ENGL 1301 Visual Analysis Outline Assignment

Instructions: Following the example of Dr. Nelson in the Visual Analysis Outline Demo video, organize your
analysis of the visual components and rhetorical situation of your visual text. Complete each chart with
information from your visual analysis notes worksheet in order to plot what you need to discuss in each section
of your essay.

Section 1: Introduction

a. Identify the visual text, its genre, and relevant facts about the context of its production:

Description There are candy Jars all over, it looks like a wall made up of candy jars. All candy jars
provide different types of candies inside. Man in the trenchcoat is carrying a traveling
briefcase who seems to be on a journey with something to do with candy. There is a light
that appears to look like a portable. This light might indicate that the candy is special in a
type of way or maybe even magical.

c. Identify (1) what message the visual text seeks to convey and (2) how the visual text’s design components
help it convey this message (this will be your controlling idea):
Controlling What: The authors of this poster add what this movie will be about so the audience can have
Idea a good knowledge of what this movie will be about.
How: By including the main points of the movie for example candy.

Explanation 1 Most of this poster, like 75% is made up of candy jars indicating that candy jars plays a big
factor in this movie.

Point 2 Man in the trenchcoat is responsible for making this candy or he has something to do with
the candy.

Described Man in a trenchcoat is facing the candy holding a briefcase.

Explanation 2 I can infer that this movie may be talking about his personal achievement or his journey
with making candy because a briefcase usually is used when traveling and having a journey.
The briefcase can indicate the achievements accomplished on his journey by the man.

Point 3 The light might mean that the man makes maybe magical candy or unique candy.

Described The light provided to look like a portable makes the image look magical.

Explanation 3 The light provided is illuminated towards the bottom of the candy jars in the middle and it
looks like the man is walking towards it making the image look magical.

help it convey this message:
Controlling What: A movie poster including visual images that play apart in the movie. We can indicate
Idea candy will play a main part in this film since their is candy all over the place.
How:The author gets his point across by adding a small visual summary of what this movie
will be about.

b. Describe why your insight about how the author uses visual components to convey the message is important
/ significant:
Importance It is important that I thoroughly understand how the author uses these visual components to
be able to identify what this movie poster will be about.

c. Describe what readers should do with this knowledge:


Implications Use it to further understand why visual analysis is important and maybe understand the
genre of the poster.
