India Woodwork Industry Outlook
India Woodwork Industry Overview

• India has several tree species whose wood is used for making furniture. The country has more than 250 commercial

timbers which include some of the most valued tropical hardwoods like teak, rosewood, padouk, red sanders and

sandalwood. Wood accounts for about 60% of the raw materials used in India furniture market.

• Apart from wood material available in India, many wood species are also imported to make up for the deficit in domestic

supply. Log usage in the Indian panel industry is met from plantations, agro-forestry, and (limited) natural forests. The

concept of industry-owned plantations of eucalyptus, poplar, casuarina, and acacia mangium has gained popularity and

has helped to avert illegal felling in state-owned forests.

• Wood based furniture consumption in India is growing. Woodwork is one of the fastest growing sectors in India, with

more than 100,000 registered woodworking units, more than 200,000 artisans, and innumerable other woodworking

related units.

• The wood panel industry includes engineered wood such as plywood, MDF (Medium Density Fiberboards), HDF (High

Density Fiberboards) and particle board, in addition to decorative surface products such as laminates.

• Plywood accounts for over three-fourth of the woodwork industry in the country, followed by MDF, HDF, marine wood

and others. India plywood industry is highly fragmented with 75% of the market share controlled by the unorganized

sector and remaining by the organized sector.

© TechSci Research 23
India Woodwork Industry Overview

• Century Plyboards India Limited and Greenply Industries Limited are among the two leading Pan India companies,

dominating the organized segment of India plywood market with a share of more than 26% each.

• There will be a rise of around 70% in demand for roundwood by 2030, majorly propelled by the construction sector in

India, reaching from 57 million cubic meter in 2020 to 98 million cubic meter in 2030.

• In India, doors and windows market is growing, as consumers are increasingly adopting innovative products and looking

for improved lifestyle and living standards with modern interior designs and concepts. Of the total doors market, 10%

share is held by doors made from MDF and molded-skin high density doors, whereas the doors made from other

materials such as rubberwood account for the rest of the market.

• Traditionally, carved wooden doors are an essential part of every home in India. However, the solid wood door industry’s

biggest challenge is the shortage of timber in the country, which is restricting the use of wood. This supply demand gap

is adversely affecting the door industry. The thickness of imported wood is not as per Indian specifications, which is

affecting the growth of the industry. However, the pre-hung doors or door-set concept is becoming popular in India and

this segment of the doors market is poised to register significant growth.

India Woodwork Industry Outlook

SIGNIFICANCE

•Mechanization of manufacturing processes in the woodwork industry promotes the rational and
economical use of raw materials, reducing manufacturers’ waste production. Thus, mechanization
helps in reducing the cost of material, labor and time.
•Mechanization in the woodwork industry provides a cutting accuracy of “0.000-0.001”, which is
significant for intricate work. It helps to attain the desired level of precision and enhances product
quality and standards.

MECHANIZATION PRACTICES USED

•Machines are used at various stages of the manufacturing process in the woodwork industry.
Plywood, which accounts for over three-fourth of the market, MDF, HDF, and other engineered
woods cannot be manufactured solely through manual labor without any aid of machinery.
Machines help in debarking huge logs, peeling, cutting, chipping, pressing, etc.
•Debarking machines, rotary lathes, and chipping machines minimize damage to the usable wood,
thus minimizing wastage and improving the production process efficiency.

CURRENT ADOPTION LEVEL

• While plywood manufacturing units can be either semi-automatic or fully automatic, production
plants for other major engineered woods like MDF and HDF are fully automatic. This scenario holds
for the unorganized market in India as well.
• Leading organized player Greenply Industries Limited has incorporated the latest European
technologies in its manufacturing plants. It has invested in front-end wood processing and chipping
machinery from Bruks Klockner (Sweden), chips storage and conveying machine from Trasmec
(Italy), fiber refining units from Metso (Finland) and fiber drying system from Sunds MDF
Technologies (Sweden).
• Greenply also uses the latest machinery for forming, press and raw board handling from
Dieffenbacher of Germany, an 8-head sanding machine from Steinemann of Switzerland, panel
sizing machinery from Giben (Italy) and a multi-fuel hybrid energy generation machine from
Thermax (India). To ensure optimal emission levels, the company has also invested in an advanced
dust extraction/fume absorption system supplied by Scheuch (Austria).

