Purpose: The purpose of this Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is to establish a

comprehensive and methodical process for conducting destructive testing on sports bags,
specifically team bags and backpacks, to rigorously assess their strength, durability, and
overall quality under extreme conditions. By subjecting bags to rigorous testing, this
procedure aims to ensure that Star Bags maintains exemplary quality standards, delivers
reliable and durable products, and meets or exceeds customer expectations.
2. Scope: This SOP is applicable solely to team bags and backpacks manufactured by Star
Bags. Destructive testing will be conducted on one bag from each lot for Purchase Order
(PO) quantities exceeding 1000.
3. Responsibilities:
o Lab Engineer: The Lab Engineer holds primary responsibility for conducting the
destructive testing, ensuring compliance with testing parameters, recording
precise test results, and meticulously documenting the findings.
o Production Supervisors: The Production Supervisors facilitate the destructive
testing process, ensuring seamless collaboration with the Lab Engineer and timely
provision of the selected bag from the lot.
o Management: Management is accountable for providing essential resources,
including equipment and personnel, to ensure the seamless execution of the
testing procedure while adhering to quality and safety standards.
4. Test Equipment and Setup:
o Universal Testing Machine: A state-of-the-art universal testing machine with
precise controls is employed to apply controlled forces to the bag during testing.
o Weight Loading System: Specialized weights are used to exert accurate pressure
on the bag's straps or handles, meticulously simulating real-world loading
scenarios.
o Environmental Chamber (Optional): An advanced environmental chamber may be
utilized to subject bags to extreme temperature and humidity conditions, enabling
assessment of material performance under diverse climatic scenarios.
5. Test Parameters and Reference Standards:

5.1 Load Test:

o Purpose: To evaluate the bag's weight-carrying capacity and resistance to tearing

or breaking under pressure.
o Test Standard: ISO 13934-1:1999 - Textiles - Tensile properties of fabrics - Part
1: Determination of maximum force and elongation at maximum force using the
strip method.

5.2 Handle Jerk Test:

o Purpose: To assess the strength and durability of the bag's handles when subjected
to sudden jerking motions.
o Test Standard: Star Bags Internal Test Method (Based on Industry Best Practices).

5.3 Shoulder Jerk Test:

o Purpose: To evaluate the bag's shoulder straps' endurance and resistance to sudden
pulling forces.
o Test Standard: Star Bags Internal Test Method (Based on Industry Best Practices).

5.4 Tensile Tests:

o Purpose: To measure the bag's material strength and resistance to stretching or

elongation.
o Test Standard: ASTM D5034-09(2015) - Standard Test Method for Breaking
Strength and Elongation of Textile Fabrics (Grab Test).

5.5 Zipper Test (Applicable for Backpacks):

o Purpose: To assess the tensile strength and functionality of the backpack's zippers
under load.
o Test Standard: ISO 13936-1:2016 - Textiles - Seam tensile properties of fabrics
and made-up textile articles - Part 1: Determination of maximum force to seam
rupture using the grab method.
6. Test Procedure:

Step 1: Selection of Bag

o The Lab Engineer randomly selects one bag from the lot for destructive testing.
The chosen bag should epitomize the overall quality and design of the entire lot.

Step 2: Load Test

o The bag is securely affixed to the universal testing machine, ensuring its natural
position during load application.
o The bag's main compartment is filled with weights to attain a predefined load
level, meticulously simulating maximum weight capacity.
o The load is gradually applied until reaching the specified level, meticulously
assessing the bag's performance under pressure.

Step 3: Handle Jerk Test

o The bag's handles are subjected to sudden jerking motions to closely simulate
real-world usage scenarios.
o The Lab Engineer scrupulously assesses handle integrity and attachment points,
meticulously documenting any indications of damage or failure.

Step 4: Shoulder Jerk Test

o The bag's shoulder straps are subjected to sudden pulling forces, thoroughly
evaluating their endurance and resistance to wear.
o The Lab Engineer diligently inspects the shoulder straps, meticulously recording
any signs of stretching, tearing, or damage.

Step 5: Tensile Tests

o Material samples are meticulously extracted from the bag for the tensile tests.
o The samples are meticulously clamped in the universal testing machine, and force
is meticulously applied until material failure occurs.
o The Lab Engineer meticulously records the maximum force and elongation at
maximum force in alignment with ASTM D5034-09(2015).

Step 6: Zipper Test (Applicable for Backpacks)

o The zippers on the backpack's main compartment and additional pockets undergo
meticulous testing for tensile strength and functionality.
o Each zipper is securely affixed to the testing machine, meticulously applying
controlled force to assess resistance to pulling and sliding.

Step 7: Environmental Testing (Optional)

o If environmental chamber testing is deemed necessary, the bag is placed inside

the chamber, meticulously subjecting it to extreme temperature and humidity
conditions for a specified duration.
o Environmental testing meticulously assesses the bag's resistance to adverse
climatic conditions and potential material degradation.

Step 8: Inspection and Record Keeping

o The Lab Engineer meticulously inspects the bag after each test, scrutinizing for
any signs of damage, failure, or deformation.
o The test results, including load capacity, handle jerk test outcomes, shoulder jerk
test outcomes, tensile test results, zipper test results (if applicable), and any
observed defects, are meticulously documented in detail.

Step 9: Non-Conformance Handling

oIf the tested bag passes all destructive tests without significant defects or failure, it
is considered acceptable for use and representative of the entire lot.
o In the event of bag failure or excessive defects, the non-conformance handling
procedure is meticulously initiated, prompting further inspection, corrective
action, or rejection.
7. Documentation:
o The Lab Engineer meticulously creates and maintains comprehensive records of
the destructive testing process, encompassing test parameters, procedures, results,
and any non-conforming outcomes.
o All testing documents are securely stored, ensuring meticulous accessibility for
future reference, auditing, and quality assurance purposes.
8. Last Generated List:
o The "Last Generated List" is meticulously updated after each destructive testing,
encompassing essential details such as the PO number, destructive test date, lot
size, test results, and meticulously specific notes or observations pertaining to the
tested bag.

Through this meticulously crafted and refined Bag Destructive Testing Procedure, Star Bags
exemplifies its commitment to meticulous quality control, product durability, and customer
satisfaction. The incorporation of reference standards further validates the testing process and
ensures meticulous compliance with international quality norms and industry best practices. The
Lab Engineer plays a crucial role in conducting the testing with precision and accuracy, ensuring
reliable and meaningful test results.
