Chapter 1:Modern farming methods in India.

1. Aeroponics
Aeroponics is a method of growing plants without the use of soil in an air
or mist environment. It is a subtype of hydroponics that works by
suspending the plant root in the air. Farmers will have more control over the
amount of water they consume if they utilize this strategy.

6|P ag e
2. Hydroponics
The hydroponics method of farming uses less soil and does not require any
form of soil. The process requires growing healthy plants without the use of
solid media, employing nutrients such as a mineral-rich water solution.
Hydroponic farming is a subset of hydroculture, and the nutrients employed
in these systems come from a variety of places.

7|P ag e
3. Monoculture
This approach requires the cultivation of a single crop in a specified farming
region. In a country like India, however, the Monoculture farming approach
isn't extensively used. Monoculture refers to indoor farming, such as the
cultivation of therapeutic plants. Monoculture is a modern agricultural
approach in which only one crop or plant is produced.

Hydroponics Systems Installation

From Shopping Malls to Big Corporate Houses and from Premium Clubs to
Hotel Chains, Hydroponics is trusted by clients of all sizes and types to
install Different kinds of hydroponics systems at their spaces.

Here’s a quick lowdown of the various types of hydroponics systems:

Types of Hydroponics Systems

1. Flat Bed NFT System
2. A Frame NFT System
3. Dutch Bucket System
4. Grow Bags System
5. DWC (Deep Water Culture) System
6. Vertigo Towers System

9|P ag e
Flat Bed NFT System

In a Flat Bed NFT Hydroponics system, plants are lined up on horizontal

layers. Tube like channel holds the plants in small net pots.

And the roots are suspended at the bottom of the net pots, so that right in
the tube itself, water solution passes through it and the roots also get
exposed to air for gaining adequate oxygen.

10 | P a g e
A Frame NFT System

This setup is in the shape of English alphabet “A”. Here, the water flows in
a single direction from the top level and then to the next levels below each
of them.

This ensures nutrient rich water is easily supplied to all the plants that are
part of this A-Frame. A-Frame is preferred for its Excellent Aeration and
Optimal use of space as well as water.

11 | P a g e
Dutch Bucket System

Also known as Bato Bucket System, Dutch Bucket uses buckets as a

growing medium for the hydroponics crops. These buckets are filled with
materials like coco peat, clay balls, etc. that hold the roots and provide good
aeration. In this system, nutrient solutions are mixed with the water which
is then supplied to the roots by drippers.

It also gives you this freedom of setting a timer for supplying the required
amount of nutrient rich water at fixed intervals.

12 | P a g e
Grow Bags System

Grow Bags are filled with soil medium like coco peat slabs. As per the
customer requirements, Hydroponics sets up grow bags that are available
in different sizes and volumes.

Best part is, they give enough room for the roots to expand further. Grow
Bags have been found to be suitable for growing tomatoes, strawberries,
lettuce, etc. on hydroponics farms.

13 | P a g e
14 | P a g e
DWC (Deep Water Culture) System

Here, the roots of plants are sunk in water so that they gain adequate amount
of nutrients.

And for oxygenation, air pumps and air stones are added to the water
reservoir. With DWC method, plants grow real fast and big in size.

15 | P a g e
Vertigo Towers System

Also called as Tower Garden System, here plants are vertically grown on
cylindrical shaped tall towers. Vertigo Towers have proven to be very good
for growing leafy vegetables, herbs and shrubs.

In these towers, a small pump supplies water by dripping, irrigating and

recirculation. Drippers carry a nutrient and mineral rich water solution over
the roots and plants. Here too you can fully control the time intervals of
water supply.

What are the Advantages of Hydroponics

The best way to get an idea on the advantage of hydroponics is by showing it ’s

comparison with soil based farming.

A.) Bigger Size:

It’s because the vegetables and fruits grown by hydroponics, spend a good amount of
time growing upwards than growing deep extensive root systems .

B.) Faster Growth:

Hydroponics helps the plants to mature upto 25% faster than the plants grown in soil.

C.) Healthy & Pure:

As these hydroponics plants are grown in a Controlled Environment, there ’s absolutely
no need for any kind of chemical, pesticide or fertilizer. That’s why the veggies and
herbs grown by Hydroponics are healthier and tastier.

D.) Higher Output:

With more and more novel designs of hydroponics systems coming up in the markets,
the output gained from a hydroponics setup far exceeds the output gained from
traditional soil based farming.

E.) Water Conservation:

The nutrient and oxygen rich water is constantly recirculated into the piping systems,
where the roots get fed with all they need for their growth. Plus, there’s very less
evaporation because of a controlled environment where the hydroponics setups are
taken care of.

F.) Helps Utilise Space:

With a drastic change in temperature and its impact on growing conditions of the soil,
hydroponics farming has come up as the best answer to utilise those spaces by putting
them to good use. Barren lands, places with cold weather, desert, you name it and there
you have a successful hydroponics system ready to serve you with nutritious leafy
greens, herbs, veggies and fruits.
G.) Round the Year Output:
Hydroponics has surpassed the limitations posed by seasons, that otherwise allow for
harvesting of only season based crops . But with hydroponics we can grow a huge
variety of crops at all times of the year.