Mechanization in Woodwork Industry

EMERGING TRENDS
The woodwork industry in India is exhibiting a shift from manual work to semi-automatic
and fully automatic manufacturing units. Preference for engineered woods such as MDF
and HDF is rising across the country. Manufacturing of these woods requires fully-
automatic plants, unlike for plywood. Raw material utilization for MDF is 95%, while it is
only 65-70% for plywood, making it a preferred choice for manufacturers. This trend has
also encouraged manufacturers to offer value-added variants of plywood and MDF. For
instance, marine wood with integration Glue Line Protection formula and SSR (Strength
and Shape Retention) offered in Century Plywood products and launch of exterior grade
Club MDF by Greenply are couple of examples.

Consumers are also preferring wood alternatives for interior decorations and wooden
flooring, which is expected to drive the demand for new additions in the engineered wood
industry in the country including WPC boards, PVC laminates, etc. WPC is also preferred
over solid wood for door frames and wall decoratives due to low maintenance and
durability. Product innovation such as Relwood, which uses PTF technology (to strengthen
the natural fiber and polymer bond), is water-proof and sun-proof, and can be used for
several applications from outdoor decking, indoor paneling to furniture production.

Greenpanel is the largest producer of MDF with manufacturing plants in Uttarakhand and
Andhra Pradesh. The company has combined annual production capacity of 540,000 cubic
meters. The Chittoor plant is fully-automatic and India’s largest MDF plant which is spread
over 200 acres. The plant has Dieffenbacher Conti Panel System (CPS) at its core, which is
the longest continuous press in Asia, along with German-imported fiber dryer, SGF sifters
and gluing system. The plant is also equipped with forming station including a scalper with
a correction module, forming and finishing line with a triple diagonal saw, Lukki storage
systems and a sanding line with cut-to-size saw and exhaust system. Further, unorganized
market players are also using machines, especially for debarking, cutting, chipping and
peeling to reduce wastage of usable wood and produce cost-effective engineered woods.

Global Furniture Market Outlook
Global Furniture Market Outlook

• Various types of furniture used on a daily basis by consumers across the world are chairs, tables, desks, beds,

cupboards, dressing table and more. Materials used to manufacture furniture can be segmented into wood, metal and

plastic. Major application areas for furniture include commercial and residential buildings, motels, hotels, hospitals, etc.

• Region-wise, North America is the largest market for furniture products, followed by Asia-Pacific and Europe. The

furniture market in the Asia-Pacific region is expected to register double-digit growth during the forecast period, owing

to increasing demand from the developing markets of China and India that has huge middle income group population.

• Furthermore, rising urban population in developing countries and growing household disposable income are influencing

consumer spending patterns and diverting them to opt for comfortable lifestyle, thereby positively impacting global

furniture market. Low-cost furniture producing countries like China with large domestic market as well as significantly

high export volumes are also aiding the growth of global furniture market.

• The increase in number of residential and commercial construction projects post lockdown restrictions imposed by

several governments globally to curb the spread of COVID-19 is anticipated to increase the revenue of global furniture

market between 2021 and 2026. With the increasing number of housing units, demand for furniture across the globe is

expected to grow at a significant pace in the next five years. Some of the leading brands in the global furniture market

are IKEA, OKAMURA, Ashley Furniture, Steelcase, Lexington, Herman Miller, Stanley Furniture and more.

Demand and Supply Outlook
India Furniture Market Demand and Supply Overview

Production: With over 12,000 companies listed in the furniture directory of

India and a huge unorganized market, the country’s furniture production is
expected to grow at a healthy pace led by demand from residential and
construction sector. However, the supply chain disruption and temporary
ban on trade during lockdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic had a
significant adverse impact on FY2021 revenues of the India furniture
industry. The COVID-19 pandemic also highlighted the necessity of reducing
reliance on imports and increasing the digitization and automation of
production processes in the industry.

