Scene 1

Kid: Daddy, I’m bored, can you tell me a story?

Fadhil: Come here, son. It’s about time I told you all about your mother.

Kid: Yay, story time!

Fadhil: It all started when I was still a little kid, just like you! Your mother and I were
childhood friends. I have always loved you mother. But it all started on that day. Ever
since I was a little kid, I had a curved spine. This means I was fitted with leg bracers. It
wasn’t easy back in the days. I’ve always gotten bullied by others. They would call me by
names like “degenerate” or even <bad names> sometimes. In some cases, they would
even beat me up! But that day, me and your mother were taking a walk in the park.

*Flashback*

Fadhil: Such good weather we have here today, it’s not too hot, not too cold.

Jessica: Yea, seems like it was a good idea to come to the park.

Fadhil: You know, I have made a bet with my father that I will be passing my exams with flying
colors. He doesn’t trust that I can do it, but I’m very sure that I will.

Jessica: Really?! You have been failing your exams ever since you got into school. Are you
sure that you can do it this time?

Fadhil: Yes! I’m very sure of it. I have studied for these coming exams since last month. So,
I’m sure that I can do it. Don’t tell me that you don’t trust me.

Jessica: That’s what you say everyt….

Bully 1: Oh look! It’s the degenerate Jessica!

Bully 2: What are you doing with this degenerate right here, Jessica!

[Bully 1 laugh]

Jessica: Stop it. It’s not like he wanted to be like this!

Bully 1: He should just stay at home with those legs of his. Can he even walk properly?!

Bully 2: Yea! Just stay home you freak!

Jessica: You guys are the freaks for saying all those means things about Fadhil!
[Bully 1 pushes Jessica away.]

Bully 1: Look Jessica, this is none of your business here.

Fadhil: Looking at those guys pushing her away, I got mad and recalled something that
my father said.

*Flashback*

Father: Fadhil, when a man loves a woman, everything about her becomes his priority.
Whoever harms or attempts to will have to contend with him. It is a man’s responsibility to
protect who he loves.

*Flashback ends*

Fadhil: Remembering what my father told me, I’ve pulled your mother back away from
those guys.

Fadhil: That’s no way to speak to a lady.

Bully 1: Back off, freak!

Bully 2 pushed Fadhil and he fell. Jessica helped Fadhil up.

Jessica: Are you okay, Fadhil? I’ll help you up.

[Bully 2 attempts to push Fadhil again.]

Jessica: Run! Get away from them!

Fadhil: In my mind, I really didn’t want to run. But knowing my disability, I had no choice.

Fadhil starts running away from the bullies.

Bully 2: Come back here! You freak!

[Bully 1 and 2 starts picking up pebbles and throw it at Fadhil. Jessica tries to block them with
her arms open wide.]

Jessica: Stop it you two! I’m going to tell your parents about this if you don’t stop!

[Bully 1 and 2 didn’t stop and continue throwing pebbles at Fadhil.]

Jessica: Run, Fadhil, run!

Fadhil: Due to my leg bracers, I couldn’t run fast, but by hearing the encouragement
from your mother, I started picking up the speed. As I was running, my leg bracers
slowly broke off. It was at that moment that I knew that I finally recovered from my
curved spine, and I don’t need the leg bracers anymore. I kept on running and running
all around the park. I felt like a caged bird finally let free.

*Flashback ends

Kid: Wow, daddy! You never told me any of these! I would really love to hear more
stories about you and mummy!

Fadhil: Sure, son! I will tell you all about it when we have the time. But daddy has
to return to work now, so be a good boy and do your homework first.

Kid: Alright, daddy!

Scene 2

Narrator: A caring father, Fadhil spends most of his time with his son. They eat, study and hide
together during hide-and-seek games, Even though one needs to be a seeker. Its 5 p.m. in the
evening,Fadhil and his son are sitting in front of their house after playing badminton together in
front of their home.

