CASE EXERCISE 1
City pattern Study-Short trip to city/town covering old parts as well as recently planned
developments and understand how a settlement grows and driving forces behind the
growth.
History
Stone inscriptions identify Bagadige as the ancient name of Bagalkot. According to
legend, the area was gifted by the mythological Ravan, lord of Lanka, to his musicians. Other
taluks in Bagalkot also have mythological origins.
Over 191 Middle Palaeolithic localities have been discovered in the Kalagdi basin of the
district. The discovery of settlements in the village of Lakhamapura near the Malaprabha valley
yielded the identification of quarzitic artefacts such as handaxes and cleavers. A pre-Chalukyan
brick temple was discovered at the foothills of Bachinagudda, in Pattadakal, where an idol
depicting the bust of Chaturmukha Shiva was discovered. Evidence of megalithic habitation was
also discovered at the foothills of Bachinagudda, as were Marahathi and Satavahana coins of a
later period.
The Yadavas of Deogiri annexed Bagalkote in 1190 CE and ruled until approximately the
thirteenth century. The Deccan invasion by the Muslim Khalji dynasty, led by Ala ud din Khalji
in 1294 brought an end to the rule of the Yadavas. In the 14th century, much of this territory was
overrun by Muhammad Taghlaq. That the Taghlaqs were undisputed overlords of this territory
cannot be established since Harihara, first king of the Vijayanagara Empire, is supposed to have
possessed territories as far north as Kaladgi in 1340 and because a fort was built under
permission from Harihara in Badami during that period. In the late 15th century, the Adil Shahi
dynasty founded by Yusuf Adil Shah established an independent state with Bijapur as its capital.
It is from this time that Bagalkot’s history is homogeneous to that of Bijapur’s. In 1818, after
having lost their kingdom to the British, the Maratha Peshwas of Satara were crowned under
lords of the kingdom. With the failing of their brief reign which ended in 1948, the district
passed into the hands of the British Raj and was incorporated into the dominion of the Bombay
Presidency.
DEMOGRAPY
According to the 2011 census Bagalkot district has a population of 1,889,752, roughly equal to the
nation of Lesotho or the US state of West Virginia. This gives it a ranking of 249th in India (out of
a total of 640). The district has a population density of 288 inhabitants per square kilometre
(750/sq mi) . Its population growth rate over the decade 2001–2011 was 14.46%. Bagalkot has
a sex ratio of 984 females for every 1000 males, and a literacy rate of 69.39%. 31.64% of the
population lives in urban areas. Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes make up 16.89% and
5.14% of the population respectively.

AGRICULTURE
Agriculture is the largest employer in Bagalkot, with over 65% of the working population
engaged in it; approximately 80% of female workers in Bagalkot are engaged in agriculture. Like
most of north Karnataka, Bagalkot is very rich in black soil which is conducive to the cultivation
of cotton. Bagalkot's economy was valued at US$5.6 billion, making it the 12th largest economy
in Karnataka. The approximate per capital income is US$360. The chief crops cultivated are rabi
and jowar, as well as groundnut, cotton, maize, bajra, wheat, sugarcane and tobacco. Jowar is
largely cultivated because it can be grown during rainy seasons as well as during the winters. The
crop also is the chief supply of food for the people. Pulses are also grown in the region,
primarily tuvar daal, gram, kulthi, and mūng daal. Castor oil, linseed and sesamum are also grown in
Bagalkot. Water supply for irrigation includes reservoirs such as the Kendur reservoir, which is
six miles from Badami and the Muchkundi reservoir, which is 4 miles from Bagalkot. Famine
due to lack of adequate rains is quite common in Bagalkot. A famine that struck the region in
1901 inflicted considerable financial loss to the agricultural industry in Bagalkot. The district has
the fifth highest farmer suicide rate in Karnataka. Efficient water management techniques and
government sops have only marginally mitigated the repercussions of the drought stricken
district.

