On Sunday, 8th October 1871, a small fire

started on a very windy night in Chicago, USA.
The small fire became a big, dangerous fire.
Chicago’s firefighters ran to the fire. People
saw the fire and left their homes. They were
terrified!
Then, something horrible happened. The
firefighters’ water stopped. There wasn’t any
water! The big fire was going from house to
house and street to street. It was burning
thousands of houses and the firefighters
couldn’t stop it. Finally, something lucky
happened – it started to rain! Rain fell on the
fire and the fire stopped.
People went back to their homes, but there
weren’t any houses there. About 90,000 people
lost their homes. The fire burned 18,000
houses, shops, theatres, churches, hotels and
other buildings, and 300 people died.
