-
ability, and the troop capability to cross terrain obstacles to strike the enemy at an unexpected time and
locau'on, and from an unexpected direction. Surprise can be achieved by well-executed
movements at
low altitude, by using available cover and concealment, speed, aggressiveness, and deception.
_2_. Fire and movement. Air cavalry units use the techniques of re and
movement to destroy the enemy, and for self-protection. Organic weapons, as well as those of ground
elements, must be used to the maximum to provide stppressive fires to protect the movement of aircraft
and reduce their exposure to ground fire. The speed and maneuverability of the air cavalry
elements
enable them to move into unexpected and advantageous positions from which they can be employed to
disrupt, disorganize, and destroy tie enemy. The psychological effect of the concentrated fire of rapidly
advancing armed aircraft should be recognized and exploited.
oriemed on the enemy; in security missiom, it is oriented on the friendly main body. Employment of
the unit in reconnaissance missions is based upon gaining information of the area of operations, finding
the enemy forces, conducting surveillance and reconnaissance of enemy dispositions, reporting the
nature of tie enemy located, acquiring targets, and engaging the enemy within its means as required to
accomplish its am'gned mission. Consideration of the enemy situation will frequently dictate the specific
mission to be assigned, security or reconnaissance, or a combination thereof. Enemy capabilities,
imluding nuclear potential, will affect the employment of these units.
é. Terrain and weather. Terrain has a lesser effect on these units than on
ground forces. The air movement capability of these units negates tie effects of terrain obstacles that
impede the movement of ground elements of the squadron. The primary terrain consideration for air
cavalry units is evaluation and use of air movement routes for nap-of-the-earth ying techniques. Avail-
ability of landing areas should also be considered. Weather is a controlling factor in employment because
high winds, idng conditions, and periods of low visibility may restrict use of these techniques. However,
air activities must be planned to follow up quickly and to exploit these adverse weather conditions.
(g) Oganization for comb at. Organization of the air cavalry troop for combat is
characterized by eadbility, and is such that small tailored teams may be formed and used according
to the mission. In combat, the flexibility of the troop will permit variations in the force organization to
meet changing situations. Elements of the troop may perform independent missions, or elements may be
cross- attached to provide several balanced air teams. The troop may be reinforced by attachment of
air elements from other sources, or it may provide reinforcement or support for ground units.
