Discussion 2: Differentiating Algebraic Expressions, Equations and Inequalities
Mathematics is the language of science. Generally, theories are easily accepted when
expressed in formulas. Formulas can be describe what is in the past and make predictions about
what might occur in the future.
Differentiating algebraic expressions, equation and inequalities gives an integral part in our
life. It makes our life orderly and prevent chaos. Certain qualities are nurtured by a power of
reasoning, creativity, abstract, spatial thinking, critical thinking and problem solving skills.
MATHEMATICAL TERMS:
Algebraic expression - is an expression built up from integer constants, variables, and the
algebraic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and exponentiation by an
exponent that is a rational number).
Equation - is a mathematical representation of two things which are equal, one on each side of an
‘=’ sign. Example:
❖ 3x - 2 = 5 ❖ x + 9 = 2x + 5 ❖ x /3 = 15 ❖ x² + 1 = 10
In each of the examples above, the equations represents equals “=” sign. (See encircled symbol).

• The answer of an algebraic expression is either • The answer in an equation could be

The explanation above clearly shows the big difference between these two mathematical concepts.
An algebraic expression does not reveal any relationship while an equation does. In the case of an
algebraic expression there is no equal sign. So there is no definite solution and cannot end up
displaying the value of a variable involved. While an equation contains an equal sign; therefore, it
shows a solution and end up representing the value of the variable.
Inequality – an expression which is either larger or smaller than another expression. It is not
necessarily equal which is shown by the symbols: >, <, ≤, ≥, or ≠.
A. Equation Checking
1. 3x = 12 1. 3x = 12 Given
3𝑥
3 3(4) = 12 Substitution
x=4 12 = 12
In getting the value of 3x = 12 it As you can see the two mathematical
has only one solution which is x = expressions are equal that is why it is called

2. 5x + 3 = 13 2. 5x + 3 = 13 Given
5x + 3 – 3 = 13– 3 5(2) + 3 = 13 Substitution
5x = 10
5𝑥
= 10 10 + 3 = 13 Simplifying
5 5
13 = 13
x=2 When x = 2 the equation
In getting the value of 5x + 3 = 5x + 3 = 13 becomes equal.
13 it has only one solution
which is x = 2.
A. Inequality Checking
1. y < 4 1. y < 4
Possible Answers: ...,-1, 0, 1, 2, 3
when y = 3 3 < 4 (True)
(3) < 4 Substitution
when y = 2 2 < 4 (True)
(2) < 4 Substitution
when y = 1 1 < 4 (True)
(1) < 4 Substitution When we substitute number 3, 2 and 1 to
the inequality y< 4 there are many possible
answers to make Mathematical sentence true.

Self-Check:
With the help of your parents/guardians/learning facilitators at home, you may now go back
to your activities and check it by referring to the Answers Key attached. The learning facilitators
will be the one to check the answers that can be found in the Answer Key, except for the
Performance Task. If mistakes were committed, you can ask your parents/guardians/learning
facilitators at home for further explanation or you can directly contact your subject teachers for
more clarifications and queries.
Post-test should be answered but there are no answer keys to measure how you learn
the content and concept of the lesson.
