SLR EOG Power Car for Mail / Express

Trains of Indian Railways

1
Project on recurring Cost Savings by
improving Operating Efficiency
From 50%
to 90%
Focus on improving energy conversion
efficiency

SLR Revenue
No impact on the revenue earning = SLR EOG
to Railways revenue

Innovate using known & proven technology / methods

Objective:

• Reduce energy cost to operate conventional Mail & Express passenger trains.

Ground Rules:

• No addition of drag load on the locomotive.

• No compromise on existing revenue earning space.

Key Technology:

• Use of DG set suitable for mounting under the coach (under floor power-pack)

• Opportunity to Save Energy Cost on conventional Mail & Express passenger

trains.

• This can be done by moving to “End on Generation” (EOG) concept from
“Self Generating” (SG) Concept.

2
Current Concepts for Electricity Generation
(Hotel Load*) on Trains

SELF GENERATION (SG) – Majority of Mail & Express Passenger

Trains

END-ON-GENERATION (EOG) – Only Shatabdi & Rajdhani Trains.

MID-ON-GENERATION (MOG) – Obsolete Concept.

HEAD-ON-GENERATION (HOG) – Under review & proto-typing.

For electrified tracks only.

* Hotel Load – Electrical Energy required by all Coaches in a train

How can this be done?

• Eliminate the SG system, i.e., axle mounted generators, batteries etc.

• Transit to improvised EOG system, i.e.,

• Improvised EOG system: Under floor (under slung) mounted DG sets on SLR
coach as against over-board DG sets in current EOG Car (Power Car).

Conventional EOG Car (Power Car) SLR Power Car

• Extra Drag. • No change in passenger Space.
• Only 4T luggage area. • No change in luggage area (8T).

Value To Railways:
Reference taken is 24 coach passenger train.

Cost Saving per year per train

• Reduction in capital cost (1 time)
at the time of building the new Rs. 93,94,000 One-time Benefit
train.
• Improvement in Energy conversion Rs. 1,30,77,000
efficiency from ~ 50% to 90%+.
Rs. 10,74,000 Recurring Benefit
• Reduction in over-all weight of the
Rs.1,44,63,000
train by approx. 5%.
• Maintenance Cost Savings on Rs. 3,12,000
coaches.

Apply this on 1500 odd mail / express passenger trains

Railways have an estimated opportunity to save Rs.2160
Crores annually