Kid : Daddy

Fadhil : Son

Kid : You have not told me about your days when you and mommy were in college!

Fadhil : Haven’t I?

Kid : [ nodding his head ]

Narrator : Wait ? He attend college?

Fadhil : Well , college sure is most of the confusing time of my life, kiddo. The lecturers taught
mathematics other than add and subtract. On weekends, you’ll be playing rugby in front of
people. You’ll meet new friends. Daddy has met new friends. Black friends. White friends.
Yellow friends. Friends with turbans. And friends who like to shout.

Kid : Have you met friends with 3 legs ?

Fadhil : I have friends with one eye.

Kid : Like Mike Wazowski?

Fadhil : Like Mike Wazowski.

Kid : College sure is fun !

[Flashback]

The scene’s background turns to college scenery . Jessica walks out of a lecturer’s room. Her
face looks worried. She walks slowly while looking at the beautiful scenery of the college’s
landscape.

Jessica : Hmmm, 4 failed courses. Should have taken that barmaid at Wendy’s bar……

Narrator :[Fadhil catches up to Jessica and walks beside her.]

Fadhil : Jessica, look. I got a 4 GPA again! If mom saw this, she’ll smile a lot!

Jessica : Good to hear Dhil….

Fadhil : Why the long face Jess? Did something happen ? I have candy that I found in a café.
Mom said We shouldn't waste food.

Jesicca : No Dhil . [ Starts to get irritated ] I failed 4 courses in pre exams. If I fail again, I can't
continue next semester. I don’t have much money to retake exams. I think I should quit.

Fadhil : [Shouting] No you can’t quit Jessica !

Jessica : [ Covering her ears. Calming herself as she starts to get mad]

Fadhil : I..I …I can help you with your study.

Jessica :………

Fadhil : We’ll never know if we don’t try. I’ll make a better teacher than prof albert.

Jessica : [Smiles] Let's start tomorrow.

Fadhil : Sure can do Jessica!

Narrator: Both of them work really hard on studying for their exams. They study day and night
non-stop while others are sleeping. They encounter lots of problems during their study but keep
going nevertheless. The day of the exams has finally come. Jessica is not confident, but faith
makes her stand tall. With a deep sigh, she walks to the examination hall with her head held
high.

Some days have passed. The examination result came out. She passed her examination. All
her hard work had paid off. Fadhil and Jessica are walking in the garden while they talk about
their exam’s result.

Jessica : I can't believe I passed all the courses.

Fadhil : See? You’re a natural Jess!

Jessica : ( Jessica starts to cough)

Fadhil : What's wrong Jess. Are you ok?

Jessica I’m a little bit dizzy but I’m ok. Anyway thank you Fadhil. You are always there for me.

Fadhil : Don’t mention it, Jessica. I’ll do anything for my girl. I love you Jessica.

Jessica : Owwhhh Dhil…

Narrator : As they laugh during their walk. They encounter bullies who are bullying a student.
The bullies are pushing the student on a tree while others are laughing at him.
Jessica : Ohh no not again…. Poor kid…

Fadhil : Why are they bullying him, Jessica ?

Jessica : I don’t even know Fadhil. Life is unfair to others

Fadhil : Should we stop?

Jessica : no we’re not

Fadhil : I think he needs help Jessica

Jessica : We don’t need to interfere with other people’s lives, Fadhil . We should focus on
ourselves. I think we should… No ! … Fadhil, don’t!

Narrator: The bullies start to kick the student while he’s laying on the ground. Fadhil approached
them.

Bully 1 : Eat this you stupid indigenous! The likes of you shouldn’t be here. [2 bullies who were
laughing start kicking to]

Fadhil : Stop!

Bully 2 : Who the heck are you?

Fadhil : My name is Fadhil Gazali. I think you folks shouldn’t be bullying him.

Badrul: Please help me, Fadhil!

