Solar System Formation Worksheet

The solar system formed from a large cloud of gas and dust called a molecular cloud. As the cloud collapsed due to its own gravity, it flattened into a rotating disk and the material in the center became extremely dense and hot, forming our Sun. Small solid particles in the disk collided and stuck together, growing into planets. The inner, rocky planets like Earth formed close to the Sun while the outer gas giants like Jupiter formed in the cooler outer regions of the disk. Our solar system is located in one of the spiral arms of the Milky Way galaxy.

How the Planets in the Solar System were formed?

A. The paragraph below describes the formation of the Solar System. Fill in the blanks.

Star and Solar system formation begins when a large, cold, slowly rotating cloud made
mostly of hydrogen and helium, known as a __________________, it is resulted with uneven
distribution of gasses throughout the universe begins to collapse due to the force of its own
_____________. As the cloud collapses, the speed of the _______________ increase and
begins to flatten into an _____________________disk. Small grains of solid material within this
disk collide with each other and “stick” together via electrostatic forces. As the _________
further increase, the gravity also ______________ creating a larger body known as
___________________also known as the ____________. If this body becomes massive enough,
it can begin to attract additional material via the force of _____________ creating a
protoplanet. They all form from the same cloud of gasses so they travel in the same direction
and ___________. The rocky or ________________ planet are closer to the sun and the gas
giant _______________, _______________, ___________________, __________________ are
formed in the cooler outer region of the Solar System.
