Project Title Design, analysis and simulation of a 3-bearing swivel module (3BSM)
mechanism for a VTOL plane.

Batch No. 25

Abstract:

In this report, we will present the design, analysis, and simulation of a 3-bearing swivel
module mechanism for a VTOL plane. We will be taking inspiration from the F-35B’s (a
variant of the F-35 Lightning II) 3-bearing swivel module (3BSM), which is a key
component of the aircraft's STOVL (short takeoff and vertical landing) capability. We will
demonstrate how the mechanism works for the set constraints. It will be able to vertically
take off, hover at said altitude, manoeuvre while hovering, transition to a fixed wing or
horizontal flight, and land vertically. We will also show its structural integrity, CFD
simulations, electronics layout, and performance as a propulsion system.

The objective of this report will be to show that the 3BSM mechanism is a compact design
that can operate even on smaller wing areas, which results in a smaller aircraft overall.
Additionally, the 3BSM mechanism reduces the complexity of the aircraft by eliminating
the need for additional propulsion systems, such as a separate set of vertical takeoff and
landing engines. It eliminates the long takeoff procedure, which saves time and money, it’s
also a much more efficient way to take off a plane.