Bully 2 : It’s none of your business. Get the hell outta here!

Fadhil : Your parents work really hard to put you in college. It will surely break their heart
knowing that their son is bullying someone.

Narrator: The bullies stop kicking Badrul. All of them started turning to Fadhil.

Bully 1 : Tell me. Are you trying to act tough?

Fadhil : No, if I’m tough I should be joining the army. They need tough men.

[ Bullies looking at each other]

Bully 2 : Are you plain stupid?

Fadhil : I’m stupid as stupid does. But I got a 3.8 GPA for last semester. It’s ain't much but it’s
honest work.

[ Bullies laugh with each other]

Bully 2 : Well, well ,well. Looks like we got a nerd whose stupid… at the same time. This must
be God's finest accident.

Narrator :Fadhil helps Badrul up while the bullies were talking bad about him.

Fadhil: Here, I’ll help you up.

Badrul: Thank you, Fadhil!

Narrator: Bully 1 tries to push Fadhil, but Fadhil didn’t even budge.

Bully 1: Yo tough guy, you better stay out of this.

Narrator : The bully lifts his fist, wanting to punch Fadhil and Badrul. As Jessica saw that
happen, she yelled.

Jessica: Fadhil, look out! Run, Fadhil, run!

Narrator : Fadhil pulls Badrul and runs away. The bullies started chasing them.

Bully 1: Come back here!

Fadhil: What is your name, by the way?

Badrul: Badrul, Badrul Yellow.

Fadhil: Nice knowing you Badrul, I’m Fadhil.

Badrul: How are we going to escape them though?

Fadhil: To be honest, I don't really know.

Fadhil: As we were running away across the field, we caught the attention of the rugby coach of
our college. He stopped us from running. When the bullies saw that the coach was there, they
turned and ran away. He saw the potential in both of us and invited us into the rugby team. Ever
since that day, we played rugby for our college and no one would bully us anymore. We had
some good seasons back in our days, even winning some competitions.

Kid : You play for the Eagles in Malaysia Rugby League ?

Fadhil : Yeah son. But Daddy still didn’t get the rules. But all daddy knows that you just need to
run until they tell you to stop.

Kid : Awesome !
Fadhil : We won every single match. They say daddy helps a lot so they told daddy not to pay
for college tuition.

Kid : I can't wait to grow up!

Fadhil: That college stuff was decent. After 4 years of studying , they gave me a scroll. But
mom sure was happy. A guy in black suit told me that I can be a professional rugby player in
some country called Australia, but another guy in a green uniform came up to me and gave me
a brochure about the army and stuff. Badrul and I took a liking to the brochure, and so we
decided to hit them up and joined the army together. In our days in the army, we met some
good friends, like your Uncle Danish. That’s all I have for you today, son. It’s time for us to get
some rest and get some dinner.

Kid: Okay then, daddy. Let’s get some McDonalds for dinner please.

Fadhil: Anything for you, son.

Kid: Thanks daddy!

Narrator: Looks like Fadhil had the time of his life during his college days. See? you don't have to
be smart to be in college, you just need to be a hardworking idiot... and fast.
SCENE 3

Narrator:After calling the numbers on the Brochure, Fadhil and Badrul are in the military in
a blink of an eye, they run, crawl, and learn how to disassemble and assemble a rifle and
shoot a moving target from 200 meters as they got employed in a mission that could get
themselves killed while the drill sergeant yelling at them. No big deal for a simple-minded
man.

8 month has passed, and both of them are on a mission on the border of Malaysia-
Thailand. Fadhil and Badrul were having a conversation while they rest during a mission.

Badrul Yellow: Hey Fadhil, I think we can open a business together!

Fadhil: What kind of business? Are you serious? We are still in our mission Badrul.

Badrul Yellow: Not now! I mean after we were released from our services.

Fadhil: I see, so what kind of business are we going to do? Selling clothes? Setting up a new
aircraft service?

