ADVENT SEASON
Advent has a twofold character: for it is a time of preparation for the Solemnities of Christmas, in which the First Coming of the Son of God to humanity is remembered; and likewise when, by remembrance of
this, minds and hearts are led to look forward to Christ’s Second Coming at the end of time. For these two reasons, Advent is a period for devout and expectant delight [General Norms for the Liturgical Year and
the Calendar (GNLYC) 39] . Each gospel reading has a distinctive theme: the Lord’s corning at the end of time (First Sunday of Advent), John the Baptist (Second and Third Sunday), and the events that prepared
immediately for the Lord’s birth (Fourth Sunday). The Old Testament readings are prophecies about the Messiah and the Messianic age, especially from Isaiah. The readings from an apostle serve as
exhortations and as proclamations, in keeping with the different themes of Advent [General Introduction to the Lectionary (GILM) 93].

On weekdays of Advent, there are two series of readings: one to be used from the beginning of Advent until 16 December: the other from 17 to 24 December. In the first part of Advent there are readings from
Isaiah, distributed in accord with the sequence of the book itself and including salient texts that are also read on the Sundays (GILM 94 ).The weekdays from 17 December up to and including 24 December are
ordered ina more direct way to preparing for the Nativity of the Lord (GNLYC 42 ).

AGUINALDO MASSES
The Aguinaldo Masses, also known as "Simbang Gabi" is a novena of Masses in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Expectant Mother of God, and in preparation for the commemoration of the birth of our
Savior. It is a form of Filipino popular religiosity or popular devotion expressed not in novena of devotional prayers but in the liturgy from December 16 to 24. These Masses are festive in character and are said
with special solemnity where the "Gloria" is sung even on the 3rd and 4th Sundays of Advent but ONLY during the Aguinaldo Masses. The Alcina report tells us that even Christmas carols were sung at the
Aguinaldo Masses in the Visayas and perhaps even in Manila, where he had stayed for a total of four years during his ministry in the Philippines.

From the historical perspective, the First Plenary Council of the Philippines, in 1953, applied for a papal indult that the nine days preceding the Nativity of our Lord shall be celebrated once a day with great
solemnity and with a big attendance of the faithful and for the rest of the other scheduled Masses during this period, Advent has to be observed in all its rigor. The intention for the celebration of the “Misa de
Aguinaldo” is: “pro constantia Indorum in fide et pro religionis conservatione in his partibus, quae causa gravissima sane et pubblica est; quippe maxima est ratio quae pro Religione militat”. (Translation: "for
the perseverance of the natives in the faith and for the preservation of Religion in this part of the world; certainly, a very weighty reason for the advancement of Religion"). On March 24, 1961, the petition was
granted for a period of five years. Until today, the Philippine Church continues to cling strongly to the centuries-old tradition of celebrating the "Aguinaldo Masses" with undiminished attendance and festive
joy.

In contrast to the festivity in character, the readings and liturgical texts are directly concerned with the immediate preparation for the Christmas feast. In this regard, the Parish Music Coordinator should seek
advice and consultation with their respective parish priest. The parish priest, in his own pastoral discernment, may decide whether the Christmas carols shall be sung during Simbang Gabi.

CHRISTMAS SEASON
Next to the yearly celebrations of the paschal mystery, the Church considers nothing more important than the memorial of Christ's birth and early manifestations. This is the purpose of the season of Christmas.
Christmas Time runs from First Vespers (Evening Prayer I) of the Nativity of the Lord up to and including the Sunday after Epiphany or after 6th of January, therefore the Christmas Season in the Catholic
Church, technically start on the Christmas Eve (Dec. 24, after sunset) and continues throughout the octave with its special feast days, including the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God on January 1, includes the
feasts of the Holy Family, Epiphany and Baptism of the Lord.
