Hryhoriy Skovoroda is a great Ukrainian philosopher, humanist
and educator, an outstanding poet of the 18th century, who
made a huge contribution to the development of the philosophical thought of the Ukrainian and Russian peoples. He wrote many different works that have survived to our time and are undoubtedly praised by many people today. Skovoroda is called a preacher of the philosophy of love and freedom. The concept of worldly wisdom developed by the philosopher amazes even people in the 21st century, who are not easy to surprise with anything. Skovoroda taught that the most necessary things are usually given to a person easily and without unnecessary labor. If the desired is not given, it means that one should not seek to possess it, since the actions of people contrary to fate entail world chaos. Skovoroda was a welcome guest of ordinary people, where he found shelter, food and a friendly attitude. Wanderings in Ukraine gave him the richest material for criticizing social injustice. His teaching markedly reflected the contradictions of the peasant movement of that time, the feelings and moods of the working people, the moral purity of their ideals and aspirations. Skovoroda sharply condemned the pursuit of profit, rank, wealth, he condemned the era that brought with it impoverishment of the spirit, the decline of high moral values. I can say with confidence that Grigory Skovoroda is the greatest man of his time. And I am proud to study at a university that praises his name.
