1.a) A Carnot refrigerator operates between the temperatures of –500C and 500C.
Determine COP of the refrigerator. If the COP is to be made 4 by changing the
pe
temperatures such that increase or decrease in upper temperature is equal to decrease or
increase in lower temperature, determine the new temperatures.
b) Briefly explain the working of two stage compression with water intercooler and liquid
rf
sub-cooler employed for vapour compression system. [7+8]

2.a) Explain losses in VCR system and discuss their effects.

b) A refrigeration system operates with R12 refrigerant. The evaporator and condenser
temperature are at -50C and -350C, respectively. The actual suction to the compressor is
at 150C. If superheating of refrigerant vapour from -100C to 200C does not add any
/m
refrigerating effect,
i) Determine the percentage increase in volume flow rate per ton of refrigeration
compared with the saturation cycle;
ii) Compare the COP for saturated and superheated cycles; and
ar
iii) Determine the power required per TR. [7+8]

3. A R-12 refrigerating machine works on vapor compression cycle. The temperature of
refrigerant in the evaporator is -200C. The vapor is dry saturated when it enters the
compressor and leaves it in a superheated condition. The condenser temperature is
0
300C. Assuming specific heat at constant pressure for R-12 in the superheated condition
as 1.884 kJ/kg K, determine:
22
a) Condition of vapor at the entrance to the condenser
b) Condition of vapor at the entrance to the evaporator and
c) Theoretical COP of the machine. [15]

4.a) Explain the desirable characteristics of a good refrigerant.
b) Draw the vapour compression refrigeration cycle on T-s diagram when the refrigerant
tu
is super-heated at the end of compression and find an expression for the C.O.P. [7+8]

5.a) Explain working principle and components of thermo electric refrigerating system.
h
b) Explain the working of following types of evaporators with neat sketches:
(i) Flooded evaporator, (ii) Natural convection evaporator. [7+8]

6.a) Draw the line diagram and explain the working of practical vapour absorption system.
b) In an absorption type refrigerator, the heat is supplied to NH3 generator by condensing
steam at 1.6 bar and 80% dry. The temperature in the refrigerator is to be maintained at
ed
-50C. Find the maximum COP possible. If the refrigeration load is 150 TR and the
actual COP is 80% of the maximum COP, find the mass of the steam required per hour.
Take the temperature of the atmosphere to be 300C. [8+7]

the function of each component; compare the system with vapor compression
refrigeration system.
b) A refrigerating system working on Bell-Coleman cycle receives air from cold chamber
pe
at -40C and compresses it from 1 bar to 5 bar. The compressed air is then cooled to a
temperature of 470C before it is expanded in the expander. Calculate the COP of the
system when compression and expansion are i) isentropic and ii) follow the law
rf
pv1.25=constant. [7+8]

8.a) Explain in detail about heat pump circuits along with suitable line diagram.
eb
b) Air at 300C DBT and 60% RH is passed through a cooling coil at the rate of
250 m3/ min. The air leaves the cooling coil at 140C DBT. If the by-pass factor of the
cooling coil is 0.1. Find