Badrul Yellow: We can operate a squid boat! I have many experiences and I think we can bring
Lieutenant Danish together!

Lieutenant Danish: Are you sure about this? It is way too dangerous. What if we were drowned
by the sea?

Badrul Yellow: Our mission is way more dangerous, lieutenant. Come on!

Fadhil: I do agree with you Badrul. I am interested in that!

Badrul Yellow: With squid, you can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, and sauté it! There is a
squid kebab, squid creole, and squid gumbo. Pan-fried, deep-fried, stir-fried. There is pineapple
squid, lemon squid, coconut squid, pepper squid, squid soup, squid stew, squid salad and
potatoes and….

*Fadhil interrupting him talking about squid*

Fadhil: Wow that’s a lot! I am way more than interested! We could eat as many squid as we
wanted!

Badrul Yellow: They didn’t call squid as sea potato for no reason. What do you say, want to be
a partner in business? I will teach you how to start one.

Narrator : A squid business? Yummy!

Fadhil: I don’t know, Fadhil. I’m scared of the ocean. There is a big octopus with big tentacles
that could eat your whole ship without problems. And then, there was also a giant lizard that
could breathe nuclear energy there. I never liked lizards, plus the one that can pulverize me.

Lieutenant Danish: Wait, wait, wait, what do you mean by that?

Fadhil: What do I mean by what?

Lieutenant Danish: Those giant squid and nuclear lizard things. Where do you get an idea of
that
Fadhil: You never watched TV huh, Lieutenant? Those creatures are always shown on screen.
They filmed them attacking navy vessels and ate those poor peoples alive. I always get scared
watching those footage. One time, I even had to hide behind Jessica because the lizard stared
straight to my eyes like I’m its next dinner. I don’t know what happened to the cameraman
though. But Jessica always said that cameramen never die, so I guess he survived both lizard
and squid attacks.

Lieutenant Danish: Are you being serious, or…. Let me get this straight, Fadhil. I don’t want to
break those last two brain cells of yours. Those creatures that you saw on TV are not real.
Those are fictional things that they create for movies.

Fadhil: So, they are not real? Do those creatures on TV never exist?

Lieutenant Danish: Yes, there are not.

Fadhil: Yikes, I have been deceived. I have been fooled by those fictitious shows.

Lieutenant Danish: Yeah, you get it now?

Fadhil: Yeah, thank you, Lieutenant. I won’t be afraid of the ocean again. Never though, those
on TV aren’t real. They even faked Celine Dion.

Lieutenant Danish: Those are real.

Fadhil: But you said what’s on TV is not real. But now you said it’s real. You are hurting my
brain, Lieutenant.

Lieutenant Danish: Just forget about our conversation. RIP to those dead brain cells. You
know what else will die, all of us if we continue chit-chatting like this while on a mission. Now
pack your things, we are moving to the denser part of the forest.

Fadhil & Badrul: Yes sir.

Narrator : As they are having a chit-chat. Suddenly, a group of enemies ambushed them .They
got fired with thousand of bullets. Killing most of their comrade.

Fadhil: Multiple enemies at 2 o’clock!

Lieutenant Danish: Splash them, Fadhil watches our back, Badrul hands me those magazines.
All the others keep firing, making every bullet count.

Badrul: Their numbers keep increasing, sir. I don’t know how much longer we can hold them.

Lieutenant Danish: Freaking hell, they got my leg. Fadhil, contacts air support, our grid is
TANGO 4.

Fadhil: Copy, sir. This is company seven, we need air backup at TANGO 4. Enemies number
around forty…Yes…Copy that. Command center said air support isn’t available in this grid. We
need to move to SIERRA 4 for them to pick us up.
Lieutenant Danish: Alright, everybody retreats to the north. We will hold the enemies until air
support arrives.

Fadhil: Copy that. Come on Badrul. Why are you just standing there, we need to move.

