Othello

Act 5 scene 1
Iago has a soliloquy after he’s instigated and made Rodrigo angry and ready to fight
Cassio and is saying how he can’t let Rodrigo survive because If Roderigo survives,
though, he’ll ask Iago for all the gold and jewelry that he stole from him and said he gave
to Desdemona. -
“Live Roderigo, He calls me to a restitution large of gold and jewels that I bobbed
from him as gifts to Desdemona.”

At the same time, he’s also says that he can’t let Cassio survive because Cassio will make
Iago look bad because of how well-spoken he is-
“He hath a daily beauty in his life That makes me ugly.”

After Cassio stabs Roderigo I think he starts coming back to his sense and shouting for
help
Iago appears and acts as if he doesn’t know anything that’s happened and accuses
Roderigo of being a murderer and a villain he also stabs Roderigo
Gratiano and Lodovico are also here and help with both of the wounded men

He’s also questioning Bianca and tells Emilia to go tell Othello and Desdemona about
what has happened
“This is the night That either makes me or fordoes me quite.”

Act 5 scene 2
Othello is speaking to Desdemona who’s asleep basically saying how he has to kill her
but he won’t shed any of her blood of scar her skin
When she wakes up he’s telling her confess all her sins cause he doesn’t want to kill her
and send her to hell
Desdemona is confused by this and saying how she doesn’t know why she should be
afraid when she hasn’t done anything wrong

Othello tells her about the hanker chief found with Cassio and she continues to express
her innocence but Othello keeps insisting and says nothing will change his mind she’s
still going to die
As they keep going back and forth with each other Othello’s anger starts to rise
Desdemona begs Othello to at least kill her tomorrow but Othello refuses and smothers
her

After Othello thinks he’s killed Desdemona Emilia comes to his door is desperately trying
to get Othello to come out and speak to her
When Othello lets her in she tells him that Cassio has killed Roderigo
Othello seems shocked or annoyed that Cassio wasn’t also killed cause that wasn’t a
part of his revenge plan

Out of nowhere Desdemona speaks out loud from behind the curtains saying she was
killed unfairly Emilia hears this opens the curtains and franticly ask her what happened
and Desdemona says it’s all cause of her own decisions no one did it and then dies

Othello is then acting as if nothing has happened and to Emilia he says she said it wasn’t
him so could’ve murdered her

Othello confesses to Emilia and tries to explain why he did it

“Thou dost belie her, and thou art a devil.” When Emelia says this l think she’s saying
how he gave a false impression of her and didn’t even believe his own wife and that he’s
a devil for slandering and innocent woman

Othello tells Emilia that her husband is the one who give him the information about
Desdemona’s infidelity
Emilia is mad because she knows Iago is not as honest as Othello makes him out to be
and even when Othello is threatening her she is unfazed and says she doesn’t care and
that she’s going to tell everyone the truth of what happened

Montano Gratiano and Iago enter to find out why Emilia is screaming and Emilia ask Iago
why he would tell Othello Desdemona cheated on her and Iago just says I told him what
he thought

Emilia reveals that Iago is the one who made her give him the hanker chief because he’d
been asking for it so many times without giving her a reason as to why he needed it
During all this Iago is trying to make her stop talking and when she finally tells the truth
Othello runs towards Iago in anger trying to kill him and Iago runs to Emilia and stabs
her and then leaves
Emilia dies next to Desdemona while still expressing her innocence to Othello
Othello is only noticing now that he’s killed someone who has done nothing wrong and
saying how he deserves all bad things to happen to him

Lodovico and Montano return with Cassio and Iago

Othello tells Iago he’s the devils incarnate and that he cannot kill him if he truly is the
devil then proceeds to stab Iago

Lodovico then tells Othello about the letters found in Roderigo’s back pocket one of
them being a plot to kill Cassio and the second one is addressed to Iago threatening to
expose him

Cassio then explains how he got the hanker chief

Lodovico then announces his arrest but Othello tells them if they’re going to tell his
story they should tell it as it is and then stabs himself dies next to Desdemona
After Othello dies he tells Iago how cruel of a person he is and that everything’s that’s
happened is because him and then tells Cassio to decide what his punishment should be
and gives all of Othello’s possessions to Gratiano

How does Iago perceive Desdemona?

