AA0511 - Assessment Hint and Tips

Hello Everyone,

Please find below some hints, tips and guidance on how to prepare for the poster and narrative
elements of your assignment.

The examples provided are not exhaustive and are to be used as a ‘guide’ so please use the
knowledge and information that you have gained from the seminars and OSL’s to assist you further
with your work.

As always use the time within your seminars to ask the lecturers any questions you may have about
the assessment. If you do no not ask, we cannot help you.

Your Innovation
You need to ensure that your innovation is contemporary and has an impact or makes a difference
to service users (patients/public) or communities which will allow you to identify and also discuss the
concepts of collaborative person-centred care. It is important to research and read widely around
your innovation to find out where the idea originated, identify any key policy, guidelines, literature
that will support the innovation.

Examples of contemporary innovations: wearable technology, jelly drops, music therapy, specific
health apps, PJ paralysis, there are so many more that you could choose.

Please ensure that you check your idea with the lecturers taking you for your seminars to ensure
that your choice of innovation is appropriate.

Poster
 You are asked to: Create a clearly structured poster that creates a visual impact to engage
a professional audience – 20%

In seminars 3, 7 and 10 you will have the opportunity to explore what makes a good/ not so good
professional poster and also start working on your own ideas for your poster. There are examples on
the eLP of posters in the folder for seminar 7.

The poster can be created directly on word document or on a PowerPoint slide and saved so the
picture can be copied and posted into a word document. It does not matter if your slide is landscape
or portrait – it just needs to be A4 size.

When planning the layout of your poster you need to think about the visual impact that it has on the
reader, consider the following points:

1

Try and use pictures, bullet points, diagrams to reduce the amount of text on your poster – too much
text makes your poster too busy, difficult to read and can detract from the impact you are trying to
achieve. Any images that you use must be copyright free and referenced beside the image.

When referring to literature (references) within your poster, you must include the author/s name
and date e.g. Bloggs (2020). At the bottom of your poster, you will include a reference list of
authors/articles cited within it. It is expected that you will also include the full reference in your
reference list in Harvard style at the end of your written work.

When looking at your poster and thinking about the innovation you have chosen, what key messages
and information do you need to show? Think about your poster as being a synopsis or a summary of
what you are going to write in more depth about in the 1,000-word narrative. You may perhaps wish
to summarise the titles that are used for the narrative e.g. Choice of innovation and specific group
the innovation is aimed at, barriers and challenges, role of the nurse – it is important to cover these
aspects within your poster as this is the assessment criteria.

Separate Narrative
This piece of work will be added after you have attached your poster to your word document.

It is important that your work is written in third person, therefore refrain from using I or my.

 You are asked to: Provide a rationale for the selection of a contemporary innovation,
taking into consideration the impact the innovation can have on your specific patient
group, the wider community and the nursing and healthcare profession – 25%

It important to note that when you are being asked to provide a rationale for the selection of
innovation it is not asking for your personal reasons for choosing the innovation. You are being
asked to identify why the innovation was needed? What was the reason for this? Who initiated or
had the idea or identified the need for the innovation? You also need to think about who is your
population/people in relation to minority, socioeconomic groups – who does your innovation relate
to? What does the innovation you have chosen to propose to do? As with any literature used to
support your writing, you must reference this correctly within your work and in your reference list.

 You are asked to: Identify the barriers and challenges that service users may encounter
with this innovation – 25%

When thinking about the innovation that you have researched you will have already in the previous
section identified the need and benefit of what you have chosen. Now in this section start to explore
the barriers – what would make it difficult for the service users/population to access the service or
innovation? Think about the challenges of health and digital literacy (this was covered in seminar 4
and 6), the motivation of the individual to use the innovation, the cost or funding required to use or
acquire the innovation, perhaps the individual is not aware that the innovation is available? As with
any literature used to support your writing, you must reference this correctly within your work and
in your reference list.

 You are asked to: Reflect upon the role of the nurse in the promotion of collaborative
compassionate person-centred care in relation to this innovation – 30%

Throughout this module the role of the nurse in providing collaborative compassionate person-
centred care had been embedded in all of the learning materials. You specifically have OSL 2 which
explores theories of person-centred care, linking to service improvement and you will have attended
seminar 2 to consolidate the important concepts in relation to the role of the nurse.

In this section you may wish to link to: a model or theories of person-centred care, the relevance of
the NMC code. You need to demonstrate through the use of literature your understanding of the
roles/skills that the nurse possesses to provide compassionate person-centred care e.g., the use of
education, collaborative decision making, signposting the individual to the innovation, the role of
health promotion…. This discussion must be linked to the innovation that you have chosen, not a
‘general’ discussion on the role of the nurse. As with any literature used to support your writing, you
must reference this correctly within your work and in your reference list.

Submission checklist
You will need to attach a front sheet including your name, student number, cohort, personal tutor,
title of your assignment, word count and date of submission.

The order of your work should be displayed as follows:

 Front sheet
 Poster (ensure it is in the correct orientation to read)
 1,000-word written narrative
 Reference list

Please ensure that you save your completed work as a word document or a pdf document as
Turnitin will reject it if it is in any other format.

As with any assignment try to complete you work in good time so that you are not rushing to submit
at the last minute – remember the rest of your year group will be submitting their work and there
could be a delay with Turnitin due to the large volume of submissions – please review the
assessment policy in the assessment brief folder in relation to penalties for late submission.

I hope this has been helpful – please ask any further questions that you may have in your seminars.