Inventory: Approximately, inventory worth 15-20% of total

sales is usually maintained by the manufacturers in India
furniture industry. Inventory maintenance costs are high for
furniture due to their tendency to gain moisture. However,
given the nature of business, transportation cost and time
involved manufacturers need to maintain this level of inventory.

In FY2021, the total value of furniture supply in India was

USD28.68 billion. An estimated surplus of over 18.5% was
calculated between the supply and demand of furniture in the
country.

India Kids Furniture Market Analysis
India Kids Furniture Market Analysis

The kids furniture industry in India is growing at a rapid pace and was its market size was estimated around USD1.34 billion

in FY2021. Demand for kids furniture in the country is yet to gain prominence due to numerous challenges, such as low
awareness, low availability, and high prices of furniture designed specifically for kids.

New age parents are looking for the best of everything they can afford for their kids. Customized bedrooms for kids, a space

where they feel happy and comfortable, is no longer a new phenomenon. This phenomenon is expected to increase the

demand for kids furniture, thus presenting an opportunity for furniture manufacturers to enter this segment and offer

innovative designs depicting cartoon themed characters like Barbie and Tom & Jerry.

Demand for kids furniture is anticipated to increase in the coming years, owing to the amassing of wealthy segment of the

Indian population. This population segment needs to be tapped and explored by designing and selling newer merchandize at

lesser prices than furniture being imported from Italy, France, and other countries.

India Kids Furniture Market Analysis

• In India, the beds (cots and cribs) segment held the largest market share of more than 40% in FY2021, in value terms. owing

to the increasing spending potential of the middle-class citizens in the nation. In contrast, the other kids furniture such as

chair, table, cabinet, dresser and chest (drawer) collectively accounts for the remaining percentages of the kids furniture

market, which are comparatively smaller in size. Their low cost presents the opportunities to the manufacturers to encourage

and attract the customers.

• The kids furniture is widely offered through both offline and online channels. However, customers in India prefer offline
channels as the purchase of furniture is more related to its touch and feel of its texture. The value share of offline channel

was estimated nearby 80% in FY2021. The online channels segment is expected to grow in the forecast period, owing to

changing customer trends, such as the growing number of modern and young parents who are shifting towards online
channels such as Pepperyfry, Urban Ladder, Amazon, and Flipkart because they are more convenient and time saving.

• The kids furniture market in India is segregated into South, North, West and East regions. The demand for kids furniture

solutions that accommodate clothes, books, toys, and other products in a space-efficient manner has increased in the

Southern region as a result of rising population, increasing number of nuclear families, and upgrading of livelihood. These are

some of the most important trends that indicate future growth.

• The metropolitan cities like Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai are among the top contributors to the

India kids furniture market. In Mumbai & Bangalore, the kids furniture market is observing an evolution as the modern

parents are focused on proving the best to their kids. Also, most of the well-known brands like Godrej Interio, Durian, and

Pepperfry, each owns a store in Bangalore.

India Recliners Market Analysis

• India's recliners industry is on the verge of rapid growth owing to the factors such as increasing disposable income of

consumers and the several benefits that recliners offer, such as comfort and relaxation. When the body is in a reclining

position, the spine is rested, the back is supported, and the legs are raised. This posture relaxes and rejuvenates the

body and mind and also reduces tension. It also provides other health benefits such as improved blood circulation,

mobility, etc.

• In terms of personal use, recliners are becoming increasingly popular since they are ideal for individuals of all ages,
including pregnant women and the elderly, who find it difficult to sit on a regular chair for lengthy periods of time. The

use of a recliner can assist in meeting the unique needs of various age groups. For instance, the recliner Auto Lift Chair

for seniors has "easy-lift recline" technology, which moves the entire chair at a slower speed to make it easier for a user
to get out of the recliner and walk.

• Another important reason for consumers' preference for recliners is that they provide excellent massage. Cyclo-therapy

technology is used in recliners to give an unrivaled and effective massage.

• In terms of distribution channels, the offline segment holds a prominent value share of 91% in the market as of FY2021.

However, the online segment is expected to register highest growth during the forecast period due to factors such as
increasing internet penetration, etc.

