ASSIGNMENT 1 (Observations): After arrival, take a seat in a nonintrusive location to

begin your classroom observations. Complete the questions below:

Observation 1: What are your first impressions of the classroom environment? Is it warm,
inviting, organized, etc? Describe the physical environment in detail. >>>

The classroom is very warm and inviting, it is spacious with lots of detail. For a room with no
windows, it is very bright and playfully decorated with tons of cat posters which I love! The
most interesting detail I saw was the light covers with scenes from Pete the Cat. Every space in
the room is utilized by décor, material, or furniture. There are four desks, a group desk, and
Mrs. Goe’s desk in the right corner in front of the class. It is a bit of organized chaos, but it
works daily for the class needs.

Observation 2: Please describe the student make-up of the class, including gender, ethnicity,
ELL, students with physical challenges, and any other apparent attributes that are important to
note. >>>

It was hard to get a grasp on the student make-up. I observed for four hours on Monday,
December 4th and six hours on Friday, December 8th and the consensus was that there is a
major attendance issue and a large shortage on substitutes. The first day there were multiple
students missing but I gathered that the class was made up of Caucasian, African American,
Hispanic, and Asian students. There were no physical challenges that I noticed, there was one
student who seemed to have a tic where he would hit the back of his neck repeatedly but when
called upon, he always knew the answer. On Friday there was a teacher out sick, and their class
was split between all 1st grade classes, this meant Mrs. Goe took two more students for the day.
It was a unique experience, and made the day proceed a bit crazy but it was nice to observe
more kids. There was a student that had been out for two weeks who I never got to meet. There
was some students I saw that were continually disrupting the class.

Observation 3: What are the posted class rules in the room? (exactly as written) >>>

Rule #1: Follow directions daily.

Rule #2: Raise your hand for permission to speak.
Rule #3: Make smart choices.
Rule #4: Use class hand signals for help.
Rule #5: Be kind and respectful to everyone.
Diamond rule: Keep your eyes on the target.
Observation 4: Does the teacher enforce these posted rules? Are rewards or consequences being
used for compliance or noncompliance? >>>

Yes, they are enforced with an app that teachers, students, and parents can use called
ClassDojo. Students can earn points depending on their behavior. Outside of points Mrs. Goe
will give students time limits to complete things, gives corrections, and runs her classroom
with hand signals so as not to disrupt the class. If a student continually becomes disruptive, she
will “call them out” in front of the class to show by example the choices they are making are
not okay. If it continues then they are only allowed to enjoy a modified version of arts & crafts
or lose a privilege of another kind as well as a message or phone call home to parents.