Badrul: We have a situation here. I think I stepped on a landmine. I heard a clicking under my
boot.

Fadhil: You must be kidding me. Oh no, you guys move first, I will try to cover Badrul. Request
for anti-bomb squad.

Lieutenant Danish: There’s no time for that, we need that, we need to move right now or all of
us will die.

Badrul: Lieutenant is right Badrul. There is no time for emotion here. Fadhil you help
Lieutenant to escape. You guys go for the grid, I will try my best to distract the enemy.

Fadhil: But there's some way too….

Badrul: No Fadhil, just run and live your best life for me.

Fadhil: I just can’t leave…

Badrul: Run, Fadhil, run!

Fadhil: And that was the last time I saw Badrul. After the battle ended, I was honorably
discharged from my service. They amputate Lieutenant’s right leg. The shrapnel severely
injured him. I tried to find him in every possible way but still no luck for me. One day, I received
a letter from Badrul’s mom thanking me for being Badrul’s friend until the end. I guess Badrul
really died in that battle.

Fadhil: Three years since I left the military. I always visited Jessica’s in hospital, her cancer
getting worse every day. She always said she can handle all the problems by herself, but her
conditions said otherwise. I used some of my money from my military to pay her medical
expenses. That’s one of the ways I can help Jessica since she is the first friend that I ever have,
and I don’t want to lose any more friends I know. Then, one day while I was walking through the
hospital aisle…

Lieutenant Danish: Fadhil, is that you?

Fadhil: Lieutenant Danish? It’s really you. How are you these days? Didn’t hear anything from
you since we warded together last year.

Lieutenant Danish: You can cut the lieutenant part. You can call me Danish now. We are not in
the military anymore. All good, probably better if I didn’t lose my leg. Getting a job with only one
leg is really hard these days.
Fadhil: Oh, sorry to hear that.

Lieutenant Danish: No need to be sorry. Plus, I never had a chance to say thank you to you
for saving my life. I really appreciate what you did back there. If only I had a way to pay back to
you.

Fadhil: No problem. I only did what I could. It would be better if I could save Badrul back there,
but life must go on for us.

Lieutenant Danish: You have become wiser over these years, eh. Badrul is a good guy. I’m
sure he is smiling above there. Wait…do you remember the conversation we had with Badrul in
the past?

Fadhil: About what?

Lieutenant Danish: About the squid business. Maybe both of us can create our own squid
company. How much compensation do you get from your leave?

Fadhil: Around RM300,000. I’ve used some of it for Jessica’s cancer treatment. The balance is
probably around RM200,000.

Lieutenant Danish: I have RM100,000 in my savings account. I guess that’s enough for us to
buy a brand-new fishing boat in Besut. You can earn much more money from this business.
Consider it as an investment for yourself. You can use the earnings to pay for your friend’s
treatment.

Fadhil: It is a good plan. You can include it in your plan. So, when will we be heading to Besut?

Lieutenant Danish: As soon as possible, we need to be fast. They expected some big
hurricane in the South China Sea within the next six months. Said, I’ll give you the honor to
name our fishing boat, what would you name it.

Fadhil: I guess I’ll name the boat as ‘The Jessica’. She cannot walk very much with her
condition, but I really want to travel around with her, so to travel in a boat named after her
sounds good enough for me.

Lieutenant Danish: That is very sweet of you. Alright let’s go to Besut and earn some fortune.

Fadhil: Alright, sir.

Fadhil: Both of us travel to Besut later that night, but not before I send my goodbye to Jessica.
It hurts me to leave her in this way, but I will do my best for her. With Lieutenant Danish boating
skill and my tenacity. We started our own squid business. The first two months on the boat
produced next to nothing.
Fadhil: We only caught around 1kg of squids today, roughly 200 grams better than yesterday.

Lieutenant Danish: Well, I guess it will get better over time. Weather forecast said there will be
a typhoon next week. What do you think, Fadhil?