• In India, West India is the dominant region in the India recliner market with 37% of value share in FY2021, owing to the

large urban population in the region. The major cities for this market across India are Bangalore, Delhi and Mumbai.

These metropolises account for the majority share in India's recliner market.

Impact of COVID-19 on India
Furniture Market
Impact of COVID-19 on India Furniture Market

• A rise in the demand for home-office furniture items had been observed across
the country since the lockdown period. The lockdown scenario gave birth to a
work-from-home culture, which boosted furniture sales in India even more. The
1 Increased Demand for
Home-Office Furniture furniture set up for houses has evolved as a result of the necessity to spend
extended hours at home, share space with family members when working from
home/studying from home, and spend leisure time together. Moreover, money
that would have been spent on holidays is instead being used on home-related
purchases. Furthermore, many offices are still opting for work-from-home. The
physical discomfort and health related issues have motivated people to purchase
home-office furniture. These factors played an important role in boosting the
growth of furniture market during the lockdown period.

• The COVID-19 pandemic drastically altered the furniture business. The supply
chain disruption and temporary ban on the trade had a significant impact on the
2 Disruption in Supply-Chain
India furniture industry. The COVID-19 pandemic also highlighted the necessity of
reducing reliance on imports and increasing the industry's digitization and
automation.

• The strict COVID-19 lockdown imposed in India slightly affected the sales of retail
stores. However, the online channel reported higher sales of furniture during the
lockdown period, as it was the only safe and available option for the consumers.
Moreover, there has been an increase in demand for multi-functional, and
customized furniture for home offices and home schools. The furniture market of
3 Rise in Online Sales India has seen a shift in consumer preferences as people are choosing to buy
furniture items online rather than from retail stores. These shifts aren't limited to
the metropolitan cities, but also visible in smaller towns and tier II cities. Most of
the companies are expanding their online businesses and opting for e-commerce
channels to sell their products. For instance, in 2020, IKEA decided to invest in
online business to reach 100 million Indian customers by 2022.

Market Dynamics
Market Drivers
• The expansion of the Indian economy has benefited the development of
real estate and commercial buildings in the country. Both the industrial
and service sectors have experienced overall development. The fast
expansion of the real estate industry in India has been fuelled by the rise

Booming Real-Estate Sector of the services sector, which now accounts for more than half of the
1 Post Lockdown Restrictions country's GDP, while the rising KPO/BPO sector drives demand for more
office space. The increasing construction of commercial buildings to meet
the growing need for office space, coupled with housing, the most
common type of real estate in India, has led to the rising demand for
furniture in various commercial and residential spaces. Moreover, the
demand for luxury housing complexes is rising in metropolitan cities. As a
result, the demand for furniture such as couch sets, dining tables, beds,
tables, and chairs has grown and is anticipated to continue to grow at a
higher pace in the future.

• The rapid increase in the combined earnings of family members is

resulting in higher disposable income of the consumers, which is
Rising Disposable significantly boosting their spending power on furniture. Thus, an
2 Income increasing number of consumers nowadays are not compromising with the
product quality irrespective of the cost and prefer to choose comfortable
furniture items. Such consumer behavior is positively influencing the India
furniture market.

• Furniture is considered an essential item of home décor. It supports basic

everyday functions such as eating, sitting, sleeping, etc. It is highly

Market Challenges

India furniture market is majorly captured by unorganized players, which

acts as a major hindrance to the growth of this market. Low pricing and
diversity in variety of furniture products coupled with the presence of local
Highly
unorganized players helps the unorganized segment in holding the majority
Unorganized
market share, thereby posing a major challenge to the growth of organized
Market
furniture market. However, with growing brand awareness and declining
price sensitivity of people, the organized sector is expected to register
significant growth in India furniture market in the coming years and gain
market share.

Supply chain & inventory management plays a crucial role in the growth of Pe
any brand or market. Logistics & supply chain has been a major challenge to
retailers as well as distributors, as they are not able to maintain the lead
time due to fluctuations in demand and poor infrastructure in India.
Moreover, in home furniture segment, the challenge is to cater to the diverse
Ineffective consumer demands of India's market without increasing inventory or
Supply Chain
expenses. Furthermore, the availability of cheap and low-quality products
imported majorly from Bangladesh and China coupled with poor supply chain
& inventory management infrastructure further poses a threat to both
organized as well as unorganized market players, thereby impacting the
India furniture market.

