tastes. I tasked students with exploring the musical tastes and backgrounds of their families in
order to figure out how they developed their own. What parts of our tastes come from a
specific cultural background? What parts come from their newfound communities/cultures?
Students would then bring their findings to class in the form of a presentation.
The next step to expand upon this assignment and align it with the points presented in student-
centered learning, I would have students group up and share their findings with their group
partners. From there, I would encourage students to listen and examine the backgrounds of
others, hopefully learning things about their own culture and tastes with how they compare to
others. I would help guide their discussions, but they would be able to inspire their own
learning and ask genuine questions to one another based on their own musical curiosity.