TOURISM
Badami Caves

The Badami cave temples are located in the town of Badami in the north-central part
of Karnataka, India. The temples are about 88 miles (142 km) east of Belgavi (IATA Code:
IXT), and 87 miles (140 km) northwest of Hampi. The Malaprabha River is 3 miles (4.8 km)
away. The cave temples are 14 miles (23 km) from the UNESCO world heritage site
Pattadakal and 22 miles (35 km) from Aihole – another site with over a hundred ancient and
early medieval era Hindu, Jain and Buddhist monuments.
Badami, the one time capital of the Chalukyas , is noted several temples, some
structural & other rock-cut, of the 6th & 7th Centuries. The foundations of Badami, or Vatapi
as it was called, were laid by Pulakeshi I (535 – 566 AD) his son Kirtivarman, the Ist (567 –
598 AD), beautified the town with temples & other buildings

Aihole

Aihole has been a part of Hindu mythologies. It has a natural axe-shaped rock on the
Malaprabha river bank north of the village, and a rock in the river show a footprint.
Parashurama, the sixth Vishnu avatar, is stated in these legends to have washed his axe here

after killing abusive Kshatriyas who were exploiting their military powers, giving the land its
red color. A 19th-century local tradition believed that rock footprints in the river were those
of Parashurama. A place near the Meguti hillocks show evidence of human settlement in
prehistoric period. Aihole has historical significance and has been called a cradle of Hindu
rock architecture.
Pattadakal

The Pattadakal monuments are located in the Indian state of Karnataka, about 165 kilometres
(103 mi) southeast of Belgaum, 265 kilometres (165 mi) northeast from Goa, 14 miles (23
km) from Badami, via Karanataka state highway SH14, and about 6 miles (9.7 km) from
Aihole, set midst sandstone mountains and Malprabha river valley. In total, there are over
150 Hindu, Jain and Buddhist monuments, and archaeological discoveries, dating from the
4th to 10th century CE, in addition to pre-historic dolmens and cave paintings that are
preserved at the Pattadakal-Badami-Aihole site. The tiny village of Pattadakal is situated on
the banks of the Malaprabha river. Referred to as Petrigal by Ptolemy, Pattadakal was later
known variously as Raktapura (Red Town) & Pattadakal Kisuvolal . This place reached its
pinnacle of glory under the Chalukyas from the seventh to the ninth centuries functioning as
a royal commemorative site. The group of about ten temples, surrounded by numerous minor
shrines & plinths, represents the climax of early Western Chalukyan Architecture. King
Vikramaditya II (734 – 745 AD) and his art loving queens Lokmahadevi &
Trailkyamahadevi, brought sculptors from Kanchipuram to create fantasies in stone in
Pattadakal .

ASSESMENTS

The Mahakuta group of temples is located in Mahakuta, a village in the Bagalkot

district of Karnataka state, India. It is an important place of worship for Hindus and the
location of a well-known Shaiva monastery. The temples are dated to the 6th or 7th century
CE and were constructed by the early kings of the Chalukya dynasty of Badami. The dating
of the temples is based on the style of architecture which is similar to that of the temples in
nearby Aihole[1] and the information in two notable inscriptions in the complex: the
Mahakuta Pillar inscription dated between 595–602 CE (written in the Sanskrit language and
Kannada script);[2] and an inscription of Vinapoti, a concubine of king Vijayaditya, dated
between 696–733 CE and written in the Kannada language and script.

Kudalasangama

Kudalasangama (also written as Kudala Sangama) in India is an important center of

pilgrimage for Lingayats. It is located about 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) from the Almatti Dam in
Bagalkot district of Karnataka state. The Krishna and Malaprabha River rivers merge here
and flow east towards Srisaila (another pilgrim center) Andhra Pradesh. The Aikya Mantapa
or the holy Samādhi of Basavanna, the founder of the Lingayat sect of Hindu religion along
with Linga, which is believed to be self-born (Swayambhu), is here. The Kudala Sangama
Development Board[2] takes care of the maintenance and development.
Kudala Sangama most historic place since around 800 years. The famous rivers
Krishna and Ghataprabha merge here and flows towards Srisaila (another historic palce) of
Andra Pradesh. To improve this historic place, Government has established a Kudala
Sangama Development Board and provided nearly Rs. 45.00 Crores to develop this places
has one of the most sought piligrim centre. Herewith we are showing some of the photo’s
which shows most recently takenup works to improve the piligrim centre. Kudala Sangama
is 15 Km’s from Almatti (Dam Site ) and 45 Km’s from Bagalkot.