Market Trends and Developments
Market Trends and Developments

Change in Consumer Preferences

The growing impact of western culture has changed consumer preferences. The demand for flexible and attractive
furniture is increasing in India's metropolitan areas. The fast rise of metro cities and the development of the housing
industry are transforming people's living standards and lifestyles. Furthermore, consumers are becoming more
1 conscious of sustainability and recycling, and they are making more educated decisions, preferring engineered wood
furniture/refurbished furniture over plastic furniture. Therefore, to meet growing consumer demand, furniture
manufacturers are continuously coming up with innovative and sustainable products. For instance, in 2020, Godrej
Interio launched Bobbin range of sofa and Gradiant sofa range, which are sustainable and comes at affordable prices.

Multiple Distribution Channels

The availability of engineered wood furniture through multiple distribution channels has made purchasing furniture
goods easier for customers. Additionally, with rising consumer aspirations and demand, the marketing and distribution
channels are also emerging across the country. Earlier, the majority of the sales took place through conventional
retail, and local suppliers. Today, rising disposable income is driving the purchase of furniture items online, which is
2 leading to a shift in favor of modern shopping, i.e., E-commerce, from traditional sales formats. These modern retail
outlets offer a wide range of products under one roof and also reduce the complexity associated with an extended
distribution network. Furthermore, manufacturers are rapidly expanding their businesses, fueling the demand for
organized shopping spaces. For instance, in 2020, IKEA adopted an omni-channel approach by integrating its brick-
and-mortar format stores with online stores.

Growing Inclination Towards Branded Products

With the growing millennial population and rising disposable income, consumer preference towards branded
products due to their durability, aesthetics, and quality is increasing. People prefer to consult interior designers and
3 have customized products that are in line with their lifestyle choices. Consumers are building brand loyalty as a
result of the excellent services offered by businesses. In the future, the market is likely to be driven by the
enhanced services provided by organized market players.

Market Trends and Developments

Rise in Tourism and Hospitality Industry

Any rise or fall in commercial and hospitality sectors impacts the growth of the furniture market. The rise in tourism is
creating a significant demand for hotel rooms which is further benefiting the furniture industry of India. The fortune of
the hospitality sector is related to the growth in the tourism sector. The travel and tourist industry has been a key
4
contributor to India's rising furniture demand over the years. According to the Ministry of Tourism of India, the
number of foreign tourists arrival in India was 10.93 million in 2019. This trend is projected to continue in the next
five years as well, due to increase in number of both local and international tourists.

Government Initiatives
The government of India has always promoted self-manufacturing since it generates more income, creates more jobs,
and allows India to export more goods throughout the world. In order to encourage companies to manufacture in
India the government has taken certain initiatives such as Make in India, which supports craftsmen and promotes the
production of handicrafts in the country. The scheme aims to boost the manufacturing share in country’s GDP to 20%
by 2025. Moreover, in 2020, the prime minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi, launched ‘Vocal for Local’ campaign, in
order to encourage people to purchase Made in India products and companies to manufacture competitive products
5
on global level. The goal of this program is to support all local manufacturers and producers around the country,
which will help the furniture sector flourish. Furthermore, increasing government support such as distribution of
improved tools to the artisans of pottery/terracotta and wooden craft, empanelment of artisans/SHGs/clusters for
procurement of handicraft & handloom products by HHEC/CCIC, etc., is expected to aid India furniture market during
the forecast period.

Market Trends and Developments

Growing Trend of Do-it-Yourself (DIY)

The latest trend in global as well as Indian furniture market is “DIY”. The concept was introduced by IKEA, wherein
the merchandize is assembled by the customer himself/herself at his/her house. This has now become a way for
furniture producers to decrease their transportation logistics costs, merchandize storage and persistent problem of
physical damages occurring during transit.
6
New research & development activities are resulting in such innovations that are increasing the revenue share of
organized sector and making India furniture market much more organized. This change is partly attributed to high
financial backing of organized retail furniture players as compared to unorganized furniture producers.
Online channel retailers have been able to decrease their overall overheads by approximately 20% for the
merchandize like wall shelves and wall units by offering these in DIY format.

