Introduction to Storage Tank

Storage vessels containing organic liquids can be found in many

industries, including:

ü Petroleum producing and refining,

ü petrochemical and chemical manufacturing,
ü bulk storage and transfer operations, and
ü other industries consuming or producing organic liquids.

Six basic tank designs are used for liquid storage vessels:
ü fixed roof (vertical and horizontal),
ü external floating roof,
ü domed external (or covered) floating roof,
ü internal floating roof,
ü variable vapor space,
ü pressure (low and high)

Various shape of
pressure vessels
• Cylindrical (flat, conical, tori-conical,
tori-spherical, semi-ellipsoidal,
hemispherical heads) FIRED PRESSURE VESSEL
• Spherical (External heat source/firing)
• Spheroidal
• Boxed (flat rectangular or square
plate heads)
• Lobed

Aboveground Storage Tank

• A storage tank is a container usually used to:

o Holding liquids
o Holding compressed gases (gas tank)
• Those fluid stored at various pressure and temperature. Thus, storage tank is
design for both condition. Covered in Pressure Vessel
