1. Short Description
The MTS 1 master clock is a versatile control unit for impulse clocks and
self-correcting time displays, suitable for operation world wide due to its
power supply system and the optional GPS satellite receiver synchronisation.
The master clock offers an excellent user friendly menu and relay program
ming with manual override. With the optional plug-in memory module
(Dongle) programs can be written externally and simply downloaded into the
master clock. The software provides multilevel keyboard lock functions to
prevent unauthorized use. Standard execution is a 3.unit high sub-rack
module, optional complete sub-racks in half or full width and wall or table
mounting housings are also available.

4. Safety Instructions

• The master clock must not be connected to voltages other than specified: 85 to 265 VAC,
47-400 Hz. Within the specified voltage range the master clock detects the connected voltage
automatically.
• Use the correct cable cross section for the connection of the master clock.
• The ambient temperature range of +5 to +40° C must not be exceeded.
• The unit is only suitable for operation in dry and clean areas.
• The unit must not be operated outdoors or in wet areas.
• The unit must be protected must be protected from humidity, splash water and heat.
• Do not operate the master clock near flammable fluids.1
• The unit is unsuitable for children and must be installed in an inaccessible location.
• The master clock must only be connected and commissioned by authorized technicians.
• The regulations of relevant local authorities must be obeyed.
• Ensure that the unit is not operated in areas with flammable gases or dust.
• Should the master clock require repair, use only original manufacturer's spare parts to
avoid malfunctioning, damage or injuries.
• Repairs must only be carried out by qualified technicians.
• Fluids entering the unit can easily damage the electronics. If fluids have entered it
is compuisory to get the unit tested by a qualified technician.
MTS 1 Manne Operating Manual 3
Attention, danger ! •.,

• Before opening the master clock, unplug it from mains and remove all cable connections.
Ensure there are no live voltages.

• High tension cables and leads that are connected.'with the master clock, have to be checked
for any damage at regular intervals. If a cable or leadhas been found faulty, the unit should be
switched off and left disconnected from mains until the damaged cables or ieads have been
replaced.

• Before installation and commissioning of the master clock the user is advised to check, if the
unit is suitable for the_ required purpose.
• If in doubt, it is essential to consult with specialists, local agents or the manufacturer of the
equipment.

• Please note that wrong operation of the master clock and/or incorrect cable connections can
result in costly damage. In such an event the warranty would be void and any repairs would
have to be charged.

• Do not connect live wires to the unit.

the menu texts appearing in the display.

5.3.3 Relay Keys

Both program relays can be operated manually with the ON, OFF and AUT keys.
The corresponding yellow LED indicates the current contact condition.
The keys override the automatic program, provided this function has not been locked.

5.3.4 Power
The yellow LED indicates if mains power is "on" or "off". LED "on"= power "on".

Please note: We strongly recommend to operate the keys with your fingers only. Do not use
sharp or pointed objects like pencils, ball pens, etc.

5.5 Time and Date

5.5.1 Setting the Master Clock's Time and Date

Time and date need only be set manually if the master clock operates in quartz mode and is not
. . onnected to a time co.de receiver (GPS or DCF radio).

The MTS automatically detects if a receiver is connected.

Is this the case, the display will first indicate SEARCHING SIGNAL. After a few minutes of good
reception SIGNAL OK 1'tll be displayed..
Now time and date are automatically set in full synchronisation with the external signal.

If no receiver is connected to the master clock, QUARZ will be displayed and system time and
date will have to be set manually:

F4 - MAIN MENU - F1 TIME

The clock stops. SET UTC-TIME The figure with the flashing cursor can be altered as follows:
F3 <+ = up, F4 <- = down, F6 >>> = move cursor.
Set the time a few seconds ahead of the reference time.
At the correct reference time press FB START > to start the system time.

SET UTC-DATE will appear.

Enter the current date using the same method as for time.
Press FB NEXT > to return to the main menu.

5.5.2 Synchronous start of slave clocks

Make sure that all slave clocks show the same time.

START> F7 (flashes) The slave clocks will be set to the correct time in second
intervals.
If one slave clock is one minute slow, turn its impulse lead plug
180° and correct the time manually.
BACK> F5

5.6 Relay Circuits

5.6.1 Manual override and Protection.

In some cases it might be necessary to manually override the automatic relay program.
This can be done using the 6 round keys on the front panel under RELAYS.
The state of the relay contacts is indicated by yellow LEDs. It does not matter if the relays are
controlled manually or by the program.
If the "AUT" LED is on, the program is active.
If the "AUT" LED is off, the program is not active. In this case the relay contacts are fixed in the
ON or OFF position, as indicated by the LEDs.

MTS 1 Marine Operating Manual 7

5.6.2 Relay Switching Modes

The software provides for three different switching modes:

a. ON/OFF
means that the relay is switched ON, resp. OFF at a pre-set time. (e.g. for
the control of lighting, security systems, entry control systems, etc.).
Two ,program entries are r:equired: .one for the ON time/date and one for the ri

OFF time/date. ••
b. TIMER ,
The relay contacts close for a programmable duration 1 - 60 seconds at a
programmed time (e.g. ringing a school bell, etc.).
Only the switch-on time/date need to be programmed.
c. PERIODICAL
One or more hourly repetitive ON/OFF switching sequences (e.g. for the
control of fans, pumps, recorders, etc.).

5.6.3 Block Programming (Grouping)

For easier programming and shorter programs it is possible to combine repetitive program times
into groups (blocks) as follows:

F1 < DAILY Program repetition every day.

F2 <MO-FR Program repetition Monday to Friday.
F3 < MO-SA Program repetition Monday to Saturday.
F4 < SA-SO Program repetition only on Saturday and Sundays.
F6 < SINGLE DAY Program execution on predetermined days.
or
F6 < DATE Dated programs with yearly repetition (only available in ON/OFF
programming mode).
F7 < HOLIDAY Facility to enter the dates, when the program should not be carried out.
e.g. 15-07-1999 PROG OFF
18-08-1999 PROG ON

5.6.4 Relay Programming

The relay program is very flexible. A number of options prqvides for simple and fast programming.

NMEA-to-DCF Converter

Note:

This NMEA-to-OCF Converter reads the time and date information from the $GPRMC
Message of NMEA 0183 V.2. on 4800 Bd. Please make sure this telegram is available on
the RS-232 line.

Installation:

Connect the unit to:

MTS-1
NMEA-Signal (RS-232)

Check:

1. Press the CHECK Button. Look at the green LED pilot lamp inside the casing.
If it turns on and off slowly once every 2 seconds, the antenna is connected correctly,
but it is not yet getting the signal.
If the LED flashes once every second, then the antenna is getting the GPS signal.
