Chapter 5 Discussion

1. After months of insufficient recognition (and two years without a

raise), you accept an offer from another firm for a $2,000-a-year
raise. When you tell your boss you are resigning, you are told how
crucial you are to the business and are offered a raise of $2,500 per
year. What do you do? Why? What problems might exist if you
accept the buy-back?

When faced a problem with a current there is a close need to look

at the situation very carefully and then take a decision of staying or
leaving the current job:
a. Evaluate my priorities- First I will find all the reason that made
me find a new job and accept the offer. After finding these I
would if the other job fulfills them and make a decision.
b. Risk off layoffs: Accepting a counteroffer right now may lead to
a future layoff as the employer may offer a higher salary right
now as they need me. And if in future they face financial
problem they may consider laying me off.
c. New employer’s perception- If I would reject the offer given by
the new company the employer may have a bad imprecision
about me and which would make me loose a chance to apply in
future in the same company.
In the end the decision would depend on me and I would personally
prefer moving with the new company considering my future goals and
advancement.

2. In small businesses, managers usually handle their own recruiting.

What methods would you use for the following situations? Why?

(a) The regular janitor is going on vacation for three weeks.

In this case I would consider speed recruitment where I would go up to

the temporary employment agencies and employee referrals .
(b) Your office assistant who manages all appointments and handles all
filing in your office has the flu and won’t be in the office for two days.

In this case I would have the other office assistants share the work of the
assistant who has flu till he/ she is recovering.Or I would hire a
temporary contract worker for short time who could work during the
absence of the employee.

(C)Two more salespersons are needed: one for local customers and one
to open a sales office in Victoria, British Columbia.

For hiring the local sales person I would with employee referral
encourage the staff to refer a person who is familiar with the local
market and clients. I would upload the job availability on online job
boards including the requirements.

For hiring for the sales office in Victoria: Local job listings upload on
Victoria’s local job board so I find a person who is familiar with the
local market. And it can attract people who are living in Victoria itself.I
would go to the recruitment agencies in Victoria as they have deep
networks.
