Its good to be aware that not all electrical conductors and cables are the same. The insulation type determines the areas they can and cannot be used Dry Locations ‘A location not norinally subject to dampness or wetness A location classified as dry may be temporarily subject to dampness or wetness, as in the case of 2 building under construction. Damp Location: Locations protected from weather and not subject to saturation with water oF other liquids but subject to moderate degrees of moisture Examples of such locations include partially prctected locations under canopies, marquees, roofed pen porches and lke locations, and interior locations subject to moderated degrees of moisture such as basements, some barns, and some cold storage buildings Wet Locations: Installations underground or in concrete slabs or masonry in direct contact with the earth; in locations subject to saturation with water or other liquids, such as vehicle washing areas, and in unprotected locations exposed to weather. A location in which water or other liquid can drip, splash, or flow on or against electrical equipment Common Wire Insulation Maximum Application | insulation Trade Namo } TypeLetter | Operating |p, ovisions | ‘Temperature | astic | Thermoplastic T 60°C Dry Location | Thermoplas tae Flame Retardant, [7 Moisture- } Ww arc Dry and Wet | syoisture resistant deni” Location | Thermoplastic Thermoplastic | Flame Retardant, | Heatresistant | ay one Dry Location | Heat-resistant Thermoplastic ‘Thermoplastic Flame Retardant, Moisture and 75°C Wet Location | jyoisture and Heatresistant | THHW Heat-resistant 90°c Dry Location Thermoplastic Thermoplastic Flame Retardant, Moisture and 75°C | DryandWet | Moisture and | Heatresistant | THW ae ie aise Thermoplastic Thermoplastic a Flame Retardant, | been ‘ 75°C Dry andWet | Moisture and | Heatresisant | TH mesa, ¢ | wewrocre Thermoplastic Thermoplastic Flame Retardant Moisture and 75°C Dry and Wet | Moisture and Heatresistant | RHW ) eee ae Location Heat-resistant "4 Rubber 18 The "T" stands for {hermopiastc, the type of insulation Covering the wire itself. The term circular raceway is finding its way into the Code to distinguish between raceways that are circular in configuration from raceways that are rectangular such as wireways. ‘The following paragraphs describe several types of materials classified as rhe code has introduced acronyms for most raceways as Shown The code etal conduit (IMC), rigid metal conduit (RMC), flexible metal FMC), rigid polyvinyl chloride conduit liquictight flexible nonmetallic conduit raceway. Tt recognizes intermediate In: conduit (FMC), liquidtight fiexible metal conduit (L HOPE), (PVC), high density polystnylene conduit ( electrical nonmetallic tubing (ENT) (LFNC), electrical metallic tubing (EMT), an RADES@ES—S=SY iMilimeter (mm) 15 am a rar See | Why 32 +, 40 2 | 50 65 | 90 100 | 5 125 | é 150 | Steel coy duit has Deen i i IN Use as a ‘raceway system’ for electrical conductors Since the earl ly 1900s, The wall thickness and strength of steel make metal condult wiring method ri fecognizec smcileeters, e aidtion a providing the most mechanical protection to the enciosed propery instated al benefit of using steel conduit is that the Code recognizes @ ‘metal conduit system as an equipment grounding conductor Metal or metalic would include both ferrous and nonferrous. + Nonmetalic raceways would include PVC, ENT, and fberalass + Couplings are usad to connect sections of a raceway. « Locknuts, meta bushings, or connectors are used to connect raceway to boxes or fitings. Three basic types of steel conduit are in use today: intermediate metal condutt, and electrical metalic tubing ‘gid metal cond, RIGID METAL CONDUIT (RMC) A threaded raceway of circul physical protection conductors and cables that rn through it (thickwal) construction made of steal ( ferFOus ) with protective coatings (aluminum). ‘The standard length of RMC is 3 meters or 10 fest MC has the thickest wall, which makes tthe heaviest steel conduit. ean be used indoors, ‘outdoors, underground, and plications. RMC is avaliable in rade sizes 7 through lar cross section designed for the routing and It is of heavy-wall in both concealed and exposed 2° 6 INTERMEDIATE METAL CONDUIT (INC) y of cuiar cross section and lighter weight ¢° A listed threaded stee! raceway wall than RMC. tt has a larger interior type steel electical corsuit IMC has a thner iar raceway is often permitied to contain more conductors diameter, as a result, this circu! ized RMC. The standard finished tenth of IMC, wih couping is 3 meters ( 10 fee) it requirements, and are permitted in Fittings Electrical metalic tubing is a nonthreaded, thinwall raceway. Because EMT is not Permitted to be threaded, sections are joined together and connected to boxes, other fittings, or cabinets by couplings and connectors. EMT fittings available include the setscrew, compression and indenter styles. Set-screw. When used with this type of fiting, the EMT is pushed into the coupling or Connector to the stop and is secured in place by tightening the set-screws, This type of fiting is classified as concrete-tight but is not raintight. Installation of EMT Due to numerous failures of EMT in underground installations, many electrical inspection authorities will not permit EMT to be installed underground or in concrete slabs that are on or below grade. It is also common for electrical consulting engineers to require the use of PVC conduits ‘Several kinds of bends can be made with the use of the bending tool. The stub bend, the back-to-back bend, and the angle bend. Other types of bends include offset, saddles and kicks 23 RIGID NONMETALLIC CONDUIT ( RNC) ‘A nonmetallic racaway of circular cross section, with integral or associated couplings, connectors, end fittings for the instalation of electrical conductors end cables. It comes in two wail thickness Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 (thicker wall). It is bent by heating the raceway until itis flexible, RNC uses PVC glue and attach fittings. It is easy to cut using a hacksaw or PVC cutter. The table below shows the trade sizes for PVC conduits eR TRADE SIZES INCHES (in.)