Fadhil: Jessica always said, ‘There’s no rose without a thorn’. Maybe the situation will look bad
next week, but we cannot afford to lose more money. I say we endure the typhoon and continue
the squid business.

Lieutenant Danish: Alright, if that is what you call, I have nothing against it.

Fadhil: A week later, the Typhoon Vamei hit the shore of Terengganu. Some of the fishermen
tried to sail in the weather but all of them failed. But not for us, ‘The Jessica’ was built like a
tank. It survives almost two storey high waves with ease. They hit the jackpot as we caught
almost one ton of squids that day. We earned RM1,000,000 as we were the only fishing boat
with catches that survived the typhoon. A week later, I went back to Jessica.

Fadhil: Hello, Jessica.

Jessica: Fadhil, it’s been 3 whole months since I last contacted you. I saw you on the news last
week. You are the only boat out there during the typhoon. Thank God, nothing bad happened to
you.

Fadhil: Yeah, we are lucky since we got ‘The Jessica’.

Jessica: The Jessica?

Fadhil: Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you about our boat named The Jessica. It is as tough as you. It
survived a whole extreme typhoon. I hope you too, can survive this disease and live a long life
with me.

Jessica: Fadhil…I don’t have much time for me. The clock is ticking while my breaths are
slowing. You don’t have to do anything for me, sitting here while talking to you already soothes
my mind. I just need you to take care for yourself. Now it’s time for you to think about your future
and what you will do next.

Fadhil: But I can’t imagine the future without you. I just……

Jessica: Shush… Fadhil you have been my friend since we were just a child. Remember when
you saved me from those bullies.

Fadhil: Yeah, how can I forget that moment. The first time you came into my life.

Jessica: Remember when I ask you to run from those bullies. I saw you run as fast as
lightning, like a bird out of a cage, free from any burden and problems. I want you to live that
way, Fadhil. Like the old Fadhil that I knew. Carefree and happy.
Fadhil: I never thought I changed that much.

Jessica: You have, Fadhil. All this burden you try to carry by yourself. Prioritize yourself first a
little. Probably treat yourself with an adventure to places you have never been, because that
suits you much more than sitting still here. Enjoy the life that I couldn’t. Well, it’s time for my
daily checkup. The nurse will be here in a minute. I’ll see you later then.

Fadhil: I will be staying in Besut for three months. So, I won’t be able to visit you soon.

Jessica: Oh, that’s a shame. I’ll guess that’s a goodbye.

Fadhil: Her last word gave me a sudden rush of emotions. I left the hospital with uneasiness in
me. A month later, while I just came back from spending a whole night capturing squids, I was
greeted by dozens of missed calls and a voicemail. As I was listening to the voicemail, my heart
skipped a beat as the sender introduced herself as the nurse from Hospital Penang. Jessica is
no longer with me.

Fadhil: A week later I visited Jessica’s grave., I bought her favorite flower, peonies. I placed the
bouquet at her headstones as I talked to her.

Fadhil: Sorry, I wasn’t there in your last moments. But every second that I spend with you, I will
treasure it to the end of time. You taught me a lot; you knew me more than I knew myself. You
pushed me to run, run away from the dark and be my guiding light in life. For that, you always
have a special place in my heart.

Fadhil: I knew she would be mad if I stay sad forever. So, I followed her advice. An advice from
a girl on the brink of death guiding a man to live. I handed the squid business to Lieutenant
Danish. All the money I gain from the business, I donated to cancer research organizations,
hoping that they could do what I couldn’t; saving their loved one’s lives. I keep a small fraction
for myself to travel around the world. I met a lot of people with different cultures and
backgrounds. Her advice really helped me a lot in going through tough times. Later, I got a call
from an adoption center. Before she died, she had already planned an adoption paper for us
and that’s when I met you, my sunshine. I guess that’s all for my story.
