Subject: Progress report

Good morning Sir,

I understand you requested an update on my policy paper. As we all know, the benefits of nanotechnology
in the food industry are substantial and we cannot stress this enough. Below are some facts I believe will
support my claim. I came across these during my research on the subject.
1. Even though they may try preserving them, food items tend to spoil faster after being opened.
This problem can be quelled as nanotechnology helps improve the shelf life of food, thereby
increasing its durability [1].
2. Nanosensors (developed from nanotechnology) can be used to quickly, sensitively, and efficiently
detect microbes or pathogens within our food [1].
3. It enables target-specific delivery of vitamins. It also provides protection to the molecules of
these vitamins through nanoencapsulation, as they are sensitive to degradation [2].
4. Nanomaterials can be used to reinforce bioplastics which can then replace fossil-fuel based
plastics used for food packaging and carry bags [3].
5. Improved procedures for food packaging have been realized. According to El Amin in a report
“In the food packaging sector, nanomaterials are being developed with enhanced mechanical and
thermal properties to ensure better protection of food from external chemical or microbiological
effects. This would endow packaged food with an additional level of safety and functionality.”
[3].
Rest assured; the policy paper will be completed duly.
Yours sincerely,
Promise Dappa.
