TOPIC : LIVE MIGRATION OF VM

LIVE MIGRATION OF VM

Live migration of VMs is a key technology for modern data center management. It allows
running VMs to be moved from one physical host to another without downtime, providing a
number of benefits, including:

 Improved resource utilization: Live migration can be used to consolidate VMs onto fewer
physical hosts, or to move VMs to hosts with more resources when needed. This can
improve overall resource utilization and reduce costs.
 Increased availability: Live migration can be used to move VMs away from failing or
overloaded hosts, or to perform maintenance on hosts without disrupting users. This can
improve overall availability of applications and services.
 Enhanced disaster recovery: Live migration can be used to move VMs to a different data
center in the event of a disaster. This can help to ensure that applications and services
remain available even if one data center is unavailable.

One example of a case study on live migration of VMs is that of a large e-commerce company.
The company uses live migration to balance the load on its web servers during peak traffic
periods. This helps to ensure that all of its customers have a good experience, even when the
site is very busy.

Another example is that of a financial services company. The company uses live migration to
move VMs to different data centers for disaster recovery purposes. This ensures that its critical
applications and services will remain available even if one data center is unavailable due to a
disaster.

Overall, live migration is a powerful technology that can be used to improve resource
utilization, increase availability, and enhance disaster recovery.

Here is a specific example of how live migration can be used to improve resource utilization:

A company has a cluster of 10 physical servers, each running 5 VMs. The VMs are a mix of
different types, including web servers, database servers, and application servers. The
company notices that some of the servers are overloaded, while others are underutilized.
The company decides to use live migration to consolidate the VMs onto fewer servers. They
start by migrating the VMs from the overloaded servers to the underutilized servers. Once the
VMs have been migrated, the company can shut down the overloaded servers.

As a result, the company is now able to run all of its VMs on 7 physical servers instead of 10.
This has improved resource utilization by 30%.

Here is a specific example of how live migration can be used to increase availability:

A company has a web server that is critical to its business. The web server is running on a
physical host that is starting to fail.

The company decides to use live migration to move the web server to another physical host.
The live migration process is successful, and the web server continues to operate without any
downtime.

As a result, the company has avoided a service disruption that could have cost them millions of
dollars.

Overall, live migration is a powerful tool that can be used to improve data center management
in a number of ways.

Case Study: Live Migration of a Critical Production VM

Company: Acme Corporation Industry: Financial Services Challenge: Acme Corporation
needed to upgrade the hardware of its critical production VM, but it could not afford any
downtime.
Solution: Acme Corporation used live migration to move the VM to a new host with the new
hardware.
Process:
1. Acme Corporation installed the live migration agent on the source and destination hosts.

2. Acme Corporation verified that the VM met all of the requirements for live migration.

3. Acme Corporation initiated the live migration process.

4. The live migration agent on the source host began copying the VM's memory and state to the
destination host.

5. Once the copy was complete, the live migration agent on the destination host started the VM.

6. The live migration agent on the source host shut down the VM.

7. The VM was now running on the destination host with the new hardware.

Benefits:
 Acme Corporation was able to upgrade the hardware of its critical production VM without any
downtime.

 Acme Corporation was able to improve the performance and reliability of its critical production
VM.

 Acme Corporation was able to reduce the risk of data loss and corruption.

Results:

The live migration of the critical production VM was successful. The VM was moved to the new
host with the new hardware without any downtime. The VM's performance and reliability
improved. The risk of data loss and corruption was reduced.
