21CET501- Hazard, Vulnerability and Risk Assessment

M.Tech. (DAM) 1st Semester (2021-22)

Assignment: 3

1. What are the different parameters indicating damage potential of ground

motion at a site during an earthquake? How these parameters vary with the
magnitude of earthquake and distance of site from epicenter.

2. Write down the various steps in DSHA and PSHA.

3. What are the Local Site Effects on the earthquake ground motion?

4. Write a short note on Design Response Spectra as per IS 1893 (Part 1):2016. How
are the time periods of buildings estimated?

5. Explain how horizontal seismic coefficient Ah and Seismic base shear Vb for a

building is calculated based on IS 1893 (Part 1): 2016.

6. Determine the PHA in g for site A and B for the normal circular segmental fault
F1 and reverse straight line fault F2 shown below. Using the following
attenuation relationship, determine the Design Base Shear Coefficient for a
three storey Steel building with infill (h = 6 m and d = 12 m). Use IS 1893 (Part
1): 2016 spectral shape.

ln PHA(gals) = 6.74 + 0.859M – 1.80ln(R+25)

7. Fault 1 has potential to generate magnitude 6.0 earthquake, Fault 2 has

potential of 7.6 magnitude earthquake, and Fault 3 has a potential of 5.5
magnitude earthquake. The perpendicular distance from fault 1, 2 and 3 are 25
km, 40 km and 20 km, respectively. Using the following attenuation
relationship, determine the Design Base Shear Coefficient for both three storey
URM and RC buildings (h = 9.9 m and d = 18 m). Use IS 1893 (Part 1): 2016
spectral shape.

ln PHA(g) = -4.14 + 0.868M – 1.09 ln [R + 0.0606 exp(0.7M)]

8. Compute the probability that a magnitude 7.5 earthquake on the San Andreas
fault (strike-slip fault) would cause

a) A surface rupture longer than 90 km

b) A rupture area greater than 900 km2

c) A surface displacement higher than 2.1 m

9. Determine the PHA in g for site A for the normal fault F1 and reverse fault F2
shown below. Using the following attenuation relationship, determine the
Design Base Shear Coefficient for a four storey Steel bare frame building (h =
16 m). Use IS 1893 (Part 1): 2016 spectral shape.

ln PHA(gals) = 6.74 + 0.859M – 1.80ln(R+25)

10. Generate the design response spectra for Jaipur City, using NDMA’s PSHA
recommendation and compare it with design response spectra of IS 1893 (Part
1): 2016 for the same city. (for Return period ≈ 500 years, Site class - C).
