CPE 311 LABORATORY EXPERIMENT #03

UNIVERSAL GATES AND EQUIVALENT CIRCUITS
OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the exercise, the students should be able to:
▪ create a logic circuit using logic diagram
▪ create a truth table form logic circuit.

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT

(list down all the materials and equipment you have used in this experiment)

PRINCIPLES:

The "Universal" NAND Gate

The Logic NAND Gate is generally classed as a "Universal" gate because it is one of the most
commonly used logic gate types. NAND gates can also be used to produce any other type of logic
gate function, and in practice the NAND gate forms the basis of most practical logic circuits. By
connecting them together in various combinations the three basic gate types of AND, OR, and NOT
function can be formed using only NAND.

PROCEDURES:
NOTE: Please observe safety precautions and proper handling while conducting the laboratory experiment. This experiment
is to be performed under an instructor’s supervision.

UNIVERSAL GATES
NAND and NOR gates can be combined to form other logic gates. You must prepare for this lab
by following the schematic diagrams of the following circuits, made up entirely of:

1. UNIVERSAL NAND GATE

Using a single 7400 IC,
connect a circuit that
produces
a. a two‐input AND,
b. a two‐input OR,
c. a one‐input NOT,

2. UNIVERSAL NOR GATE

Using a single 7402 IC,
connect a circuit that
produces
a. a two‐input AND,
b. a two‐input OR,
c. a one‐input NOT,

3. In each case, create and

verify your circuit by
checking its TRUTH
TABLE (separate sheets
of short bondpaper). Use
a separate sheet of paper
for the truth table.

The diagram below shows one way to use AND, OR, and NOT gates to build the equivalent circuit
for Ex-NOR and Ex OR gate.
1. Create a logic circuit for the following logic diagram.
2. Create a truth table (on separate sheets of short bondpaper) for each logic diagram.
Make sure your results match the truth table.
