1. GENERAL

1.1 SCOPE
This Functional Specification defines the procedures, the requirements, and the eventually required
design, for the execution of large and small demolition works.
This document applies to demolition, above and under ground, for any elevation and/or depth, of
works made in concrete (whether reinforced or not), in masonry and in steel; of road foundations and
pavements, of buildings, and to the cut-off of the heads of the foundation piles, etc.

1.2.2 Normative references of other organizations

In the country other than Italy, in addition to the local rules, also the latest edition of applicable codes
issued by the following Standardization Bodies can be used as reference:
• ACI “American Concrete Institute”
• AISC “American Institute of Steel Construction”
• IBC “International Building Code”
• ASTM “American Society for Testing and Materials”
• BSI “British Standards Institution”

1.2.3 Legislation
The execution of demolition works shall comply with the regulations in force in the country where the
works are carried out and such regulations shall prevail over the specifications of this present
document.
In particular, for works performed in Italy, reference shall be made to the prescriptions contained in the
Decree of the President of Republic No. 164 dated January 7th, 1956 entitled "Norme per la
prevenzione degli infortuni sul lavoro nelle costruzioni" (Rules for the prevention of the labour
accidents in constructions).

2. FUNCTIONAL NORMATIVE REQUIREMENTS

2.1 DEFINITIONS

2.1.1 Total Demolition

Total demolition is that carried out, with any kind of suitable equipment, for totally demolishing
structures of any type, both above ground and underground.

2.1.2 Partial Demolition of Limited Section

Partial demolition of limited section is that carried out, with any kind of suitable equipment, for
demolishing only a definite part (more or less extended) of a structure of any type.

2.1.3 Demolition of Pile Heads (Cut-off)

Pile cut-off is that demolition, carried out with any kind of suitable equipment, for removing the
concrete of the pile heads and exposing the steel reinforcement.

2.2 OPERATING ENVIRONMENT

The demolition works subject to this specification are those to be executed in refineries and industrial
plants, camps, residential complexes, offices and other typical works of an oil company.

2.3 FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS

2.3.1 General
The legislative regulations of the country in which the works are performed shall be complied with.
Works in Italy shall be executed in compliance with the requirements of the D.P.R. N° 164 dated
January 7 th, 1956.
No damages to adjacent structures (or to parts to be saved) shall be caused during the demolition
works.
If the structure to be demolished is buried, excavations can be carried out outside the structure
perimeter only after having verified that no damages can be caused to adjacent structures, and/or
excavations shall not hinder the activities to be carried out in the surrounding.
Excavations, site clearing and fills, if any, necessary for the execution of demoliton works shall comply
with the functional specifications 27550.VAR.CIV.FUN "Site clearing and excavation" and
27551.VAR.CIV.FUN "Fill".

2.3.2 Demolition Works of Large Extension

Before beginning the demolition works a detailed plan shall be prepared to established the procedures
for performing the works. In particular it shall be pointed out: the order of executing works, the
technique and the equipment to be used, the safety criteria to be observed, the method of transporting
materials to the ground level and, in case of partial demolition, the check calculation of the structures
to be saved and of the prop works to be executed in advance.
Should the demolition be performed by means of blasting charges, it must be also indicated the type of
charge, the power and the relevant calculations, the method and the work sequences.
The demolition plan shall comply with the requirements of the legislation in force in the country where
the works are performed.

2.3.3 Demolition Works of Small Extent

Demolition works of small extent, i.e. demolition which does not involve complex structures or which
do not require a detailed plan, check calculation or when dangerous methodologies are not used (e.g.
dynamite, explosive, etc.), can be carried out after having established the equipment, the work
procedures and the necessary safety measures to be adopted.

2.3.4 Cut-off of Pile Heads

The cut-off of the foundation pile head, i.e. the partial demolition of the top of pile (whether precast or
cast-in-situ), shall be carried out in order to remove the concrete of the pile section from the level
Eni S.p.A. 27549.VAR.CIV.FUN
Rev. 1 October 2009
Exploration & Production Division
pg. 6 of 7

where the concrete placement or the pile driving are normally interrupted, up to resting level of the
foundation bottom plus 50-100 mm.
The cut-off can be performed by hand or with suitable mechanical equipment which does not damage
the pile reinforcement.
The cut-off operation may be performed inside an excavation whose sizes and depth depend on the
sizes of the foundation to be constructed on the piles.
The exposed part of the reinforcement must be perfectly clean and sound. The exceeding part of the
reinforcement shall be cut and removed.
The remaining part of the pile shall be sound, without cracks or breaks.

2.3.5 Demolition of Roads

The work procedure for the limited section demolition of a road, after its construction, which will be
necessary for crossing of piping, electrical and instrument cables, sewers, etc., shall be as follows:
- setting out of the excavation
- cut of paving and roadbed so that the surrounding road layers maintain the original
stability
- removal and disposal of materials.
All the necessary provisional works and visual signalling during the day and the night shall be carried
out for the prevention of accidents.
Road demolition works shall be scheduled taking into account the hindrance that can be caused to the
traffic; for this purpose the works may be performed on a lane and alternatively on the other, so as not
to interrupt completely the traffic.
The subsequent restorations of road foundations and pavements, are covered by the Functional
Specification 27557.ROD.CIV.FUN "Road works - Materials and construction".

2.4 BOUNDARIES, LIMITS AND EXCLUSIONS

Boundaries, limits and exclusions shall be defined and checked from time to time, taking into account
the location where the works are to be performed.
Furthermore, the following prescriptions are established.
The materials resulting from any kind of demolition shall be the Company's property.
The demolished materials, which are suitable for their re-use and are to be used later on, shall be
temporary stockpiled in a place, inside the work site, indicated by the Company, acting on proposal put
forward by the Contractor.
The demolished materials which can not be used any more shall be dumped up to disposal areas,
outside the work site, indicated by the Company, acting on proposal put forward by the Contractor,
and indications must be given on the distance of such areas from work site.
Setting out of the works shall start from benchmarks established jointly by the Company and
Contractor.

2.5 SAFETY
As regards safety, demolition works shall be carried out in accordance with the legislation of the
country where the works are performed.
Furthermore, the regulations, as defined in the contractual documents, for safe working conditions in
the presence of works and/or plants already built, shall be complied with.

2.6 ONE-OFF FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS

2.6.1 Damages caused by the works of demolition

Damaged works, if any, must be restored to their full functionality.
The pile damaged during the head cut-off must be repaired. The damaged parts of pile shall be
removed, up to the sound part is reached, obtaining a perfectly clean and rough surface; then the
damaged part of the pile shall be exactly reconstructed using mortar and/or concrete (also using
admixtures), ensuring that the adhesion between the two layers and the original resistance
characteristics have been achieved.
