Lesson 9

Issues and Challenges of Emerging Literature

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

a. analyze how emerging literature reflects the issues and
challenges of its time;
b. develop an appreciation for the dynamic nature of emergent
literature as a unique form of expression in the contemporary literary
landscape; and
c. apply analytical skills to physically engage with emergent literature,
demonstrating an ability to discuss unconventional techniques like
pictures/images and comic book formats in a detailed and articulate
manner.

 Emergent Literature - Emergent Literature is a contemporary body of texts that

is gaining momentum in the global literary landscape. It breaks the traditional
way of writing and uses unconventional techniques (pictures/ images, comic book
format).

 8 Issues and Challenges of Emerging Literature

1. Literature consumption is not the same as it was before.

- People no longer read books in the same way that they read them
before. Instead, we’ve adapted to reading blogs, and social media
feeds, quickly browsing listings, and watching videos.

Example:

Instagram poetry, such as the works of Rupi Kaur, is

consumed in bite-sized, visually appealing formats, catering to the
preferences of readers in the digital age.

2. Too many “writers”

- Today, everyone who has learned to quickly tap their fingers on the
keyboard can easily think of themselves as a writer. The thing is that
technology has disrupted everything in such a way that there are no
longer strict rules of entry into the literary world.

Issues and Challenges of
LESSON 9 Emerging Literature
Example:

Self-published e-books on platforms like Amazon Kindle,

where aspiring writers can easily publish their works without
traditional gatekeepers.

3. Too Much Reused and Copied Ideas.

- Taking into account the amount of information that is produced and

reproduced on the internet daily, it is really hard to come up with
something new. If 100 years ago the authors had great scope for
creativity and imagination, today one can argue that we've already
covered everything and published books on all possible topics and
genres.

Example:

The rise of fan fiction communities where writers create

stories based on existing characters or universes highlights the
challenge of generating entirely new ideas.

4. Some types of emergent literature are dismissed as “inferior literature”.

- Graphic novels in any form were generally dismissed as inferior

literature “not proper reading” People say that the style of graphic
novels, such as comic books or manga, cannot be counted as
literature, as they are just art.

Example:

"Maus" by Art Spiegelman, which faced initial skepticism as

a graphic novel but later gained recognition for its powerful
storytelling about the Holocaust.

5. Mass media.

- There is much more to do in our free time than reading, most of

which is easier than reading. Reading is a task that requires time and
effort (usually); you can’t pitch convenience or speed to someone
when discussing literature.

Example:

The decline in long-form journalism and the rise of listicles

and clickbait articles on online platforms, reflecting a shift towards
shorter, easily consumable content.

6. Usage of Vernacular and Colloquial words.

Issues and Challenges of
LESSON 9 Emerging Literature
- Colloquial language is used in informal writing and creates a
conversational tone. Everyday spoken language gives your writing
a casual, relaxed effect.

Example:

"Conversations with Friends" by Sally Rooney, known for

its colloquial and conversational writing style, capturing the way
people speak in everyday life.

7. Barriers to publication entry have crashed.

- Enabling a huge trend of sub-literary and/or nonliterary textual

expression. Most Emerging Literature in the past years hasn't been
very inclusive to people who are older and of age as Emerging
Literature is very up to date with current cultures and what teens are
interested in which most older people aren't privy to.

Example:

The prevalence of web novels or online serialized fiction,

where writers can share their work with a global audience without
traditional publishing constraints.

8. Unstable computer, Internet, and cellphone.

- Interfaces have become the world's primary means of cultural access.

Compositor systems remake media in their hybrid Creole image.

Example:

The popularity of interactive storytelling apps like Episode or

Wattpad, where users engage with stories on their smartphones,
showcasing the shift towards digital interfaces as cultural access
points.
