CHAPTER I

The Problem and Its Scope

Rationale

The ability to read and comprehend are essential skills for students to survive and

understand how society works because most information are presented through text. Prior

research shows that reading helps mental development (Van, 2009: Yaseen, 2013). Seminal

contributions have been made by Ogbodo (2002), Bhan & Gupta (2010), and Singh (2011)

have done work on reading and it shows a promising effect on the overall development of the

students, especially for their academic journey. A series of recent study has indicated that the

ability to comprehend helps the academic performance of the students. Cimmiyotti (2013)

stated that reading is fundamental at all levels of the educational system because all subjects

in the course involve reading and this will lead to better academic performance. Nyarko et al.

(2018) in their study shows that a positive relationship between reading proficiency and

academic performance. Palani (2012) present findings shows that effective learning reflects

the reading skills of the students. Moreover, when students take part in constant reading, it

doesn't only improve their vocabulary but also contributes to their comprehension of

concepts (Duru and Koklu, 2011), which are significant for understanding and overall

performance in school. However, the educational system is challenged to produce effective

readers. This hinders the schools to meet its goal to provide quality and well informed

individual.
Poor reading comprehension among junior high school students can have a profound impact

on their academic performance. Students with poor reading comprehension may struggle to

analyze, evaluate, and synthesize information from texts. This limitation can hinder their

ability to engage in higher-order thinking tasks, such as problem-solving, critical analysis, and

logical reasoning, which are essential for academic success across various subjects.

They may encounter challenges in understanding and acquiring new words, leading to a

limited vocabulary repertoire. This limitation can impact their ability to comprehend subject-

specific terminology, express their ideas effectively in written and oral communication, and

perform well in language-related tasks.

Poor reading comprehension hinders students' ability to understand and interpret written

texts.

They may struggle to extract key information, comprehend complex ideas, and make

connections between different concepts. As a result, their comprehension of subject-specific

content, such as science, history, and literature, may be compromised, negatively impacting

their academic performance.

Students with poor reading comprehension may experience decreased motivation and

engagement with academic materials. Frustration and a lack of confidence in their reading

abilities can lead to disinterest in reading-related tasks, reduced participation in class

discussions, and a reluctance to engage with course materials. This disengagement can further

impact their overall academic performance.

This study aims to explore the specific ways in which poor reading comprehension affects

academic achievement in this crucial stage of education. By understanding this relationship,

educators and policymakers can develop targeted interventions and strategies to support

students in improving their reading skills and enhancing their overall academic success.
