Philosophy Multicultural Education

My ideal classroom setting is a circle sitting arraignment, all the students having the same

opportunity to see what is happening in the middle and can face each other, in my opinion, this is

the most inclusive way to teach, in a circle nobody is excluded, nobody is in the front nor in the

back, it is democratic and the teaching process could be engaging an exciting from there, the

process to include all the different cultures that may be in my classroom will be a default, all the

students will have the same opportunities to see, listen and express themselves. Also, this would

allow me to be more aware of all students’ behaviors no one could hide behind anyone, and all

(including me) will learn together. This philosophy of teaching comes from my Capoeira

background; Capoeira is practice on a circle, and all levels of experience and ability are mixed

together a master with more than 50 years of experience could be next to a kid that just had one

class, we all share and learn together.

As a person who has experienced several cultures myself, a multicultural environment is

a must, and I will do all that is in my ability to promote it; I would be excited to have kids with

different cultural backgrounds and I’ll make sure that all kids feel safe and proud of their

heritage. One of the first activities that I will assign is a presentation about your partner, I would

partner them up and they would have to do research and interview their partner's family, and give

a presentation to the group. Clearly, I will ask the families for authorization, and I believe this

would open the door for a close relationship with them and will set up my mindset for the year.

These presentations also will help me to understand more and know my students’ backgrounds

better and I’ll make sure to use them to nourish a multicultural classroom.

I have to recognize that I am not very well-versed in all the different cultures that I may

encounter however, with the partner’s presentation activity I will also learn about them and in

that way learn how to support all the different cultures that I will serve.

Then after having learned about my students’ culture, I will research literature that could

help us (me and the students) to know more about cultural differences, for example, Brazil

celebrates the Saci perere day. This is a one-legged elf-Ish character that uses his magic cap to

disappear at will, this celebration happens all November 3, and there are several books about it.

Like this example, I will make sure to have as much material as possible about all the cultures

that I can.

Lastly, for the learning environment, I will use whatever visual aids that the students

make for their presentations, and then I will try to make more and ask them to choose which ones

they like the most, and also try to have seasonal themes with different cultures, for example, for

Halloween I will decorate with Dia de Muertos, Saci and regular Halloween items.

As mentioned at the beginning of the assay for my inclusion something that has to be for

default and I will work to share my view with my students and my peers.
