All the equations that we have solved have had the
variable as a base; all exponents have been constants. An
𝑒𝑥𝑝𝑜𝑛𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑎𝑙 𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 is an equation that has a variable in an
exponent, such as
9 𝑥 = 27
We use the following property to solve many exponential
equations.
This property will not necessarily be true if 𝒂 = 𝟏
To solve an exponential equation using this property, go
through the following steps:

The laws of the

every month. If there are now 250 insects, about
how long will it take for the colony to grow to
8000.
