Broken Lands Character Creation

Step 1: Aspects
• A character has 4 Aspects:
o High Concept: This is the utmost statement about your character and who they are.
o Trouble: This could be a personal weakness, recurring enemy, important obligation, anything that makes your life complicated.
o + Two “free” Aspects: These can personalities, backgrounds, relationships, history, affiliation, quirks, status, interests, attitudes, etc.
May also be abilities or special nature(s).
• Aspects function as both Aspects from the FATE rules, as well as Distinctions from the CORTEX rules.
• Each Aspect begins at a rating of d8.

Step 2: Approaches
• A character has 6 Approaches:
o Acumen (reason, logic, clever, intellect, knowledge, deduction)
o Care (focus, awareness, in tune, deliberate, precise)
o Cunning (guile, covert, creative, ingenuity, deceit, unorthodox)
o Flair (flashy, daring, bold, hutzpah, guts, center of attention)
o Force (dynamic, power, brute, strong, bulldozer)
o Speed (quick, haste, swift, expedient, reflexive)
• Assign the following die values to each of the Approaches: d10, d8, d8, d6, d6, d4

Step 3: Knacks
• A character has 5 Knacks:
o Aristocrat (people & interaction stuff)
o Engineer (making & fixing stuff)
o Explorer (living & doing stuff)
o Fighter (fighting & defending stuff)
o Scholar (thinking & knowing stuff)
• Assign the following die values to each of the Professions: d8, d8, d6, d6, d4
o You can step up one die by stepping down another.

Step 4: Specializations & Signature Assets


• A character has 5 points to spend on Specs and Signature Assets:
o Specializations are narrow Areas of Expertise
o Signature Assets can be gear, contacts, relationships, and etc.
• Spend one point to create a Spec or Signature Asset at a d6.
• Spend two points to create a Spec or Signature Asset at a d8.

Step 5: SFX/Stunts
• Create 3 SFX/Stunts for the character.
• SFX/Stunts are created under and linked to an appropriate Aspect or Signature Asset.
