III. Read carefully the extracts given below and answer the questions
that follow:

1. But Holmes’ attention was not on our prisoner. He was examining the bust
of Napoleon the prisoner had stolen out of the house. Just then the door
opened and a figure called out: ‘Mr. Sherlock Holmes?’

a. Who is the ‘figure’ referred to? Where did he live? (1)


b. Who was the ‘prisoner’? What do you know about him? (2)
c. What did the ‘figure’ offer to Holmes and his friends? Why did they refuse

2. But now, a change came over my brother. He became much gentler. Perhaps
