 What is urbanization?
Urbanization is the process through which cities grow, and higher and higher percentages
of the population come to live in the city.

 What are the main causes of Urbanization?


There are two main causes of Urbanization Industrialization: More people have been
attracted to move from rural to urban areas on account of improved employment
opportunities. Commercialization: Better commercial opportunities and returns compared
to rural areas.

 Problems of urbanization
The problems associated with urbanization are: High population density, inadequate
infrastructure, lack of affordable housing, flooding, pollution, slum creation, crime,
congestion and poverty. But when poorly planned, urbanization can lead to congestion,
higher crime rates, pollution, increased levels of inequality and social exclusion.
Inequality within cities has economic, spatial and social dimensions.

 What are the problems of urbanization in Pakistan?

Following are the biggest challenges facing urban policymakers.


 Poor housing quality and affordability.
 Water and Sanitation.
 Transportation.
 Health.
 Education.
 Land Management.

 What are some of the solutions to the problems of


urbanization?
Solutions
 Combat poverty by promoting economic development and job creation.
 Involve local community in local government.
 Reduce air pollution by upgrading energy use and alternative transport systems.
 Create private-public partnerships to provide services such as waste disposal and
housing.
 Plant trees and incorporate the care of city green spaces as a key element in urban
planning.