Almatti Dam

The Almatti Dam is a hydroelectric project on the Krishna River[1] in North

Karnataka, India which was completed in July 2005. The target annual electric output of the
dam is 560 MU (or GWh).[2]
The Almatti Dam is the main reservoir of the Upper Krishna Irrigation Project; the 290 MW
power station is located on the right side of the Almatti Dam. The facility uses vertical
kaplan turbines: five 55MW generators and one 15MW generator. Water is released in to the
Narayanpur reservoir after using for power generation to serve the downstream irrigation
needs. Two separate facilities namely, Almatti 1 Powerhouse and Almatti II Powerhouse
each separated by distance do provide power generation capabilities.

Prepare a plan indicating plot size, far, building height and open space using AutoCAD
software using the data obtained from field
INTRODUCTION:
Floor Area Ratio (FAR)
Floor area ratio (FAR) is the ratio of a building's total floor area (gross floor area) to the size of
the piece of land upon which it is built. It is often used as one of the regulations in city planning
along with the building-to-land ratio. The terms can also refer to limits imposed on such a ratio
through zoning. Written as a formula,
FAR = gross floor area/area of the plot
Benefits of floor area ratio
Rules and guidelines with respect to FAR helps keep the construction in check and also ensures
the structural safety of a building, to some extent. In the absence of FAR/FSI rules, unauthorized
constructions will increase. Here are some of the benefits of FAR
There is a clear demarcation between open spaces and built spaces
 Helps authorities to foster stable

and location of functions and tools should be almost identical. This tutorial was developed with
QGIS 3.20.

The QGIS interface is composed of the main menu and a number of panels and toolbars. Panels
and toolbars can be dragged around the interface. They can be docked to the interface edges or
be free-floating.

Important Panels

There are two panels that will probably be open by default when you run QGIS for the first time.
They are the Layers panel and the Browser panel. These are the panels you will probably use
most frequently in QGIS.

In the image below the panels are in a tabbed configuration on the left side of the interface. Your
panels may not be tabbed, as shown in the image, but you can create tabbed panels following the
directions below. First I want to give you an overview of the Layers and Browser panels since
we’ll be using them frequently.

Layers Panel
The layers panel displays the different data layers that you have loaded into QGIS. Anytime you
add a vector, raster, or tabular data file it will be displayed in the Layers panel. You can access
information about these layers by right-clicking, or double-clicking, on a layer in this panel.

Note: Some operations will only be performed on a layer that is highlighted (or selected) in the
Layers panel. You can highlight/select a layer by clicking on its name in the Layers panel.

Browser Panel
The Browser panel displays your computer’s file structure and other data sources. From the
Browser panel, you can navigate through directories and add files to the QGIS interface by
clicking and dragging (we’ll do that in just a minute).

Adding, Removing, and Moving QGIS Toolbars and Panels

If you find a toolbar or panel is missing it is easy to add it back to the interface. From the Main
Menu select View. Then hover over the Panels or Toolbars option and you will see the available
panels and toolbars. Select a panel or toolbar to add it to the interface (see image below).

You can remove a panel or toolbar by unchecking its box from the View menu.

QGIS toolbars and panels can be moved around the interface. To move a toolbar, click and hold
on its far-left side, then drag to the desired location. Toolbars will snap to the top and side of the
QGIS interface.

Panels can also be moved. To move a panel, click and hold at the top of the panel, near its title,
then drag to the desired location. Panels will snap to the top, side, and bottom of the QGIS
interface. Blue boxes show the snapping location.

To create a tabbed panel (see image above) drag and hold one panel on top of another. A blue
box will show where the panel will be snapped

Add a

Basemap to QGIS
Let’s get started with an actual map. QGIS comes with Open Street Map available by default.
You can access Open Street Map in the Browser panel (add the panel if you don’t see it) under
XYZ Tile (see image below).

To add Open Street Map, click and drag it from the Browser panel into the center map area of the
interface (this may be the News or Project Templates area for new projects). Now you should
have a base map that covers the entire world
