PRIME FACTORS AND LARGE NUMBERS SOLUTIONS

There are many trees you may have drawn. From your tree you should have found the following prime
factors for each number.

440 1050 1260

440 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 5 × 11 1050 = 2 × 3 × 5 × 5 × 7 1260 = 2 × 2 × 3 × 3 × 5 × 7

Use the prime factors from the trees to answer these questions. You will need a calculator to help with
your answers.

1 Matching the prime factors: 2 Using the common factors:

1050 = 2 × 3 × 52 × 7 1050 = 2 × 3 × 52 × 7

440 = 23 × 5 × 11 440 = 23 × 5 × 11

LCM = 23 × 3 × 52 × 7 × 11 HCF = 2 × 5
= 46 200 = 10

3 Matching the prime factors: 4 Using the common factors:

1260 = 22 × 32 × 5 × 7 1260 = 22 × 32 × 5 × 7

1050 = 2 × 3 × 52 × 7 1050 = 2 × 3 × 52 × 7

The smallest number that both numbers will The largest number that will divide exactly
divide into is the LCM: into both is the HCF:
22 × 32 × 52 = 6300 2 × 3 × 5 × 7 = 210

5 Matching the prime factors: 6 Using the common factors:

1260 = 22 × 32 × 5 × 7 1260 = 22 × 32 × 5 × 7

440 = 23 × 5 × 11 440 = 23 × 5 × 11

LCM = 23 × 32 × 5 × 7 × 11 HCF = 22 × 5
= 27 720 = 20
