Martin Luther King is an African-American Baptist minister. He is best known as a non-violent

activist devoting his life to civil rights for blacks in the United States. He organized and led several
actions to defend voting rights, desegregation, and employment of ethnic minorities.
His speech entitled I have a dream, which he delivered on August 28, 1963, in
front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, became famous. Martin Luther King
was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, making him the youngest recipient to

Martin Luther King was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta (Georgia). In 1953
Martin became a Baptist minister in Montgomery, Alabama.

In 1955 Martin obtained his doctorate in theology from Boston University in the
United States and led the Montgomery bus boycott following the Rosa Park event.

In 1959 His book The Measure of A Man, in which he depicted an optimal structure
of society

Then in 1963 the President of the United States, John F. Kennedy, intervened
once again to free Martin Luther King from prison following the March on
Washington

In 1963 he delivered his speech I have a dream in Washington (I have a dream

that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not
be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character)

In 1964 To allow more African-Americans to register to vote, the pastor

organized a peaceful march in Selma, Alabama. In all, 600 people walk alongside
him. After a few kilometers, they are violently stopped by the police and a
disgruntled crowd. This day is known as Bloody Sunday and in the same year he
received the Nobel Peace Prize

In 1967, a year before his death, Martin Luther King gave a speech denouncing
the Vietnam War.