Growing Usage of Medium Density Fiber (MDF) Board

Usage of MDF board in household and commercial office units in India is increasing at a robust pace, owing to its low
cost compared to natural teak wood. MDF board perfectly matches the price budget of the Indian middle class
population. Additionally, the MDF board is superior to the regular plywood in strength, and it is very easy to paint,
7 drill, and screw during installation. The production of MDF boards is cost-effective, as they can be recycled. This
product is in huge demand among real estate developers and construction companies, mainly for in-built furniture
like decorative moldings, shelving, and doors involved while constructing new houses.

Strategic Recommendations
Focus on Large Untapped Rural Market

• The majority share of the furniture market of India is held by the

unorganized players. The organized players in the India furniture
market particularly cater to the urban areas, as consumers living
in Tier I & II cities usually generate huge demand for them.
However, the huge untapped potential for the players in India
furniture market lies in rural areas, as around 65% of the
country's population lives in rural areas and rural household

1 incomes have been increasing rapidly during the historic period.

• Indian government has been launching various housing projects

in rural areas, which is expected to positively influence the
furniture market in these areas. Moreover, government
initiatives such as Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, which aims at
providing affordable housing to poor with a target of building 20
million affordable houses by 2022, will further influence the
growth of the furniture market in India. Furthermore, the
purchasing power of consumers residing in rural areas is on a
steady rise.

• Hence, companies should focus on expanding their businesses in

the Tier III towns and rural areas of the country in order to tap
growth opportunities emanating from the rural segment.

Focus on Office Furniture

• The office furniture segment of the furniture market of India is

anticipated to grow at the highest pace during the forecast period,
owing to factors such as rising economic growth, higher demand
for office spaces post easing of lockdown restrictions, growing
acceptance of work from home culture and so on.

• The focus on real estate and office development is anticipated to

continue in the foreseeable future, indicating that the office
furniture sector will continue to grow. Furthermore, the Indian
2 corporate sector is growing as a result of the government's efforts
to make it easier to conduct business. The need for office furniture
is driven by the remodelling of existing workplaces, in addition to
the construction of new office space. Moreover, the COVID-19
pandemic sparked new market trends and aided manufacturers in
pursuing new business opportunities. The demand for home-office
furniture such as study tables, office chairs, laptop tables, and
other items increased, owing to a high percentage of India's
corporate workers working remotely and practically all students
continuing their education online. Companies are continuously
coming up with new and innovative products in order to meet
increasing customer demands. For instance, in 2020, Durian
Industries launched new products under its ergonomic office chairs
range.

• Thus, it is recommended that companies should focus on widening

their office furniture product range to gain competitive edge in the
India furniture market.

Focus on Online Sales

• Online sales channel is the fastest-growing distribution channel in

the furniture market of India. The rapid growth of online retail
especially in 2020 due to COVID-19 has made companies rethink
their furniture distribution channel strategy. Companies that earlier
were following the direct selling model have shifted their focus to
online retail as it is cost-effective too. For instance, in 2020, Godrej
Interio launched an e-commerce platform to expand its reach in the
furniture market of India.

3
• On account of increasing entry of e-tailers in India furniture business
coupled with improving logistics services, the online availability of
wide range of furniture in the country has increased over the years.
The online furniture market is growing at a robust pace in the
country, owing to the easy availability of a wide variety of choices,
offers and discounts, in addition to the time-saving, affordable
options. Moreover, growing internet penetration is further aiding the
country’s online furniture retail market. Online sales platform
enhances product visibility and enables better price comparison,
thereby helping buyers make quick purchase decisions.

• With the growing penetration of online retail in India, furniture retail

companies such as Nilkamal and Durian are also offering their
products via captive portals. Thus, it is advised that the furniture
companies should focus on online sales in order to capture more
customers and remain competitive in the market.
