The history of The Stone Age

Advanced Level
Have you ever heard about the stone
age? The stone age is a very ancient period of
human history when people used weapons and
tools made of stone. Lasting about two and a
half million years, the stone age ended
approximately five thousand years ago.
The stone age is the first period of
human history, so people from this era were
also the first to create clothing. People wore
clothes made of animal skins during the
winter months and clothes built from grass
and bark of trees during the summers.
Scientists have divided the stone age into
two major periods which are the Palaeolithic
period and the Neolithic period.
At the beginning of the Palaeolithic period, early humans made chopping
tools out of stones. Then, humans made better tools like chisels and scrapers.
Language was the most important innovation of the Palaeolithic era. Some
Palaeolithic’s people lived in caves while others lived under rock or out in the
open.
They used to gather wild plants and
fruits to eat. Their tools helped them to hunt
animals for food. In the later Palaeolithic
period, humans made small sculptures out of
clays, bones or stones. They also painted
designs on rocks and cave walls.
The Neolithic period means new stone
age which began approximately ten thousand
years ago. During this period, people polished
stones to make more complex and useful tools
like polished cells and gouges. They also
learned to grow crops for food and to tame
animals.
Groups of people began to settle in
villages. They learned to make pottery, weave clothes and make baskets. The
Neolithic way of life first appeared in the South Western Asia over several
thousand years.
It circulated Northward to Europe and Eastward to India and Eastern
Asia by about five thousand years ago. People in China and Greece started