Iago being the character who strongly shows his perception that woman are
promiscuous. When him and Roderigo are talking he brings up that even if she’s young
and looks innocent she’s just like every other woman

RODERIGO I cannot believe that in her. She’s full of most blessed condition.

IAGO Blessed fig’s-end! The wine she drinks is made of grapes. If she had been blessed,
she would never have loved the Moor.

Things that portray Iago as a victim

Having the title lieutenant given to Cassio over him simply because of his place in the
society could be one way Iago can be seen as a victim of societies standards this is when
the jealousy starts and he feels mistreated as he’s been one of Othello’s valued friend
for long. Iago is also a creation of his environment and during the whole play Iago is
being shown in a bad light but he’s just driven by the feeling of betrayal which make
have hatred and angry

Iago’s First Soliloquy

This is the first time we see Iago’s true intentions. He plans on using Roderigo for his
money when he tells Roderigo about winning Desdemona’s heart back it’s just another
way to get more money put of him. He also says the reason he hates Othello is be cause
he thinks Othello has slept with his wife and even though he doesn’t have proof he’s
going to plot a revenge plan. He says Othello sees him as a very trustworthy and honest
person so that’s why his plan is going to work well. He will tell Othello that Cassio has
slept with Desdemona because he is young this story will be more believable.

“Thus do I ever make my fool my purse”.

We learn by this line that he manipulates people who have money. I think that
everything Iago has told Rodrigo about winning Desdemona’s heart back is just a way to
get more money from him

“I hate the moor and it is thought abroad that ‘twixt my sheets he’s done my office”
He hates Othello because he thinks he’s slept with his wife Emilia

“I know not if ’t be true, But I, for mere suspicion in that kind, Will do as if for surety.”
He’s going to plot revenge for this even though he has no proof

“He holds me well. The better shall my purpose work on him”

He knows since Othello sees him as a trustworthy and honest person his revenge plan
will work well

“After some time, to abuse Othello’s ear That he is too familiar with his wife. He hath
a person and a smooth dispose To be suspected, framed to make women false.”
In his plan Iago is going to tell Othello that Cassio has had sex with Desdemona and it
will be easier to believe because Cassio is young

“And will as tenderly be led by th' nose As asses are.”

Saying Othello sees things for face value and is easily manipulated comparing him to
donkeys
Iago’s Second Soliloquy
He talks about how he is suffering from the jeaoulsy of sleeping with his wife and how
he could get revenge by making Othello as jealous as he is by sleeping with Desdemona.
When he says he love Desdemona he is saying his plan to sleep with her to get revenge
on Othello is not all about getting revenge he also has some lust for her and he wants
Othello to feels the same amount of jealous as him which will lead him to madness. He’s
going to convince Othello Cassio isn’t a good person because he suspects he has slept
with his wife too.

“I do love her too, Not out of absolute lust—though peradventure I stand accountant
for as great a sin—But partly led to diet my revenge,”
he is saying his plan to sleep with her to get revenge on Othello is not all about getting
revenge he also has some lust for her

“And nothing can or shall content my soul Till I am evened with him, wife for wife.”
He won’t stop until he has gotten his revenge by sleeping with Desdemona

“I put the Moor At least into a jealousy so strong That judgment cannot cure.”

“I’ll have our Michael Cassio on the hip, Abuse him to the Moor in the right garb
(For I fear Cassio with my night-cape too)”
He’s going to says bad thing about Cassio to Othello because he suspects Cassio has
slept with his wife too
