Book Title: Power of a woman

Author: Barbara Taylor Bradford
Publisher: Harper Collins
Date Published: 1997

Genre: Fiction Book Code: BAR PBI NV/314

This novel tells the story of Stephanie Jardine is a mother of 4 children and
this story revolves around her life as a successful businesswoman who runs the
American branch of Jardine’s, a prestigious Crown Jeweler in London. He must
confront his past and struggle to understand how life can be changed so suddenly by
another person, after an act of violence committed by a stranger on the other side of
the world changed his life.
In my opinion, The character stand out in this novel is Stephanie Jardine.
Because he is the main character in this story. Starting with losing a child at the age
of 17 and then losing her husband at the young age of 23, leaving behind 3 sons and 1
daughter and a family that would not accept him, Stevie rose through it all by sheer
strength. Despite having everything, he has to fight for everything he gets.
I want to be like Stephanie ‘Stevie’ Jardine’s character because she is the
epitome of all things a woman dreams of, she is smart, beautiful, compassionate and
is one of the finest minds in the jewelery business.
An interesting story point in my opinion is when Stephanie Jardine became
the head of a prestigious London based jewelery shop. The story takes place in
Connecticut, where Stevie experiences a strange feeling of dread and foreboding
while walking the streets of a foggy November afternoon, which adds mystery and
intrigue to the novel.
The part I didn’t like was when Stevie was fighting for his daughter, Stevie
had to go back to his own past and face a relationship that just broke his heart. For

1
Stevie to save his injured life and ensure his future. Stevie begins to realize how
fragile life is and how it can forever be changed by others when they least expect it.
If I were the author, I would change one of the stories, which is that I don’t
think Stevie needs to go back in time, because he can support himself and his
children. Or maybe Stevie is looking for someone new and remarrying so he doesn’t
go back to his past and remember the things that broke his heart.
This novel reminds me of the struggle of a mother who is willing to do
anything for her child even though it causes her to experience bad things. But for the
sake of her child, the mother is willing to fight and do anything.
From this novel I learned that love, empathy, and compassion are powerful
tools that can heal even the deepest wounds, and that women are capable of
extraordinary things when they think about it. The importance of the family and the
strength of women’s resilience. Another important message is the importance of
honesty, as the characters must face their past secrets and mistakes to move forward
in life. This novel also emphasizes the importance of forgiveness and redemption,
because the characters learn to forgive themselves and others for past mistakes.

Book Title: Spellcaster

Genre: Fiction Book Code: CLA PBI NV/433

This novel tells about a teenage girl named Nadia who moves to the city of
Captive’s Sound with her father. When she gets there, she learns that she comes from
a lineage of witches and has magical powers of her own. Nadia gradually discovers
that the town of Captive’s Sound is affected by a curse that has haunted her for
centuries. He learns that his family is linked to the curse and he has a vital role to play
in unraveling the mystery behind it.Together with new friends such as Mateo and
Verlaine who also have their own magical powers, Nadia is involved in the fight
against the evil forces that exist in the city. They embark on a journey to understand
the origin of the curse and find a way to overcome the evil forces that threaten their
city and life.
In my opinion, there are several characters that stand out in this novel. Among
them is Nadia who is the main character as well as the hero of the story. She is a
young girl who recently found out about her magical powers and her family’s role in
the curse of the Captive’s Sound. Nadia is curious, strong, and brave, and she
becomes the main driving force in solving mysteries and fighting the evil forces in
the city. Nadia has a friend named Mateo is an important character in the story. He is
Nadia’s new friend in Captive’s Sound and becomes close to her as the story
progresses. Mateo has dark secrets and magical powers of his own, which make him a
complex and interesting character. And also Verlaine who is a girl who also has
magical powers. He is Nadia’s friend and becomes part of their journey to uncover
the secrets of the Captive’s Sound. Verlaine has a bright personality, but also has
emotional baggage and personal struggles that make her stand out in the story.
I think I want to be like Nadia’s character because Nadia is portrayed as a
strong, curious and brave teenager. He seeks to find out about his origins and powers,
and understand his role in fighting the evil that exists in Captive’s Sound.

3
The point I really like is from the relationship between mateo and nadia. The
relationship between Mateo and Nadia builds slowly. But once it all started, it all
went fast and felt like instant love. I really liked their chemistry and even though they
had some misunderstandings, but managed to solve it as rational human beings and
good communication. They work together as equals, even though each has skills that
the other doesn’t. Mateo never treats Nadia condescendingly. In fact, they have great
respect for one another, and show gentleness and understanding.
The part I didn’t like was when Verlaine was constantly ignored or bullied by
everyone in Captive’s Sound because apparently she was cursed too. Nobody cared
about Verlaine. Because a witch lives in Captive’s Sound and has destroyed the life
of one member of the Cabot family in every generation and we assume she did
something really horrible to the Verlaine family to put a curse on her when she was
one year old.
If I were the author I would change one of the stories where the witch doesn’t
curse Verlaine or even though Verlaine is cursed the people in Captive’s Sound feel
sorry for and care for her. And I wish Verlaine got more attention. Especially how
often his gaze complained about Nadia and Mateo staring at each other.
I think this novel reminds me of a movie I’ve watched. I don’t remember the
title, but even though it doesn’t exactly reflect the story and elements in this novel,
this film has similarities in terms of themes and story elements that can provide a
similar experience for viewers who like stories with magical world, the battle
between the forces of good and evil, and the exploration of the main character’s self-
identity.
What I can learn from this novel is the importance of accepting oneself and
accepting our heritage or family identity. Nadia’s character discovers her magical
powers and discovers the importance of accepting and appreciating who she really is.
This message teaches the importance of accepting oneself with all its strengths and
weaknesses. And the importance of having the courage to face fears and overcome
obstacles in life. And The characters in this story support each other and work
together to fight against the forces of evil. It teaches readers the importance of having
friends you can rely on and achieve bigger goals together.
