CHAPTER 4: ANCILLARY SERVICES
ANCILLARY SERVICES
● Refers to diagnostic and support services
provided to help treatment and diagnosis of an
illness or injury.
● This support services extends and facilitates the
primary care provided by doctors, dentists, and
nurses.
● Any support service such as room, board,
medical and nursing services are considered
ancillary service.
● They include laboratory, pharmacy, radiology,
and physical therapy services.
● The ancillary services is designed to help the
various departments handle their tasks more
efficiently which results in faster delivery of
healthcare services.
● The clinical laboratory and/or concerned
department processes the requisition send by
the nursing department. The first step is to open
the new request followed by Render Service.
● Once completed the examination or procedure
are performed by their respective departments.
This could be done by the use of a laboratory
information management system or laboratory
management system which automates the
process.
● On the other hand, the department could
perform the examination or procedure use the
Examination Upshots to record the results for
further review and interpretation.
EXAMINATION UPSHOTS
● The examination upshots makes use of the
examination result entry form to manage the
laboratory result of the patient.
● The design of the form varies from one
healthcare institution to another but basically it
contains components such as the patient
information, name of the test, the result, and
the normal value and reference value
● Reference Value
○ Refers to a set of test values used by the
laboratory which were obtained from a
defined state of an individual or group.
○ The range shows applicable or
acceptable value that characterizes a
healthy group of people.
CHAPTER SUMMARY
● Ancillary service refers to diagnostic and
